The Curse Of Monkey Island - A Pirate I Was Meant To Be
well.. Is this from the game or a band with named after Monkey Island? I've only played MI 1 and 2. There is some sea shanty type music including a ukelele? Some spoken words, a few pirates conversing. These are very loud and it seems as though the music is just meant to be in the background. Must be from the game. The music is actually really good, it's well written and sounds really piratey and fun, I just wish it was easier to hear. Anyway, there's some slightly.. non-humorous spoken lines about being on the ship, doing work, etc. Then there's the singing bits too, spread out over all the verses in the song are the themes that the pirates have to face: not being able to sing in tune, bad breath, attacking an enemy ship, scurvy... These verses are interspersed with some spoken word, nothing stood out as being really funny, so I'm a bit disapponited as I expected much more with from a Monkey Island thing. Maybe I just wasnt listening closely enough. One of the guys is really weak sounding.. must be Guybrush, but I even imagined him to sound tougher than that. The choruses are short and harmonized by the brutes. There are some flashes of quick accordion which is pretty cool, makes me pick up some attention. Well, I think I like the choruses the best because they are the most musical. They end it by saying "I guess the song is over now". And that's it. The music was cool, but obviously not the focus, that's a pity. With that I would have hoped for more humorous lyrics/speech to make it good, but I just didn't find them that funny. I feel a bit let down by it. 6/10 ____________________________________ Gerling - Birdbath - experimental/indie/electronic Darren Hanlon - Falling Aeroplanes - acoustic.. folk? I'm totally for that as long as it's cool with the rules. |

Holy hell, did I ever forget about this. I even went and watched an episode of Scrubs in the middle.
Heard of, but never heard. Interested to hear, though. Kaizer's Orchestra - Resistanten - 2:59 Starts off with a mid-paced, catchy 1-2 rhythm played alternately on a stringed instrument of some kind (unable to make it out exactly) and a clash of percussion. It's a promising start, and since I was expecting something somewhat mournful and/or slow, rather surprising. A double beat introduces the verse. The guy sings in German, I think - he reminds me somewhat of Blixa Bargeld, and I'm unsure whether it is this connection that make me feel the band remind of Einsturzende Neubauten, or whether I already thought that and it's a coincidence. Anyway, I like it. Though I know German, I'm not picking up on everything he says, concentrating as I am on writing the review. It's got a good, jumpy little melody to it though, sounds almost like a nursery rhyme rhythm. He reaches the end of his verse, and what I assume is the chorus starts. Shouts of hallelujah..interesting. Nice support from backing vocalists and deep horns. The next verse starts accompanied by trumpets playing a slightly Spanish sounding bit. He keeps mentioning Hong Kong. It's hard to keep up with all the instruments being used, so I don't think I'll attempt to. It is indeed an orchestra of some kind. About halfway through, I think after another chorus, the song changes a bit. Some strings - violins or something - play that fiddly, quickly-back-and-forth thing that makes a creepy noise and is often used to create suspense in films and television. Italian name, I forget what it is. Anyway, that lasts a short while only, as he is soon re-joined by the pounding beat that's been with him since the start. The horns rejoin, too. His delivery seems to be getting more and more excited, which is all for the better. Everything goes to review-hell towards the end: far too much to type about. Gang chanted vocals, a more fleshed out sound to the song and more feature in the end of this rather chaotic three minute song. 9/10 Definitely piqued my interest. So much to write about for three minutes of song. Boris - Ibitsu (straight ahead rock and roll from Japan) Beck - O Maria (Beck does the bar-room) Oasis / Green Day / Travis / Eminem - Boulevard of Broken Songs (mutant pop) I have links, but I'm at something of a loss as to where to put them. EDIT: links available on GDs linked page, if you scroll down. |
I don't have an ezboards account, though I suppose I might get one sometime soon to help with Forced Listenings. Until then, anyone needing them should contact me, I suppose.

There were never links here. That's crazytalk.

The guitarist is a girl, and she's very good. Glad you liked it.

Mark Lanegan - Don't Forget Me - 3:13
Starts with some piano. I like piano, but this actually reminds me of some Manowar piano. Kind of dramatic sounding. Knowing what little I do of Mark Lanegan though, I doubt this is going to turn into a sweeping metal ballad. Actually it very soon (as in, a couple of seconds in) resolves itself into a fairly familiar, and less dramatic sounding, melody anyway. His voice comes in pretty soon. Low, kinda gravelly. Reminds me of Peter Gabriel. Not sure if that's a good thing or not. I can't really make out what he's saying, but the rest of his band (or instrumentation, at least) joins him more or less as he starts singing. I think I like the bass, though that thought wavers a little because of the tone, for some reason. Anyway, the whole thing's not bad, little breaks in the music after every line or two. I can hear what he's saying more clearly now, though I'm aware that I'm not paying much attention. Piano returns, as a slightly different section kicks in. The piano's very minimal (a few notes here and there), but I like it. Some very pointed, lively-in-a-lazy-way guitar after what I assume is the chorus (he said "don't forget me, dear" at the end, anyway), as the piano returns in more noticeable form to accompany it. Okay, I've decided I do like the bass. Another "don't forget me, dear", and most of the song fades out, leaving only the piano to pick up the somewhat mournful melody it played at the beginning, which is a good way to end it, I think. 7/10 It was alright. I'm not sure how much I'll re-listen to it though, and overall it felt like something was lacking. Not bad, though. Boris - Ibitsu (straight ahead rock and roll from Japan) Beck - O Maria (Beck does the bar-room) Oasis, Green Day, Travis, Eminem - Boulevard of Broken Songs (mutant pop) Faith No More - Easy (Lionel Ritchie cover) Young Heart Attack - (Take Me Back) Mary Jane (high energy rock band's mid-album chillout track) Links to the first three available on SOP's linked page above. I have links to the new ones too, but I must refrain from posting them here. |
Thanks.

They must have all died. I haven't seen FF in particular for ages.

Beck - O Maria
Some honky tonk sounding piano. Ahh, it's Bartender's theme song. Slow swing brushed drums.. very much a song for the bar, with dancing skeletons, etc. His voice sounds strange, a bit like that squeaky guy form Cypress Hill. The music is laid back as.. sourdough. Yes, it just seems like the right word... "sourdough". There's whistly things that give that toe tapping, lazy bar room feel. Ooh, short trumpet solo too. I'm kind of sick of listening to stuff today (I did this audio hardware experiment before), so something like this is nice to kick back to. It doesn't demand attention. Good, because I'm not really paying any. Well, it's 4 minutes long, didn't seem to change that much. I wonder why his voice stood out so much to me.. maybe because the music was pretty subdued. Didn't find the song all that special, maybe I'm just in the wrong mood now. I probably need to listen to it again with more focus, but right now, I really feel like a drink. 7/10 _________________________________ Julee Cruise - Falling - very soft and very slow Electric Light Orchestra - Yours Truly, 2095 - 80's synth rock The Streets - Blinded By The Lights - slightly trancey hiphop Violetine - Any Day - rock Xavier Rudd - Where Do We Fit? - acoustic Powderfinger - Boing Boing - semi-experimental rock Darren Hanlon - Falling Aeroplanes - acoustic.. folk? great lyrics Simon And Garfunkel - Scarborough Fair/Canticle - creepy folk/medieval or something Three Second Memory - The Scorpion And The Frog - heavy rock, too hard to find though... so I don't know why I ever mentioned it |

The Coral - Skeleton Key
Woah, what the hell? I have heard quite a few Coral songs, they're always nice and soothing pop rock. But this, this sounds like something that the Bard from Asterix wrote. Starts slightly circussy, but it soon combines that with a sort of western sound. Like I said the guitar is very weird, very much bent or 'tremelo'd'. The song seems to glide between Circus horror and western adventure chanting. The vocals are a bit of a group shout. There's also a haunting interlude, very much emphasising the Skeleton Key title. The first time I heard this, I was pretty much stunned, but after second listening, it's growing on me, it's still WEIRD. 7.5/10, sorry for the short review. I just can't describe it. :p I'll get some songs soon. Tiger Army - Incorporeal (Psychobilly/Punk) Therapy? - Wall of Mouths (From Suicide Pact -- You first, very hard rock/traditional metal sounding) Cypress Hill - When the Shit goes down (Hip Hop, very chilly) http://p068.ezboard.com/foasis5710frm17.showMessage?topicID=3.topic Links there, in the wrong thread. :upset: |
Sounds like I might get it too...
also, Datura is name of the EP that Scorpion and the Frog is from |
Songs added, sorry about the thread abuse, Spat.

Fourth, actually. :p

Davey Havok does a lot of backing vocals on that album, so he might have done some on that song as well. And they use stand up bass, yeah. I'll find that song, they're obviously big misfits fans and good friends with AFI. Glad you liked it.

The Coral - Simon Diamond
I got it because Superpeer said the other one was interesting. There is a western sounding fingerpicked acoustic guitar to start with, some strange vocal harmonies. Singing about a guy called Simon who sold his soul. Trippy slide guitar with echo and some moody "Oooh". Snare drum builds up as this section is ending. Hey cool, it gets a 60s vibe with the organ, and theres a banjo playing a circus big top musical theme. Such a strange combination, and it works. Seems Simon has become a tree. The verses are short and sweet, followed by the trippy bit. In the middle (which came around quite fast), we get a bit sea-shanty like going "What will become of Simon Diamond", similar to the drunken sailor song. It's a bit faster than before. Followed by some more of the trippy stuff. The last part is the main extended western music, with added sax, and a call and response of "That'll do" as it fades out. How bloody weird was that? It's only 2:30 but there was a lot to say about it. I commend these guys on putting totally unrelated styles together, and making it work. It was hard to get into instantly, but that shouldn't be a bad thing. The lyrics were probably as strange as the music. I like it, I want more. 9/10 _ Powderfinger - Boing Boing - semi-experimental rock Anathema - Shroud Of Frost - doom/death (7:30) Battles - Tras - blippy math rock Decoder Ring - Music Box - soft Bjork-like... snow music. Woo, I found a link for one of the songs. Dibs.

woo awsome
I think I'll start to upload to webspace again, but link to a page that links to the files, not to the files directly... like SOP/GD does, or at least gets away with. The no direct links rule has really slowed FL lately |
Well I found a link to this one by going to http://www.alltheweb.com and searching for them in Audio. It's far from fool-proof, but it gives success now and then.
I've heard quite a bit about these guys, but haven't actually heard anything by them so far. Modest Mouse - Trailer Trash - 5:49 Starts off with some simple acoustic guitar. Might just be the quality of the file I've got, but it sounds a little raw, almost fuzzy, but in a good way, I like it. The rest of the instruments kick in togather, along with the vocals. At first I thought there were two vocalists singing the lines together at the same time, but after a while that seems not to be the case. It's got a very easy-going, lilting feel to it so far. I can make out some of the lyrics, but not all of them, especially as I'm not really paying attention to the lyrics, as I'm typing. The song slows down for a while, with the guitar doing what I'd probably call "chugging", if it didn't sound like an acoustic. Allows the vocals to be a bit more prominent (despite being fairly prominent to begin with). There's a very faint shout in the background too, repeating a word of the line being sung. Strange. Everything I've just described repeats itself once over - the verse and then the chorus - and then a whole new bit begins. I really like this bit; the bass becomes more noticeable, and is playing a very nice, smooth, catchy bassline. The guitar(s) are doing their own thing now, and I like it, all the way through. It lasts a good couple of minutes, right up to the end of the song (the vocals don't make another appearance) but it's interesting all the way through. Very good. Well, for most of the song I was thinking that while there was nothing really wrong with it, it was kind of a 5/10 non-entity, but that end section raises it quite a bit. If I were rating them separately, the end would get quite a high score, but as I'm not; 7/10 Songs; Amon Tobin - Four Ton Mantis (electronica/jazz) Anathema - Are You There? (ambient/progressive? rock/etc) Eva Cassidy - Fields of Gold (cover of Sting's song by the very talented songstress) Frou Frou - Let Go (alt pop/trip hop) I'll work on finding more links, or, failing that, uploading something. |

Sting & The Chieftans - Mo Ghile Mear (Our Hero)
I like what I've heard of Sting/The Police, and celtic music too. Starts with a lone soldier sings a melodic line from atop a mountain, must be in celtic language. Then the same line is repeated with a few brave men singing in a nice harmony with skin drums beating slowly. It's not wartime though, maybe the soldiers are returning home because the music is all happy and joyous and Frodo Baggins like. Folky strummed guitar with a flute starts playing, I think its Sting singing, in English now. Very simple folk tale music, and I do like it. The verse is short, and the chorus is the celtic harmony that was sung at the beginning. This reminds me of a Rod Stewart song.. Sailing, might go get that soon. Well the story goes on, singing about a hero and all the good things he has done, that probably should be obvious given the title. The verses and choruses stay pretty much the same, with the exception of more instruments like fiddle and bagpipes. In the middle the chorus music is played instrumentally, but that's not much different to what happens already.. so yeah. A few times later it's finished. somehow I think it would be really funny to have a sample at the end with "Do we really have to go all the way to Mordor?" "Yes Sam." But I digress... often. Nice sound, too repetitive though, though I don't know how I would change it if I could (except the end). Didn't really stnad out as much as I thought it would. So.... 7/10 ___ Anathema - Shroud Of Frost - doom/death (7:30) Decoder Ring - Music Box - soft Bjork-like... snow music Goldie Lookin' Chain - You Knows I Loves You - sexy rnb/pop parody, UH! Simon And Garfunkel - Scarborough Fair/Canticle - folk Three Second Memory - The Scorpion And The Frog - heavy rock Violetine - Any Day - rock Linkovich, at least for the rare one in the list. |
