Call to all user of this thread.

I had this idea to write an introduction to emo, with all you guys' help, in the form of a text. Kids who talk about the Used, Dashboard Confessional etc labelling them as "emo" piss me off and I can't bear it no more. And I can't point them to fourfa.com, it's too long of a read.

Basically, give a detailed definition of emo, including historical points, founding bands, etc... Everyone could give a few characteristics of the genre or a point to specify and we could sum it all in one text I'd carry in my pocket to educate ignorants. Of course we could post it right here and make it a reference for the emo genre, something solid enough to educate people and point them in the right directions but not dictionary-length.

I usually start arguments about emo by pointing out that emo means "emotional hardcore", the hardcore point being very important, because all bands falsely labelled as "emo" are usually very mainstream and contain no elements of hardcore.

Then, I specify that the bands labelled as "emo" in the mainstream are classified as such because they associate with the emo "slice-your-wrists" culture and "style", which has pretty much nothing to do with the actual musical genre.

I'll think of more later. Fire away, please.

Emotional Hardcore, Emo for short, is a genre started in 1985 by bands like Rites of Spring and Moss Icon who took the basic foundations of hardcore and added in artsy guitar lines, poetic lyrics, and passionate vocals. Over time, emo has evolved into a few different styles. There's traditional emo (Moss Icon, Driftwood), hardcore emo (Reach Out, Heroin), mid-west indie influenced (Rockets and Blue Lights, Nuzzle), and screamo (You and I, Usurp Synapse). Although it HAS evolved, absolutley none of the mainstream bands like Hawthorne Heights and Thursday are emo or an evolution of emo. Most, if not all of those bands are either Pop-Punk or Post-Hardcore. The decision to call bands like alexisonfire screamo was arbitrary and mis-informed. Don't be fooled by what the media tells you.

Or something.

:thumb: Great also for clearing out how the actual media-classified emo bands really aren't.

Oh and nervous light of sunday is amazing (to whoever posted the link) I also thought they were a rip-off of CTTS due to their name.

Due to the nature of its bands, emo is not very well known to the public. Most emo bands had very short lives and some of them never released an actual record (only demos and such). This made it impossible for some bands to gain a vast reputation while they were still active. This is not true for all bands though, as there are a few successful acts in the emo genre which are still active and vastly known by the emo "community", Circle Takes The Square and Hot Cross being very good examples.

The emo musical genre has NOTHING to do with the emo "slice-my-wrists" culture. Emo, musically speaking, is not about cutting your wrists, cutting your hair so it covers 50% of your face, wearing girl pants when you're a male, putting mascara all over your eyes, etc. Emo is about making hardcore music in an artsy/poetic way to focus on a varied specter of emotions. Yes, most music is about emotion... but emo is hardcore-derived; while hardcore focuses on feelings of rage and alienation through a political struggle, emo is generally more introspective.

I'm stretching it too much, I'll summarize this. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong somewhere.

natefitforbattle 08-02-2005 02:26 AM

i saw ampere and sinaloa last night. it was so nuts man, the bands played in a boxing ring and a bunch of kids were throwing themselves against the ropes and jumping off the turnbuckle during ampere's set. it was one of the best shows i've ever been to. i also picked up their 10", great stuff.

Wow, I'm new to this stuff, but I've got to say, thanks to DFelon, Cbmartinez and the others that were active posters on the first thirty or so pages of this beast. I've d/led a few songs, what songs i can, some Antioch Arrow, Heroin, Angels Hair, Saetia and some Bleeding Kansas. Man that is some awesome stuff, I can't wait until i get paid friday..Blood Brothers and Hot Cross, here I come.

Thanks again guys, you've converted me, I was a closet "fake emo" ist. But I proudly proclaim my fondness of this stuff. But yea, I don't know much, but I'm getting what I can. Keep up the education of uninformed newbs!

RetiredAt21 08-02-2005 07:53 PM

From First to Last are terrible. But the singer is SO dreamy.

telemore 08-02-2005 07:57 PM

Meh, by fake emo, I mean like Silverstein and the like.
...
And I actually got into this stuff by accident, I heard some things about Fear Before, so I picked up Art Damage, and eventually found this thread, got it stuck in my head.

natefitforbattle 08-02-2005 08:12 PM

Art Damage is really good but also pick up Odd How People Shake which is better in my opinion.
Nothing wrong with fake emo. Unless it's From First to Last. I dig new Hopesfall and Underoath and the occasional Atreyu.
srt-4 08-03-2005 11:53 AM

i have suicide notes and butterfly kisses on my mp3 player for working out. i don't want to have music i like a lot on there and hear it so many times over and over that it takes something away from it. so i have them on there, and i really don't think that cd is that bad.

and speaking of new underoath, their new cd really is going to be harder. i was skeptical myself before, but it has been confirmed to me.

I like Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses it's just that The Curse is so god **** bad that I just hate Atreyu so much that I couldn't listen to that album for a while.

RetiredAt21 08-03-2005 05:41 PM

I used to like Atreyu...alot. Kinda embarrassing.

whiteminority 08-03-2005 08:37 PM

I wish Underoath would go back to their old stuff.

whiteminority 08-03-2005 08:52 PM

Well they could at least try to emulate it. I lost all respect for them when I saw them and 70% of the crowd there for them were 12 year old girls who left after Reinventing Your Exit.

Wow 08-03-2005 09:12 PM

I was hanging out with a girl and she was like "Do you like Underoath?" and I said I dug some of their stuff but wasn't too into most of it. And she was like "Man, Re-inventing Your Exit is the best song ever." She didn't know of any of the old stuff or that it even existed. I wanted to throw her from a second story window (lololol).

RetiredAt21 08-03-2005 09:14 PM

Hahaha. Throwing her from a second story window might make her commit an act of depression.
