I dislike Symphony X for one reason.

Crap Name.

But, Yes, So is Dream Theater
Do you like Porcupine Tree than?

BTW, I've decided that my fav. of 6DOIT in order go:

The Glass Prison > Misunderstood > Blind Faith > The Great Debate = Disappear

MAthiAS 09-04-2005 09:51 AM
Well in almost every Racer X song I have heard ( something like 30 ) He has solos who are all the way 16th sexuplets. And that's in my opinion wanking. And I was talking about the 'young' petrucci. From IaW to SFAM
Speed =/= wankage

Most of Petrucci's solos are just scalar patterns played really fast, often chromatic patterns even. That's wankage.

MrBenners: Yes.

that sounds more like Slayer solos to me.
slayer bores the crap out of me

WheepingGuitar39 09-04-2005 10:04 AM

Yup
the Gigantour show at Montreal kicked ***. It was filmed for the DVD release.
all the bands were ****.
But then Dream Theatre came on and W O W.
GREAT stuff.

and to DirtyQuebec6969, I refuse to believe you are from quebec.

Odd time signatures? Have you ever heard of Pink Floyd?
One of Dream Theatre's biggest influences? Pink Floyd? hmm yea.
And we all know Quebecers are in love with Pink Floyd.
So you equals not Quebec.

On another note..
Dave Mustaine later on in the show had the Quebec flag wrapped around him.. with fireworks going off, what a site.

thunderzstruck 09-04-2005 10:12 AM
We did something like that a few pages back actually. :p
And I was the one who brought that up too :-D

Slayer has some great riffing, but every last one of their solos sucks balls.

bwnstl 09-04-2005 12:24 PM

Am I the only one who absolutely loves Disappear off of 6DOIT? I won't necessarily say it's my favorite song off of Disc 1, but it's the one I've been listening to the most lately.

Darkness 09-04-2005 12:25 PM

Its decent, a bit similar to the last song on Awake... which's title has slipped my mind.

MAthiAS 09-04-2005 12:26 PM

Space Dye Vest > Disappear

Darkness 09-04-2005 01:30 PM

Yeah thats the one. One of my top 3 Dream Theater songs. Forsure... I don't think they have a more emotional song.

first off I want to say dream theater is pretty funky, and by funky I mean it in a good way, because they are rather sweet :chug:

ok but weeping guitar i think we need to get one thing straight  in quebec, which should be its own country only the anglos listen to pink floyd mostly, les francophones are all up in Gilles Vilnaughssfdsd (sp?)'s grill, like gens du pays, so don't try and pull a fast one, old pierre trudeau

anyway I think quebec should be its own country, its a nation of people with a seperate language, and a diversified economy and a large independent sentiment, besides their flag is better than canadas so

in conflusion: weeping guitar, I repsectfully disagree with your anti-sovereignty statement

I heard DT talks about Rene Levesque and the parti quebecois in the song "Only a Matter of Time".... true or false..?

WheepingGuitar39 09-04-2005 03:23 PM

That was alot of crap I had to read on your part.. buuuuut.
I'm a seperatist by the way.

and im sorry but the french quebecers listen to Pink Floyd A L O T more than anyone else. This is known.
Anyway if you want to talk about pinkfloyd we'll talk about it there.
And everything you said sounded like what a toilet bowl sounds like when you flush it.

I like it a lot too. The keyboard part in the beggining is really creepy and sad sounding. Not my favorite on the album, but nonetheless, it is good.

bwnstl 09-06-2005 12:32 AM

Yeah, exactly! It's such a scary, creepy, emotional sound that he gets with the keyboard. And it's such an emotional song too, I love it. I guess deep down I'm just an emo-boy. :(

Sacrificial Teddybears 09-06-2005 02:44 AM

the band would have done soooo much better with a better/no singer, the singer has prevented this band from being as great as they had the potential to be

Kirk's Puppet 09-06-2005 02:48 AM

I don't understand what's the hate for LaBrie, I think he's fantastic.

I love Octavarium by the way, it's my favourite DT album currently.

Any recommendations of Muse songs that have inspired Octavarium?

if you liked Never Enough, you'll like Stockholm Syndrome. you might also like Hysteria and Time is running out (the part just before the chorus of 'these walls' sounds like a part of TIRO). thats all i can think of when i think about Octavarium

lol, I was just listening to my Octavarium, and was gonna come here to ask everyone else if they saw a heavy influence of Muse on Never Enough. The whole first half of it sounds just like Stockholm Syndrome... it doesn't help that James sings in the exact style of Muse's singer in it too... maybe he was trying to sound just like it. Also in Panic Attack, they sound like Muse at around 3:50, which is funny, because right at that point the vocals say "Hysteria" lol. Anyone else notice that?

MAthiAS 09-06-2005 12:05 PM

Yes, you're not the first one.

I hated James the first couple times I heard the band. But the instrumentation was to much to resist, now I really like James. Sometimes a bit annoying, but still very good. He can hit some really nice notes, especially on Awake. :thumb:

MAthiAS 09-06-2005 04:59 PM

If you think James sucks listen to WDADU.

i suppose in time he will grow on me, but right now i feel his voice is too whiney, and the instrumentation is awesome to make up for James Labrie's singing. and well ive only just got into Dream Theater, so...yea....

Darkness 09-06-2005 05:30 PM

Give it some time, and listen to A Change In Seasons. :D

Awake is starting to become my favorite album of theirs. At first, not so much.

123456 man. That's how I felt. Same thing happened with Opeth, now I love them

red barchetta 09-07-2005 06:11 AM

i prefer listening to James sing rather than listen to a 5 minute Petrucci/Ruddess solo

nowitzki 09-07-2005 09:00 AM
i prefer listening to James sing rather than listen to a 5 minute Petrucci/Ruddess solo
Well when you can get both in a song thats perfect. Which is why I never enjoy listening to a LTE album as much as a DT album. They are excellent at times but cant compete with DT.

national_chaos_jolliffe 09-07-2005 09:01 AM
hahaha yea, good enough. I do like Dream Theater. The whole band is massively talented. I have the Portnoy drumming dvds and he is really a cool guy. He is a good drummer, I don't think he is a phenominal drummer, but very good.
i agree fully, their amazing, myung especially he's such an influence...

blasphemy

123, if the lyrics are Myung's.

They need to stop with the JP vs. JR races. Boring.

Darkness 09-07-2005 03:15 PM

I like Petruccis lyrics as well as Myungs.

MAthiAS 09-07-2005 06:34 PM

Petrucci's lyrics can sometimes be great, but Myung's are always the best of any of theirs. It really sucks he doesn't submit lyrics anymore, and never did too much.

Very true. Lifting Shadows Off a Dream has really cool lyrics.
