In my reigion class, we've started watching the movie Crash, and I'm loving it so far. I can predict many bad things about to surface, and to be honest, all the racially controversial movies we're watching to relate to this social justice theme is starting to get to me. :(
I wanted to get that when they had the big liquidation sale at the local Suncoast, but by the time I got there, it was already gone. Along with Bourne Identity, Bourne Supremacy, Seven Samurai, Man with the Screaming Brain, Usual Suspects, and The Howling.
So I picked up Carnival of Souls; sex, lies, and videotape; and Witness instead. I go to McDaniel College. The film resources are scant here aside from cameras and the like, but that's just forced me to be more creative. You'd be surprised. You know what I'm using for a boom this summer? A $30 unidirectional mic I bought at RadioShack duct taped to a spare plastic broom handle from Lowes. You know what I use to light most of my sets? Where I don't have natural lighting, I string up Japanese lanterns I bought at Target for 5 bucks a pop. My actors provide their own wardrobe. I mostly write around props I already own. I have my own camera (Canon ZR80), and am trying to get my own editing software, but technically speaking I really don't have much. I'd watch that. Having the balls to be persistent usually gets you what you need. Leni Riefenstahl used that concept to its fullest to film Olympia. That's going to be a bitch.
Hey what do you think about my proposition for the music video? |
Man. It's great you picked such a passionate career to pursue. I want to take my life to that point to a certain extent. I'm more into photography and culinary arts. They're things that I'd actually like to pursue.

We're actually lucky to have found this guy with a great camera and a decent boom and some lighting. On our three previous movies, we had literally no lighting except natural light and the occaiosnal lamp that we would position. I guess it's almost more fun, it's like you have to improvise and find ways to do things, and in the end it makes it more of an experience, regardless of the end product.
Having the balls to be persistent usually gets you what you need. Leni Riefenstahl used that concept to its fullest to film Olympia.
That's true. It's something that my friend is really good about, although it can become a pain in the neck when it's focused on you. But, really, he's come a far way with persistence.
That's going to be a bitch.
No kidding. It will most likely involve a lot of quick cuts, blurred-out images, darkness, and maybe some ice. |

That's the lyrical concept for Bleeding Persistance by the way. |
"Olympia" was the propoganda piece about the 1936 Olympics, yes? Riefenstahl presents an odd picture to me. "Triumph of the Will" is like "Birth of a Nation" to me: a classic of filmmaking innovation, and yet put to the use of the most reprehensible of social messages. Kind of interesting. |
Hey what do you think about my proposition for the music video?
It'll be a challenge, but I'd like you to see if you can get the band together on IM to talk with me a little, say, this weekend? I'd like to brainstorm a little with you guys, and try to work out something feasible. Also, I want to figure out a way I can get some clips of you guys performing to weave in there if possible. Nope. What does it argue?
"Olympia" wasn't propoganda at all. She was asked to make the d0cumentary, and she leaped at the chance. That's great then. I'll try to get everyone together for an IM. The clips will be ****ty, because all we have to record is one of those hand held cameras but maybe it'll work to our advantage. We'd man-love you forever though. Anything you'd like in exchange besides being credited with making it? Has anyone ever read Native Son by Richard Wright? It's really good. |
Nope. What does it argue?
It simply presents a biography of her life and shows what her side of the story is. In a lot of cases, different versions of the story are essentially her word versus Goebbels, who was quite infatuated with her.... Guess which person I'm more inclined to believe. I do feel sorry for her in that she told of an overwhelming sense of guilt she felt for being such a pawn in Hitler's plans and never realizing just what he had intended all along. But then again, she wasn't the only one who was fooled.
Well, I've never seen it, and as it was about the 1936 Olympics as far as I know I simply assumed that it was another Third Reich political piece as Germany did everything in its power to set up that Olympics as the forum for how German supermen stood up to the world's athletes.
Actually, Hitler wanted nothing to do with the Olympics. Riefenstahl wanted shots of him in the stands to show how Germany was being a gracious host, and it took a lot of nagging on her part because Hitler didn't want to see blacks or any other non-whites winning anything. For the most part, the film focuses on the virtues of self-discipline and athletic strength.
That's great then. I'll try to get everyone together for an IM. That's no problem at all. A while back I was thinking about having us play over the recording and tape it and then I thought, it'd be really cool to have a real music video. Then I remembered you were going to school for film. |
Well, me and my girlfriend have made a pretty momentous decision about our future, and I'm pretty pleased with it, all things considered.
Next year, the both of us will be studying abroad in different countries. Becca will be going to Oxford in England, and I will be going to a school in Florence, Italy. We would be seperated by a little less distance than what is typically the case when we live in our seperate states when we're home, but nevertheless seperated. We decided today that for the sake of our respective sanities and for our respective experiences, we would allow ourselves to date other people if we felt like it (even perhaps allowing ourselves a modicum of intimacy, within reason of course) but to remain mostly faithful to one another. We intend to visit as much as we can, although the actual liklihood of such a thing with any sort of frequency is slim. We decided that this was the only middle ground we could come up with that would ensure three things: 1.) That our relationship had a hope of survival beyond our studies abroad, because either other way it would be too stifling to remain vehemently faithful and there would be a void with nothing but meaninglessness to fill if we decided to break up for a year and return to it after it was done 2.) That our futures were set in such a way that we could concievably accept and live with the possibility of experiencing someone else on a permanent basis with a minimum of pain on the other party's part (as I said, a breakup in either a stifling or a superficial mode would only lead to vast pain--with the leeway, there's always possibility and openness and we have to live with that) And 3.) That we have fun while abroad, and not spend all our time worrying over the other person and stifling ourselves. It's hard to imagine myself dating others, but who knows what the future will bring? All things considered, I'm glad we didn't make too rash of a decision. This really does seem the most reasonable, if slightly unideal, solution to the problem of our year-long seperation. |
Sounds like a lot of unclear middle ground, Lucas. I mean, what happens if she thinks holding hands is too much, but you spread your wild seed with any number of spicy sicilians.
Sounds like a lot of unclear middle ground, Lucas. I mean, what happens if she thinks holding hands is too much,
She doesn't. She herself named making out and cuddling etc. as acceptable. And dating, but I already mentioned that.
but you spread your wild seed with any number of spicy sicilians.
We care enough about each other that we wouldn't disrespect the other by cheating in such a way. We would let the other know before engaging in such activity, because frankly if either of us were going to have sex, it would be due to a deep emotional involvement, and therefore it would be the end of our relationship almost certainly and wouldn't be in the spreading the seed fashion. And of course that description only really makes sense for me, as she does not make any seed to speak of, but you know. |
Well, I didn't expect her to be the seed-spreading type, anyway.

If you've ever taken a peek at L&R thread, you'll see that you're faring much better than others in similar situations. Hope things work out.

Lucas, you asked me a while ago what Ungoliant sounds like. I don't know, but I remember seeing them mentioned somewhere. A look at metal-archives suggest they aren't very good.

Haha, I'll check it out. MORE PEOPLE NEED TO VOTE IN THE MX COMPOSITION COMPETITION THREAD |
I know next to nothing about electronica, though. It's not really my field, and I don't really think I can effectively critique and evaluate any of the submissions.

Are you kidding? You like Ozric Tentacles. Just listen and explain whether you liked it and why and congratulate everybody on their intricate instrument and synth and drum programming. Anyways, 'tis time for bed for me. :) Good night everyone. |
I envy you right now. I can't sleep and I have to get up early tomorrow. This always seems to come at inconvenient times.
I'm going to try reading until my eyes go bleary. Worked last time. |

That's sort of what my gf and I have going right now... I hate the middle ground confusion-ness...but at the same time it's not an issue because neither of us is really looking elsewhere. We're together and not... Totally confusing :-\ |
That usually works for me too but I've had no reason to fall asleep lately (as in I haven't had to get up early lately).
|
Man. I have to do an oral presentation on Capital Punishment later today. I think I'm gonna mess it up.

DT concert was pretty boss last night. They didnt play a single song I wanted them to :upset: |
These days I can't tell if people who say "DT" are referring to Dark Tranquility or Dream Theater.

Dark Tranquility are usually described with more visceral adjectives and profanity. Because they're just that metal. Anyway, you said you were studying abroad in Florence. You need to find some time while you're there to visit the Sorrento Coast and Venice. I was supposed to be in Budapest next semester, but unfortunately my financial situation does not permit. :upset: |
dream theater, sorry man

Haha, I see. It's a shame, the music I've heard of theirs is astoundingly beautiful, but I can't stand that "braawr" semi-shouted vocal style. Still, it's better than Matt Heafy or Alex However-the-hell-you-spell-it from Atreyu. "Squawk, squawk, cough, squawk!!!" |
