Sorry to go off topic here, but has anybody heard An Evening With John Petrucci And Jordan Rudess? It's absolutely amazing...specially Rudess. I knew he was good, but never knew this good...
I have heard bits...being the DT fanboy I am, I was incredibly impressed.

I'm not sure if what I heard was that or Liquid Tension Experiment. Much better than what I heard from Dream Theater.

LTE is like DT without vocals, An evening with isnt really. Though I have only heard a little of it.

Riva 03-27-2006 05:53 PM

I prefer LTE to Dream Theater, but I did spark a little interest in the latter again last night. I do still love The Glass Prison, and Images and Words.

i am the robots 03-27-2006 05:54 PM

I've really gotten quite sick of Dream Theater, I dunno.

I haven't had enough time to form an opinion on LTE though.

Glass Prison is my favorite DT song...I think.

I havnt heard a whole lot though. And, I havnt listened to any DT ina long time.

Then it was probably An Evening With. All I know is this song was playing on the speakers at a local record shop, and I asked the guy what it was and he said he didn't put it on, but he knew it was one of John Petrucci's projects.

I bought it awhile back.. it was cool to listen to a few times, just for the instrument playing, but it's really not that interesting. I get bored of it quickly. Check out some Liquid Tension Experiment if you like that sort of thing-it's much better with drums behind it.

Lord Abortion 03-27-2006 06:00 PM

I much prefer DT to LTE, because I'm one of those people who, if James LaBrie's voice took on an incarnate form, would attempt to have sex with it.

Riva 03-27-2006 06:01 PM

Hehe, my favourite moment in a record store was at the local HMV. The manager put on When The Tigers Broke Free, and I exclaimed, rather loudly, "Holy crap, it's Pink Floyd!" to my girlfriend. The manager came over and told me that I'd restored his faith in humanity. :)
omg new review of Chinese Democracy
Seriously, I hate Axl Rose, that review was probably true though.

All in all: GnR is boring.

Shattered_Future 03-27-2006 06:03 PM

I do like LTE and DT to extents (the latter more), but I'm really liking this for some reason. It's heavily piano based, and the piano is completely jaw dropping.

GNR I could care less about. Decent at best.

Lord Abortion 03-27-2006 06:04 PM

Mine will be the time when Someone comes up to me in the metal section and says "You look like you belong here, tell me what to get!"

I live for that day to come.

I quite like GNR, but mostly in short bursts. I learnt to play Welcome To The Jungle ages ago, but I can't remember it now. :(

I like that better.

I will probably buy Chinese Democracy when it surfaces...I'm interested more than anything, really.

Hmm ok. I saw it.

I would just maybe post one of me...just maybe.

Heh, I think Riva's description is pretty accurate.

Pretty good list, man.

Most of my favourites made it, but lack of Fenriz makes me a sad panda.

Silenius 03-27-2006 06:36 PM

Fenriz's drumming on Darkthrone isn't that impressive and I havn't heard his other stuff. He just days blast beats or the basic rock beat all the way through songs. Fills... yes... what fills?

i am the robots 03-27-2006 06:38 PM

Question for mods: would this be an informal paragraph review or a full review?

At the time, Darkest Hour was:
John Henry - Vocals
Mike Schleibaum - Guitar
Fred Ziomek - Guitar
Billups Allen - Bass
Ryan Parrish - Drums

Darkest Hour's second full-length album So Sedated, So Secure was released March of 2001. The album is very reminiscent of At The Gates' Slaughter of the Soul though more thrashy. Oftentimes Darkest Hour has been called metalcore, however they have no elements in common with any hardcore band I've ever heard, and few in common with the trash that people throw around as metalcore these days.

With that said, onto the review.

So Sedated, So Secure is quite possibly one of the greatest albums I've heard in my life. From the first moments of An Epitaph you know it's something special. Throughout the album we have a nice balance of brutality and melody, and quite fantastic vocals from John Henry, also, Billups Allen's bass playing is more prominent than that of other bands in their genre. Throughout the album there are indeed breakdowns, but the chugging ones are a more intellegent, 4-5 second section that leave's you saying, "that was a nice touch," and the longer breakdowns are more along the lines of melodic sections that are slowed down much like In Flames' Episode 666.

Highlights:
An Epitath (3:45)
So Sedated, So Secure (4:09)
The Hallow (3:28)
No Closer Than A Stranger (4:53)
The Last Dance Massacre (8:37)

Also, I've submitted it as an informal paragraph, and it won't show up at all.

EDIT: It's showing up now.

Agreed.

It's one of these lists I've been actually happy with

Bugger me.
Anyone who has Kill by Cannibal Corpse, listen to Five nails through the neck at 1:40.
That's the kind of thing that makes me both drop my jaw and wish feverently I could do that.
