its only cuz the rest of the band didnt want free-prose lyrics, they wanted the music shaped for the song

I am probably really late in this thread, but oh well
I am just now getting into Dream Theater, I heard a few of their songs online and couldn't get enough of the 2 that I kept hearing off of their newest album so I went and bought it. I really enjoy the entire album and I have been listening to it nonstop since I bought it..Since I still am not fully into this band I do have a question or two. Are all the vocals the same for each Dream Theater album? I really enjoy them on Octavarium? I am not sure at all, I remember downloaded thier cover on Metallica's Master of Puppets album a year ago or so and the vocals sound completely different than from what I remember, so I guess it's worth asking. |

I like his vocals best on Images & Words. on the first album, when dream and day unite, charly dominich (sp?) or soemthing like that does vocals, but I don't really like him too much |
I'm pretty sure the real reason he sang like that was because they were covering Metallica, not because of his injured vocal chords. They seem to be fine (though admittadly not his best ever) on the LSFNY and OIALT live albums.
123, if the lyrics are Myung's
Myung has written so few lyrics you can hardly say that you only enjoy the singing in songs he wrote. Although I agree his lyrics were usually great, especially Learning to Live. He stopped because during the SFAM sessions the band agreed they only wanted lyrics if they included melodies and everything that they would need for the song. When Myung did contribute lyrics JP, MP and KM had to work them into the song. |
blasphemy
i remember reading somewhere (cant remember where): Dream Theater, great band, but who cut that singers balls off.
I actually like LaBrie's voice, a lot. Particularly when he sings high, on songs like Metropolis or Under A Glass Moon. I got Live Scenes From New York today, and so far its kickass. I'm listening to Jordan Rudess Keyboard Solo right now, and man he's really a virtuoso. |
Does anyone care to tell me the phaser pedal Petrucci uses on Home?

Not really. |
Not really.
OK. Does anyone know the phaser pedal he uses? |
Nope.

He uses Boss.. I know that much |
He uses Boss.. I know that much
Yeah, I saw the advert in TG. I'm not sure he uses it live though. Possibly some sort of rank mounted fx unit. |

I didn't like Dream Theater until my friend made me listen to 'Train Of Thought'. Then I started liking it. Until he made me listen to that I thought Dream Theater didn't have a singer. |

Its a good cd, but not as good as some of their other albums. Train of thought was the first Dream Theater album I heard also. You may like Awake and 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence as well. |
What kind of metal is DT considered? I love them and i was jstu wondering what their catagory would be so i could find some similar bands.
|

|

If you want similar bands, go for Symphony X for sure, they are amazing |
Symphony X are more power metal-ish than progressive, but wa very good band indeed.
try some Racer X if you want a more DT style prog metal. other bands you might enjoy that are prg metal: Pain of Salvation The Flower Kings OSI Therion |
also Spock's Beard
and of course Liquid Tension Experiment |
Not to mention Planet X as well, prog-metal instrumental side project.
Pain of Salvation, by the way, is incredibly awesome. |

Dream Theater rocks I wished they were on the tour when megadeth came here but anthax was sweet to.

No you don't, Anthrax > DT
|
No you don't, Anthrax > DT
Erm, no. As good as Anthrax are live theres no way I'd buy tickets to see them 2 consecutive nights playing 3 hour sets. |

theres no way im wasting my money on any band to see them 2 consecutive nights playing 3 hour sets. besides, at least 1 hour of the 3 will be the band members (excluding Myung and Labrie) wanking away on their instruments. |

Theres not many bands that could keep me interested for that long in one gig. Also, they've got so much vary in their music so it's not 3 hours of the same style, Dream Theater cover so much ground. |

The songs are so intricate, you can listen to the same one noticing new things everytime. The fact that every song they have is well constructed isn't exactly a bad thing either. Truely an impressive band.

I'm definatly sure there won't be a support as it is an evening with, but at the wolverhamton show on 26th October it says on wolvescivic.co.uk it says Dream Theater + support. This is a mistake on their part isn't it? |

not sure, it says 'All shows will be "An Evening With Dream Theater" (no opening act and 2 sets with an intermission) unless noted otherwise' in their website. |
Hey, does anyone know where I can find a schedule for their North America tour in spring of '06? I tried on their website and couldn't find anything.

Hopefully these losers decide to come to Edmonton Alberta since they didn't with Gigantour...
