What happened to James' voice? At first listen I never though much of his vocals on Awake, but I've been listenning to it quite a bit recently, his vocals are very good. (Better then any other album I think, although there are 2 I haven't heard).
Does anyone else feel this way? |

Does anyone else feel this way?
his vocals on Octavarium are brilliant, maybe because he doesnt do any 'WHOAAAAAAAA's in a really high pitch. he supposedly damaged his voice sometime, but it seemed to have brought the best of him :p |
yeah he damaged his vocal chords soon after awake if I remember correctly...
i found this file on ares...you might be able to find it on kazaa or such, its called octavarium, its not 8v...but this song...is just amazing...sounds like dream theater, complete 12 min instrumental. its not real drums though...and i know its not on any of DT's albums. could someone tell me who it is? or what song?
if someone wants, i can send it you.
I think it's by a band called Acid Rain. It is definitely a take on Stream Of Conciousness using the songwriting charts supplied by DT themselves for the Songwriting Contest before TOT came out. Compare the structures yourselves! |
so whats the real name of the song? and are the other instruments programmed like the drums? the song sounds so much like DT!
|
Octavarium is DTs newest album along with their 8th song on the album which lasts exactly 24 minutes. It has a slow, rather boring beginning, but once it gets going DT throws all they have into it. Octavarium, is as DT says themselves tuned down compared to TOT. Drumming is not as spectacular, but still amazing. The album is a lot more melodic than TOT, which is nice of course. I bought the CD with 2 friends and we listened to it on the way home in my friends dads car, with the base up. THe 1st song, THe root of all evil blew us away. THe build up is amazing, really gets the adranaline pumping. As far as my fave album i cant really say. TOT is absoluty amazing, great drumming, just fantastic stuff. 6DOIT is also amazing, more melodic than TOT. LaBries vocals are amazing in Misunderstood. the song 6DOIT itself shows a completely different side of DT. Change of Seasonswas my first DT CD i bought. The guitar build up is amazing, and is by far the best guitar build up DT has. Once those drums got going DT just grabbed hold of me. THeir cover of Deep Purple's Perfect Strangers is amazing, even though Portnoy does not follow Ian's drum beat, and sticks to a basic ac/dc beat. The guitar solo they added is one of my faves. I bought Images and Words last week and i love the drumming in the album, and its so beautifully melodic. Its just such a change from their new stuff. I never listened to one album over and over again of theirs, i keep switiching from one to another, even listening to all the DTs albums i have in one day. I have Portnoys Liquid Tensiondrumming DVD, which hugely motivates me to play more drums. DT is my joint fave band along with Iron Maiden, which im listening to right at this moment as i am typing. "The evil that men do lives on and on" ooooooooh ^^ DT are just amazing, and i feel sry for the people who are missing out on it
-- Havent done a spelling/grammer check on this thread. cant be arsed ^^ |

indeed, but I think he's gotten his range back, I think Octovarium is his best work since I&W |
Octavarium is the 1st time that LaBrie screams, which shows a whole new aspect of his vocal capabilities. He is amazing, but he does not have the power and stage energy of Bruce Dickinson, which is a shame. His voice is a lot softer than bruces, and he has a calming effect.

He screams??? How? Is Octavarium any good? |
Octavarium is definitely worth it. LaBrie screams in some parts of the songs, a sort of high pitched shriek. Quite cool, nothing you would expect from him, but thats what makes it all the better. Also John Myrung, the bassist, comes out more on this album than in others, with bass intros and solos and all that. :)

huzzah!
have just got my sweaty mitts on octavarium after 3 weeks waiting review later :) |

Is Octavarium any good?
If you are a pretty big DT fan, then you will like it. If you are a casual listener, probably not |
I dunno, I've been trying to convince some mate's how good DT is since I got Scenes a few years ago, they hadn't been convinced, until I played them Octavarium (Which I found weird, I definately didn't see it as their best). They don't really like DT as a whole, there are just a few songs on this album they enjoy.

I think its the opposite there. I'm a pretty big DT fan, and I don't like 8vm much... |
I kinda live 8v. I have on and off days, but it's still my least listened to DT album. On the other hand, songs such as 8V and Sacrificed Sons are mindblowing.

I guess its all opinion then... |

That's the same with the majority of my mates. They just get bored of the intrumental sections and go on about how the singer is annoying. Typical really. |
who's favorite song is the glass prisom
you should like listening to a 13 min long song. I love it though!! |

I find that scream stunning, amazing and just  LaBrie is so good on the entire album, but the title song is even more amazing. the way he screams sounds quite scary to me, I didn't exspect that he could be so furious |

Hello, I have recently ventured into the music of Dream Theater after hearing ''Pull me under''. I bought two CD's yesterday.
Scenes from a memory & Falling into infinity Are there any specific CD's people favour by the band? Also where would the two CD's I purchased rank? Top/middle/bottom?? Thanks in advance. |
Scenes from a memory is amazing and falling into infinity is quite good
train of thought, images and words, when dream and day unite are good to |
I saw another CD in store yesterday, it was a double disk, 100 waves of inner Turbulance or something, it was £15.99, sounds pretty cool.
|
Its 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence. Some great tracks, especially The Glass Prison.
|
Six Degrees of Inner turbulence is so awesome.
It's so well done, it has absolutely everything you would want from Dream Theater, well absolutely everything I want (Maybe could do with a few more heavy songs Awake style). I don't think there's one song on the album I don't love :thumb: |

The next album to get would definatly have to be Images and Words, unless you want something heavier, in which case try Train of Thought. 6DIOT is also a good buy if that's all you can get hold of. |

You may not like it at first, but once it clicks with you, you will love it. |

It's not terrible, just not as good as any of the others. |
Awake. I also really like Train of Thought and of course Images & Words. Don't care too much for Scenes from a Memory, though. Seems to drag on too long and get boring towards the middle.
