I'm bad at criticizing because I usually put my personal tastes over objective reviewing.
|
Hey guys, just dropping in to see how goes it? I'm finished with school so you should expect to see me around more often, giving winded reviews noone will read :p.
Is this place still like the bottom of a truck-stop toilet? I figure I might as well start off by sharing one thing I learned this year that has greatly impacted my writing- reading short stories is an amazing way to better yourself as a writer of lyrical works. I personally suggest you look at The Love Song of J. Alfred Pufrock by T.S. Eliot. That is a great example of a poetic story. If you're looking for some influence then there is no better then my personal favorite author- Franz Kafka. Some more modern inspiration could come from John Updike and John McPhee. |
It comes and goes, man. There are the obviously great pieces and the severely retarded pieces. But it's all part of the equilibrium, I think.
|
I wrote a paper on "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" and his futility in lack of action as per Chaos Theory in my freshman year of college. The professor gave me a C-.
|
Short stories are great. "The Killers" by Hemmingway is one of my favourites.
|
i've read a lot of volumes of The Year's Best Science Fiction. some really nice short stories there.
|
I read a short story once... it was a russian short story, from the realism period about a lottery tickety. I remember it being really good.
|
i bet there's a one in two million three hundred thirty five chance of that story being good
|
The course it takes is really good. The description is rich.

two hours of sleep and summer school in an hour
something tells me that i'll be falling asleep to circle takes the square today |
I can't stand Hemingway, personally. If you're looking for a good read, The Night In Question by Tobias Wolff has some excellent stories in it.
|
Hemingway was a classic meathead. His stuff's not atrocious, though. At least it's not as dry as Melville's.
|
He was a macho, emotionaless drunk.
|
It's a beautiful day, go out and exercise.
|
It's a rainy day here. I got 2 hours of sleep, went out, worked for 8 hours, and made $103 in tips. Stupid breakfast/lunch shift.
|
it's nice here i believe.
i may go to a band practice today. have yet to take a shower... |
Someone crit my piece's second draft...please.

Hello all
I have to say that i'm really impressed by the "improve your writing" guide. It's well written, very helpful and extremely overdue. So well done subtle and atc for that. On the topic of short stories (or possibly slightly off the topic), "The Picture Of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde, although not exactly classically short is a beautifully written short novel. Almost every line reads like poetry without being written in any type of form or meter. The prologue by wilde alone is one of the thought provoking things i've ever read. I'd recommend it to anyone intrested in reading to improve their writing. |
The real problem with the writing in this forum, mostly with the better writers, is that no one wants to look outside their idolatries and lyrical/poetic tastes. Too many people gather far too much of what they write from their associated peers, and that isn't constructive.

I agree with that. IMO it's the same problem with musicians. Diversity of listening/reading is very important in order to create original/interesting work. |
OMG! What's up man.
Hadn't seen you around in a while. How's stuff. |

So just so you all know, I'm going to England/France for two weeks. I'll be back in...two weeks.
|
Where abouts in England you heading to DR?
I haven't been around much in the last week or so, I've had a sudden loss of inspiration. Though it's beginning to come back, should get some crits in later this evening :) Timmy |
Don't go to England, you'll lose all your ability to write about bad government because ours is so damn perfect. ............. k
|
Haha!!
Tell me some more jokes like that and I'll fall out of my chair! (I live in England too :p) Timmy |

(I live in England too :p) Timmy
Gotta love those piss poor world powers...:p Subtle: I was looking through your profile when i spotted that you like wolf eyes. You're the only other person that i've had contact with who actually likes them/him other than me. One of my friends actually nearly vomits at the sound of "stabbed in the face" :). |
Flow is such a dumb word.

Hey S&L forum!
I need a reason for my taste in music?....its like saying.."oh you dont like esparrigus, elvaluate it and make a good reason"......the only answer i would have is "it tastes bad"////
bright eyes is like esparagus....best when burned to a crisp or in the garbage disposal
I agree in large quantities, people could at least stop with the whole slating people for taste in music thing cos otyherwise this whole thread should probs just be chucked in the pit section instead |
Haha, I generally keep quiet about my music tastes. People always ask me 'Why do you like them? They're crap!'. Unfortunately they don't understand different tastes and personal differences.
The 'indie' bands just appeal to me, along with the 60's Pop, it's just something I like. No-one will stop me liking them so there's no point arguing about it really. If only other people realised that!! And when I tell people I like classical, well, I may as well be a Jew in 1940s Germany. On that subject, we had a load of R.E lessons on the Holocaust the past few weeks. Kind of depressing but eye opening. Really changed my thoughts and ideals on a lot of things. And all we can do is remember them. Actually gave me some inspiration, why is it that sad things inspire me?!?!?! Timmy |
On the subject of musical taste, can anyone recommend me some bands/songwriters who you think write great lyrics? I'm suffering from a shortage of new things right now.
|
Well, I've been listening to Elliott Smith a lot lately. I think he's a great lyricist.

i'll look into it, thanks. Any other suggestions? |

Nice. |
Cradle of Filth's lyrics.
<_< >_> |
Elliott Smith works well. If you want to be a little snobby with your vocabulary, try The Decemberists.
|
Decemberists ftw...
good music itt |
Neutral Milk Hotel, too. I don't think the music's all that great, but the lyrics are.
