Yes, but there's an intermediary product:

Iron and Sulfur combine to form Iron(II) Sulfide, a salt:

8 Fe(s) + S8(s) + heat --> 8FeS

The salt is then heated so it decomposes:

FeS(s) + O2(g) --> SO2(g) + Fe(s)

That's a metathesis reaction. :p

So yeah...that's how iron ore is formed...one way, anyway...
gav If I put HCl on Mg...the gas produced is hydrogen right?
Not always...it depends. You'd have to look at the activity series. If magnesium is higher than hydrogen (which I think it is...copper, gold, platnium, silver, and those types of metals are below hydrogen), then yes, diatomic hydrogen gas is produces, leaving us with MgCl2.

Chem was my best science, but I didn't take it in grade 12, for some reason. Instead, I opted for physics and almost failed.

irishslappop 10-16-2005 08:09 PM

now children, we all know that physics > chemisty. /pissoffgav

although without one, the other doesnt exsist.........

I was offered AP chem this year, but the teacher is a nazi. I hate it when really interesting classes are taught by bad teachers, turns me off of the subject

isn't taking a science this year :upset:

Physics is too bleh...I like chem. I love blowing stuff up and then explaining what happened. :D

Yeah. Good teachers can make a subject amazing, though. My Canadian History teacher last year was sooo amazing, and he completely made the class awesome (and trust me, Canadian history is soooooooooo boring).

i like building a catapult that launches a golf ball over the school into the winery across the street 900 feet away.

nicatterberry 10-16-2005 08:11 PM

Higher level math and science classes at my school both have horrible teachers. One is smart, but never admits to being wrong and is very strict, the other is just a horrible teacher.

Why not go blow it up with some fun chemistry? :D

Although I do see your point...I like physics a lot, just not nearly as much as I like chemistry. :D
