I think the bass playing in Morningrise is better than any other album... Advent's bass and guitars are twisted into a ball of stringy happiness. :)
If I remember reading correctly, Mikael was unhappy with the bass playing on that album. He said he wanted the bass to be more basic like it was on Orchid. |
I've gotten use to Orchid now and it's not that bad, and yes the guitar melodies are really a highlight with Opeth, even in the later albums too.

hey, an interesting tidbit...The band made 600 bucks TOTAL when Orchid and Morningrise came out...COMBINED! just thought you would like to know...seeing this year is the 10th anniversiary of Orchid's release.
Flynn was saying something like if you take out the vocals, you would say that Orchid and BWP were done by 2 different bands and I couldn't agree more. When you think about it, it makes sense. With BWP, they have a new rythum section and were MUCH MUCH more solid. Also, look at the ages when they did the album. Mike and Peter were 20 and 21 respectively and BWP came out 5 years later. Anyone knows that you go through a lot of changes in 5 years, ESPECIALLY as a musician. I think Orchid, for what it is, is an amazing album, but to me, BWP is by far (as of now) their apex, their masterpiece. I think Steven Wilson really helped bring out great things in Mike with musicianship AND song writing. I think they all really solidified as a band in the time from Orchid and BWP. Then again, I think its really unfair to compare the 2 albums because of the before mentioned reasons. They are clearly different bands. Another fact: Mike and Peter both dislike The Night and Silent Water due to the fact that Mike wrote it after his grandfather, who he was apparantly close to, passed on. So, bad association there. Just thought you would like to know :) |
I love Orchid, but compared to the others I have, it's just not as good.
$600? tsk. |
I see Orchid as a nice preview for better things to come. It showed a band with alot of potential that wasn't quite realized; very good melodic ideas, but they weren't arranged as well and the album as a whole doesn't flow like Still Life or BWP.

Hey.
I am one of the newer users I guess you could say, but I was looking to "get into" Opeth. I have sampled some tracks and I like what I hear a lot! What I was wondering was what album I should get if I want their best work. I realize that everyone has a different opinion on what album is the best, but if I could just get an idea, that would be substantial. Thanks a lot in advance! |

On another note it seems that barely anyone likes deliverance I have given the album a lot more chance lately the only song that really lets it down for me is the last song but the rest is pretty good but it kinda frails in comparsion to others and does anyone know or have any clue when the new album is coming out?

Seperate sentences are your friend. Deliverance's lack of mix as compared to the other albums is what bothers me. Structurally, the playing is a lot more complex especially with Akerfeldt's riffing and Lopez's rhythmic displacements, but there is far less ambience and not many good "medieval-type" showcases for the acoustic guitar. Why is it that the acoustic solo piece is a little throwaway like "For Absent Friends," albeit a pretty one? That's pretty much what bothers me. |

Like in face of Melinda I love that song but sometimes the acoustic melodies turn me off the song. |

Other times I have reccommended ''Deliverance'' only because of the fact that most people I know in real life have no f*****g clue who Opeth is, but love ''the masters apprentices''. And other times I have suggested Morningrise. I'd go Chronological Order. Orchid Morningrise My Arms, Your Hearse Still Life Blackwater Park Deliverance/****ation :chug: |
If you have the money, chronological is the way to go, but Orchid may not be the best intro to the band, possibly putting people off.
I do love Orchid though. |
I think I'm gonna go with Morningrise because it has the awesome "Black Rose Immortal" on it. I will be buying it the same day as I buy "With Teeth" by NIN so I am not really strapped for cash. If I like Morningrise then I will buy more of their albums. Thanks again guys.

I just downloaded black rose immortal.. Very dissapointed with vocals.
|
I find it very hard to get into Orchid and Morningrise :( sorry guys. The songs just don't interest me at all. The only couple that do are 'The twilight is my robe' and 'To bid you farewell'.
My order for albums would have to be. 1.MAYH 2.Still Life 3.****ation 4.Deliverance 5.Blackwater park 6.Orchid 7.Morningirse |
Do you guys know about that Opeth cult? My friend told me something about it.
|
Sorry for killing the thread guys...
|

YES!!!!!!! somebody else who thinks they did a great version of it. A lot of peoplem tell me that they did it terribly, but personally, i think they did it better than maiden :D |
Yes, I actually think Opeth's Remember Tommorrow is actually better than Maiden's original.
oh, and look at this submission I put in the "paint cd covers" thread: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/Eleventeen3/bleh5.bmp |
