Yeah, Page, originality...
So, I guess that all around you like Beck more? |
beck is the better guitarist all around. he only lacks in composition like badmoon said. technically, his playing is more complex and smoother, miles more versatile than the other two, and a hell of a lot more original. beck wins! beck wins!
Yeah, Beck, originality...
So, I guess that all around you like Beck more?
Not really, I was just trying to give the best and most correct answer. |
Damn, you know what, I typed something wrong... It was suppose to be "Yeah, Page, originality..." Not Beck. Wasn't thinking. I have to fix that...
Anyways, though I admit that Beck is a better player than Clapton and Page, I preffer Clapton much more. Sure, Beck took lead guitar to a whole new level, but I don't get that feeling in me when I hear Beck. I like Clapton. It seems he hasn't really wasted a single note. |
Clapton>Page>Beck
I personally like page's material and songs better, but it doesnt take a genius to know clapton is really the god of guitar. Like slowhand said - he doesnt really waste a note. I learned one of his solos, and it was amazing how smoothly he moved around the fretboard and kept the notes flowed so well. I got chronicles of clapton lately, great CD. |
I guess you can sum it up in three words:
Clapton . . . Is . . . God <fanboy alert> |
How can you say such a thing when tommorow is Easter!
I love lamp. I love lamp. I love Clapton. |
Hrm, I'd appreciate some of your opinions on what to buy next.
Personally, I'd like to buy music from Cream, Hendrix and SRV. And well, I'm having trouble what to buy for Hendrix. Mostly because, I've heard a bunch of Hendrix's songs from different albums, and I'd want to buy his three albums, ideally, but I can't do it all at once. Heh. I mean, Are you Experienced and Electric Ladyland would be my first two choices, but, little wing is my absolute favorite song of his and I don't have a hard copy of it (chalk up bonus points for a masterpiece like castles made of sand for axis, of course, just because I'm not familiar with most of the songs on that album doesn't mean they aren't good). The solution would seem to be to get one of those compilation, "greatest hits" type albums (the "experience hendrix: best of..." would seem to be the best in that department), but that seems almost sacrilegious. Anyway, I'd love to hear your opinion on it. Which should I start out on? |
I have Experience Hendrix: The Best of Jimi Hendrix and I found it to be a very good introductory album to Hendrix work. But I can't really help you out, Hendrix is not my area of expertice. And I really don't know for sure who in here could help you.
Now, with Cream, that's another story. Love Cream. So, if you have any question, I can help. |

I would recommend "Are You Experienced?" to start with because it has most of his greatest hits without that empty feeling in a GH album |

You almost made me feel bad with that post. |

Sorry haha "Don't let this happen to you!" |
Slowhand: I figured Disraeli Gears or "the very best of cream" (a best of album, I know ;)), although I'd be happy to hear your opinion, though. Only got into EC more recently, was wowed by Layla (great album) and have been even more wowed by the Cream stuff I've heard.
The only reason I'm hesitant to get a greatest hits is because there's a good chance I'll want the albums anyway. No need to be doubling up on some of this stuff. I was leaning towards Are you Experienced myself, although the best of seems decently thorough. Or at least as thorough as a single CD can be for hendrix. |
Sorry haha
"Don't let this happen to you!"
Yeah, well, I'm not afraid to admit that I do have a few 'best of' in my CD collection. Some of them have been very helpful to me when I want to check out a band. |

Eric Clapton cover Hendrix's Little Wing in that album and drastically change it. I don't know if a Hendrix fan would like it, but I preffer it more than the original. It's also runs about 5 minutes, so it's longer than the original. And Disraeli Gears is perhaps my favourite Cream album. But I first got The Very Best of Cream and there I decided which era I wanted to dealt with, and decided for Disraeli Gears. That's what I do with 'best of's. I listened to them, see which point of their muscial career I like the most and then I buy the albums. |

They almost always are, but I always feel stupid when I end up buying albums that have it all anyway. But it's so hard trying to find the right album to start out with. I usulally get one and then people are like "Oh, well, that one isn't their best, you should have gotten ____ etc. EDIT: I have 12 :D |

whats not to like about sgt peppers? i love classic rock and i have an extreme fetish with the beatles. i also like zeppelin, van morrison, the doors, the ramones, alice cooper, cream, some elton john, creedence clearwater revival, the who, some pink floyd, chuck berry, aerosmith and AC/DC. i think that rock is coming back because there are about 10 people in my class of like 50 that classic rock is all they listen to. i am only 15 and i know a lot of stuff about classic rock and when like me and my dad are listening to the radio i always know more of the songs than him and thats mostly all he did when he was young was listen to the radio

Yeah, like I said, it's a great album. Why Does Love Got to be so Sad has to be one of my favorites (although that's Duane, isn't it?), and I'm not even sure most people would know it. Although there's just so much good music on that album. (That's an instance where I'm glad I got the album. I don't know if I'd have gotten into them had I gotten simply an EC best of.) As for Cream, again the problem is, you miss out on stuff no matter what you get. If Disraeli Gears, then you miss out on White Room, if Wheels of Fire, you miss out on Tales of Brave Ulysses or Sunshine... or... you get my point. I think I'm gonna start with the best of for cream. |

Tales of Brave Ulysses is such an amazing song
|
Good choice. There you have also Crossroads.
Crossroads... oooh, yeah. First time I heard Cream's version was probably when I popped it into the CD player in my school's radio station. Good stuff. And, elaborating a bit more on what I said before, since I've listened to Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, I've been realizing how an album can make a comprehensive whole, so I've been wanting to err on the side of the album, usually. Walrus: Hell yeah. The lyrics are so perfect, with the alliteration and all, they just flow so great, on top of that crystal clear imagery. And then, the guitar work is just... superb. |
Tales of Brave Ulysses is such an amazing song
You know that Hendrix got a sample of Tales of Brave Ulysses and liked the wah-wah sound, so he recorded Burning of the Midnight Lamp. And because Disraeli Gears' release got delayed, Hendrix album came out first and everyone credits the introduction of the wah-wah into rock to Hendrix. Clapton had a litle grudge with Hendrix because of that. He thought that the wah-wah was his signature thing and that Hendrix stole it. |

Yeah, Clapton and Hendrix was a love/hate thing. Pete Townshend said he didn't use the wah-wah because he didn't want Clapton to be mad at him. |
Heh, I bet that Clapton to Hendrix grudge lasted a LONG time
|
Heh, I bet that Clapton to Hendrix grudge lasted a LONG time
I suppose it lasted until the day Hendrix died. They both respected each other, and I think that Clapton saw Hendrix as his only real competition. It's kind of ironic that Hendrix first break became in England, and was known there more than in America. And for Clapton and Cream it was the other way around. But Clapton respected Hendrix so much, it was after he died that he turned to use Strats, and went on to only use Strats later on. Oh, and before Hendrix died, he began to use Gibsons. I think that Clapton would've turned to Strats just to be his opposite. |

I do. It's very good. |

My favourite clapton fact is that when he first saw "clapton is god" written somewhere he thought it said clapton is good. And then when he realised what it really said he was really taken aback. |

People were saying back then that God wasn't dead, he picked up a Les Paul and was playing the blues. They idolized Clapton. One of my favourite stories of Clapton is when he went to see Hendrix played for the first time. When the show was over, no one was impressed by him. Everyone thought that Clapton was better than that 'show-off.' But on the way to his apartment, Clapton was on a taxi with his rommate and was floored. His rommate asked him what was wrong and Clapton answered that his career was over. |
