I love Inventing Modernism homework:
As I Lay Dying Vardaman, the child in the Bundren household, has a number of very enigmatic sayings and bewildering conversations -- for both reader and child -- in As I Lay Dying . At one point, he declares, "My mother is a fish." A little later, he has the following exchange with Darl, the second-oldest brother who has returned from World War I with a serious psychological disorder (probably what today we would call "post-traumatic stress disorder"). But my mother is a fish. Vernon seen it. He was there. "Jewel's mother is a horse," Darl said "Then mine can be a fish, cant it Darl?" I said Jewel is my brother. "Then mine will have to be a horse, too," I said. "Why?" Darl said. "If pa is your pa, why does your ma have to be a horse just because Jewel's is?" "Why does it?" I said. "Why does it, Darl?" Darl is my brother. "Then what is your ma, Darl?" I said. I haven"t got ere one," Darl said. "because if I had one, it is was. And if it was, it can't be is. Can it?" "No," I said. I am. Darl is my brother. "But you are, Darl," I said. "I know it," Darl said. "That"s why I am not is. Are is too many for one woman to foal." What do you make of this conversation? How does the paradigm and rhetoric of modernism shed light on its meaning? In modernist terms, what is Vardaman trying to figure out? How does the logic of the child resemble the logic of dreams? Using the same method of analysis, how do we account for Darl's assertion that he is not an "is" but an "are"? What Freudian resonances for Oedipal conflict and for dream associations does his psychologically distressed revelations suggest? What are the chilling implications of his final comment that "Are is too many for one woman to foal."? So yeah, I wanna die. |
Ouch.
.... Ouch. |
I just watched Dogville. Incredible film.
I was just thinking about this movie a week or two ago. It really is an incredible movie and something that I need to watch again. |

Play the "why were you going through my ****" card. It always seems to make things worse... But who knows, maybe you'll get lucky. |
This is for YDLoad, since you haven't seen the Fall of Troy live.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1678017355922625031&q=fall+of+troy Sound quality sucks, but you get the general essence of it I suppose. |

Better than wading through their stash of adult videos? |

So....moonboots.

Dear Zappa:
I've been looking into getting an Alesis or a Korg lately, leaning more towards the Alesis for the drum machine (even though I heard it wasnt any good?), and I'm pretty sure you have one? Do you like it/was it worth the $$$? Thank you, Sam aka biografiend. |

Watchin' more of it now. The guitarist wants to be Omar Rodriguez so bad it's pitiful. |

Um, I could try, but I don't know any songs from the first album (besides the ones repeated on the second, obviously). And I don't really have time to watch it again at the moment (Family Guy, American Dad :) ). |

On that google video engine if you search for "fall of troy" there's a vid of Ghostship Part Five. I haven't watched it yet, but yeah. Also, a Weezer cover, strange enough. |
Sounds like better pickings than the google video results for "dillinger escape plan." Just 30 seconds of some cameraphone garbage with no real sound at all. The band moves just like I remember, but I have no idea what they're playing.

Have you seen any of Von Trier's other films? I need to see Dancer In The Dark, but my store doesn't have it. |

Dancer in the Dark is a great film, but it makes me feel awful after watching it. I really want to see Dogville. The style of the film intrigues me. |

Every little thing that you say or do, I'm hung up.
I hung up on you. Waiting for your call baby night and day, I'm fed up. I'm tired of waitin' on you. |
I left school early because I was feeling rather ill. Is anyone else sick at the moment?
|
I've been sick for five days. And 6 days ago I got my flu shot. I'm pissed.
|
My friend has the flu and pneumonia right now. I hope I don't get the flu as I've had before and it was really bad.

Unfortunately, no I haven't. I saw The Five Obstructions which features him in it, though. That one isn't actually a film - it's more of an experiment and test in the medium. But - I work at Hollywood Video and we have Dancer in the Dark - so I'll be seeing that in a couple weeks once I return home. |
