Typically you guys say some boring thing.

Nobody responds because it's boring. Example: you saying you're back in town.

I say something controversial

People respond because they want to defend their viewpoint

I start arguments or discussions because I say things that aren't boring

the arguments continue because they're impossible to ignore. ignoring brent does absolutely nothing because there will always be at least one other person who didn't ignore him who responds to his claims. and then there's no point in keeping brent ignored.
