I wanna get that EP... what's it called A Sad Day Under The Sun, A Still Day... whatever... the title track is really good, and Patterns In The Ivy Pt. II is probably Opeth's best soft song IMO.

azbassman 04-27-2005 07:51 PM

Yeah im havent been into opeth for the longest time and the only album i own is BWP.........i need to get more.....the next album i was thinking about getting was either morningrise or MAYH

Morningrise, definately

Wow I really can't believe most of you dislike Orchid. That Album is the reason why I got into Opeth :) I, for one, abosutely love Orchid. You guys seriously think it's that bad? I know the recording wasn't all that great...but that's what makes it so intriguing. I listen to it frequently and absolutely love it. Only because Orchid opened up my Opeth Obsession, I think it has become the best Album I have bought in years :D
If I didn't buy it, I wouldn't of made this thread.

Yeah, Orchid is good Flynn, but their other albums are superior-er

I cannot put all of Opeth's recordings in order of importance. I seriously cannot. One week I'll say My Arms, Your Hearse is my fav...then a few months later, I'm into Still Life...And I think all their albums are superior...Especially Orchid.

I like Orchid quite a bit...it wasn't really as 'progressive' as their other works, it was more just melodic death/doom with some simple-ish interludes (compare the soft parts on In Mist She Was Standing to the complexity of the soft parts of Bleak or other songs).
But what it lacks in technicality, it makes up for by the sheer atmosphere it creates, which I think is unmatched by their other albums and completely unique. Morningrise seemed to be more about guitar harmonies, Blackwater Park about dark and evil chords (Leper Affinity or Drapery Falls), but Orchid is just all about the general vibe that defines Opeth for me.
In mist she was standing is one of Opeth's best songs in my opinion, and Silhouette is in a different league since it has little to do with the musical style of anything I listen to, but I think it is the best 3 minutes of music ever written. Forest of October really lives up to the mood, I think. The intro part and outro part both have that same feel that occurs throughout the song, and despite the many transitions within the song it feels cohesive.
Since then Opeth has improved in many ways; better song structures and more interesting distorted and clean guitar parts, but in some ways they have not matched that immediate barrage of riffs which started off their recorded career.

And I have no idea why I typed so much.

bucket 04-27-2005 08:31 PM

1. Orchid
2. Morningrise
3. Blackwater Park
4. D*mnation
5. MAYH
6. Still Life
7. Deliverance

I swear I've posted my favorite Opeth's about 27 times in this thread and each time brings a completely different order.

Morningrise is the album I have listened to the most. I can't count how many times I have listened to that Album, and never get sick of it. I always listen to it all the way through...Never just one song. (I bend that rule for ''Black Rose Immortal'') You leave me at a fork in the road with this post...Cause Morningrise has insane originality and tone. Yet I value Orchid the same. I don't think there will ever be another album like Morningrise. A well thought out masterpiece. :thumb:

In what ways does Morningrise differ from Blackwater Park?

Kaiwaz 04-27-2005 08:37 PM
In what ways does Morningrise differ from Blackwater Park?
Night and Day.

Blackwater park has more ''Hidden'' guitar in it...if that makes sense. There is a LOT of tracks on Blackwater Park...As for Morningrise, they could of recorded it using not even 8 Tracks. The storyline basis and the song definitions are totally opposite of each other. ''To Bid You Farewell'' is mourning, Life Lost. ''Blackwater Park'' is revenge...
''Sick Liasions raise this monumental Mark...the sun sets forever...over..Blackwater Park...''
Without the vocals, I'd think they were 2 different bands. There's no similarity in guitars between the 2 Albums. Drums are really close...but like I said...Night and Day.

Both of which are Epic Albums :D

Kage 04-27-2005 08:38 PM

haha. Care to elaborate?

Kaiwaz 04-27-2005 08:46 PM

Hey Kage...is that an Avatar of you? I used to know someone in South Dakota that looked exactly like that avatar. Carbon Copy.

I think the bass playing in Morningrise is better than any other album... Advent's bass and guitars are twisted into a ball of stringy happiness. :)

Kaiwaz 04-27-2005 08:53 PM

I've read your posts, Eleventeen...the feeling is mutual. :)

Kage 04-27-2005 08:53 PM

No, that's not me. It's Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails.

And that's a good analysis of Morningrise/BWP. I think I'll check out Morningrise next.

One of the songs I am currently learning how to play is Credence. The outro is so beautiful. It makes me zone-out whenever I hear it.

I need to start posting more...I've been playing The World Of Warcraft since I joined this forum.
Wow I really can't believe most of you dislike Orchid.
 My thoughts exactly.Orchid rules. The raw recording was a bit to get used to, but now I consider it to be a good thing. It gives it a really saddened feel(If that makes sense). One thing I REALLY LOVE about it is the dualing guitar melodies.I can listen to it with just the left channel on, the right channel, or both channels. It's a different album all three ways.I love it!!

My list goes:

1.Still Life
2.Orchid
3.Blackwater Park
4.Damnation
5.My Arms, Your Hearse
6.Deliverance

Sadly, I havent had the fortune of getting Morningrise yet.I've heard 3 songs off it and they are great.
