My friend can do it, he's ripped and burnt a couple for me but I don't know how the hell he does it.

Oh, it's cos I have Rock in Rio on DVD, and I wanna try and get it on my MP3 without having to buy the CD

I'll ask him but I doubt he'll know. I think the ability to rip DVDs comes with the computer.
