Which band was that Josh?

AA-12 12-09-2006 10:33 AM

Isole.

Iron Bars 12-09-2006 11:11 AM

I'm now listening to Ahab and it's pretty good, also tried Panteist this week and liked it.

What is the difference between Doom and Funeral Doom anyway? It sounds very the same (both being doom could probably do that).

Shattered_Future 12-09-2006 11:15 AM

I don't think Isole funeral doom at all. I think them as traditional, except they're what I like to call "new doom".

My Dying Bride and Swallow The Sun do it sometimes too...all 3 of the bands have moments where the tempo actually comes out of the ground, which I do like. It helps give the music new flair.

Funeral doom is pretty much doom on steroids. It's got all the elements of doom, except taken to the extreme: tempos are slowed to the point where they almost go backwards, and the vocals and lyrics are completely devoid of anything remotely happy.

I still can't get into FD that much. I think it drags on quite a bit...

ATM 12-09-2006 11:19 AM

I haven't tried any FD but I like traditional doom quite a bit. Cathedral and Saint Vitus ftw :-D

AlienEater 12-09-2006 11:25 AM

St Vitus are brilliant.

Txus 12-09-2006 11:46 AM

NP: BORN TOO LATE

/Continues playing bass.

Funeral Doom is a genre largely full of shit, with the exception of Skepticism - Stormcrowfleet.

What is the difference between doom and funeral doom?

Kage 12-09-2006 01:23 PM

Doom - repetitive and slow
Funeral doom - more repetitive and slower

Ah, I see. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Kage 12-09-2006 01:26 PM

You're quite welcome.

RetiredAt21 12-09-2006 01:32 PM

What are the best funeral doom bands that I should check out?

magicbus 12-09-2006 01:37 PM

I like Esoteric myself.

RetiredAt21 12-09-2006 01:41 PM
I like Esoteric myself.
Ok, thanks, I'll definitely check them out.

pate 12-09-2006 03:36 PM

Thergothon and Ahab got me into it.

Classic doom obviously stands out for the use of clean vocals, while FD has more connections with death metal. Mostly in vocal style.
Growled or whispergrowl like vocals, though there are enough bands that use clean vocals too.

Normal doom focuses more on the heavy, doomy, gloomy sound, wile FD is more about the dark, heavy, inpenetrable 'despair' sound; the I want to kill myself sound.
It's quite hard to explain..
Obviously, FD is way slower than classic.
Also FD more often uses synths and layers more.
Funeral Doom is a genre largely full of ****, with the exception of Skepticism - Stormcrowfleet.
If you'd be a bit more open minded you'd see it isn't mostly shit. There's a lot of good stuff. With a view like that you're missing out on a lot.

For people wanting recommendations:
Make sure you've heard something similair before, cause this isn't easy listening music.
You need to have some clue on what to expect before you can appreciate this.
So some classic doom might be a good starter before even going in to FD.

Anyway good Funeral doom recommendations:
Skepticism - Stormcrowfleet (Pioneers of FD, highly recommended, very relaxing at tme and not as suffocating as some other FD)
Ahab -The Call Of The Wrteched Sea. (Newcomers in the genre, made a great album about Moby Dick, very good, atmopsheric stuff)
Thergothon - Stream From The Heavens (Also pioneers in the genre, too bad they only made obne album before calling it quits.)
Shape Of Despair - Angels Of Distress (Finnish funeral doom with female vocals as well. Insane and mourning atmosphere, recommended for synth lovers.)
Comatose Vigil - Not A Gleam Of Hope (Sick Russian FD, lots of synths once again, very eery and sick atmosphere.)

I'm listening to Below the sun for the third or fourth time now. I love this song, the drums about 9 minutes in are briliant. Haven't gotten past Old thunder yet, I keep going back when I start listening again.

It reminds me more of Black Metal then Death Metal, atmospheric wise.

pate 12-10-2006 09:26 AM

I love everything doom.

Txus 12-10-2006 10:50 AM

I've been listening to a loooooot of Stoner Metal lately. High on Fire are so damn good.

pate 12-10-2006 10:59 AM

No. Really no.

What doom have you even heard that sounds anything like Shape of Despair or whatever Funeral Slow Death Metal with Goffik Keyboards you youngsters listen to these days? I'm sorry but once again, I fail to see any link between Trouble, Vitus, Pentagram etc and these bands.

Anyway been in bed with an evil virus for a couple of days. My pain was eased considerably by the following: Trouble "Live at Stockholm" DVD, Pentagram "Be Forewarned", Place of Skulls "The Black is Never Far", While Heaven Wept "Chapter 1", Dreaming "II".

Well not necessarily. You can be perfectly open-minded and just not happen to like funeral doom much.

Because doom is just an extremely lovable genre.

FINALLY!!! Someone who doesn't say they suck. High on Fire are great.

Orange Goblin, too.

In my context, something on steroids is something that's taken to the extreme. Which funeral doom is. It's got the elements of normal doom, but everything is taken to an extreme level.

south_guitar 12-11-2006 05:31 PM

This is currently my favorite style. I've been digging everything from Buried Inside, Cult of Luna, and Isis all the way to Acid King, Alabama Thunderpussy, and Earthride.

Like what? Slow doesn't equal doom! I've been listening to this stuff for a long time (strokes beard, lights pipe, puts comfy slippers on and settles down in favourite armchair) and I just don't hear any doom in Funeral Slow Death Metal.

Doom is about Sabbath basically. It needs that link to the masters. A purity of heritage and a love for SG guitars!

Go and listen to some Rising Dust.

I've always taken doom to be depressing and heavy. Which funeral doom does to quite the extent.
