Most scene bands do stare at the ground. It's not a perfect criterion, but it's better than any you've thrown out.

It means the really conformist kids like a band. Basically one of the conformist leaders likes a band, and all the minions follow and make crap bands gain tons of popularity, in most cases. Sometimes good bands actually get recognition too though.
