Is the Pompeii one actually live or studio cuts over the top? Because theres no actual audience is there?
I'm pretty sure it's live. If not, Nick Mason must play exactly the same fills every time, which I doubt in his early days. There's quite some improvisation going on on the DVD, which is hard to overdub I think. This improvisation is something I miss in later day Pink Floyd. I loved the jamming they used to do before they got real famous and all.

I showed a bit from LAP in my Esthetics-class last year, when we were talking about camera stances and filming methods. There's some original filming on LAP, I think, even when you don't look at the fact that the concept itself is already highly original.

Kingofdudes 10-24-2006 02:07 PM

It is live, though they had a LOT of control over the recording and production.

AnyColour74 10-24-2006 04:07 PM

the wall is something that you have to adjust to. to a lot of people, it seems watered down with depression at first listen. but give it time. it will grow on you

MattSharpIsCool 10-24-2006 08:15 PM

The interviews and "Echoes" were the best parts of LAP.

The camera work is also really cool.

rippa32 10-24-2006 08:38 PM

I think I may have seen clips on RAGE, (sorta like VH1 and MTV to you americans). Are they standing in some ruins sorta in the middle of nowhere?

MattSharpIsCool 10-24-2006 08:46 PM

Yes.

They're in Pompeii, a city in Italy south of Rome.

Ever heard of Mount Vesuvius? The giant volcano? It erupted a long time ago and wiped Pompeii off the face of the earth. Eventually people found it and dug it up.

Pink Floyd is playing in the coliseum where they used to have Gladiator games.

magicbus 10-24-2006 08:49 PM

It makes everything that much more epic. What an awesome idea.

Dr. Jake Destructo 10-25-2006 12:29 AM

Damn I need Pulse. I can't say I was incredibly impressed by Live in Pompeii, but maybe I should just watch it more.

MattSharpIsCool 10-25-2006 12:58 AM

It's almost more an actual film than a concert movie.

But if you want a concert film, Pulse is the way to go. They play Dark Side of the Moon in full, plus a very good collection of other songs.

Only downside is no Roger. The guy playing bass for that concert is kind of goofy. He's good, but he just seems goofy.

Kingofdudes 10-25-2006 01:01 AM

I like what Guy Pratt does with a lot of the bass parts. The only song that suffers without Roger in my eyes is ABitW pt.2

MattSharpIsCool 10-25-2006 01:08 AM

He's a good bass player, dont get me wrong. He funks up a lot of the bass parts to make them a little more interesting. But then again, Roger does that when he plays live, also.

I think any song off of The Wall especially suffers without Roger on stage. The Wall was his album, so its tough to play it without him.

Kingofdudes 10-25-2006 01:12 AM

True, I love everything about Comfortably Numb on Pulse except for what they do with the Roger's parts.

His basses are goofy too. I cringe when he pulls out that headless one.

Alright. My review for The Final Cut is done.

Check it out :smoke:

Apocalyptic Raids 10-25-2006 03:18 AM

Cool, I'll check it out.

Auberge le Mouton Noir 10-25-2006 05:19 AM

Live at Pompeii was the best thing Pink Floyd ever did.

eat CONTROVERSY, guys

Oh crap I really should have remembered that lol. And I used to do ancient history and covered this in detail. I knew Pompeii was significant. :p

Ugh, I know what ya mean. Gilmour messed around with a headless guitar during his solo stuff in the 80's. Such an ugly instrument. Not nearly as ugly as mullet saxophone boy that tries to play guitar in the Learning to Fly music video though.

robo2448 10-25-2006 09:19 PM

mullet man!

Guy Pratt is a much better bassist than Roger. But Pulse definitely misses Roger too.

ghettoeddo 10-25-2006 09:20 PM

where can i find this live at pompeii?

Nice review. I have The Final Cut on my computer, and its slowly growing on me. At first I didnt really like it at all. I still think its too lyrics-based, but I'm starting to like it more.

That review does come off as a bit negative though. Did you like the album?
where can i find this live at pompeii?
I'd imagine anywhere. I got mine at Best Buy.

Danger Bird 10-25-2006 11:27 PM

Check your local library. Mine has all sorts of sweet DVDs, including The Wall, Live at Pompeii, Pulse, and Live 8.

rippa32 10-26-2006 12:09 AM

Mine doesnt:mad: However I got my ticket to Waters, Im so excited.

MattSharpIsCool 10-26-2006 01:29 AM

You lucky bastard.

He was in Seattle a few weeks ago. Its only about 4 hours north of where I live, but I dont drive. So, I couldnt go. I would have loved to though.

Gilmour was in Seattle a few months ago, too. Same story :upset:

Kingofdudes 10-26-2006 01:31 AM

Both of them skipped most of the south, so driving wasnt even an option for me :upset:
Mine doesnt:mad: However I got my ticket to Waters, Im so excited.
I got mine yesterday. :D:D

What kind did you get?

rippa32 10-26-2006 03:48 AM

Silver, Im not willing to pay $200 for a concert. And bronze looked overly crappy.

Jim 10-26-2006 04:36 AM

Gold all the way. It was actually cheaper than I thought. My friends were talking of some "backstage tickets" that were going for $350 but that sounded a bit rubbish =/

Would be pretty shweet but

I was just trying to be as unbiased as possible, because while I love it, it definitely was a little flawed. Notice I gave it a personal score of 4.5? :P

I hope I encourage people to check it out for themselves regardless of the bad rep it has. I did and I haven't regretted it. :)

rippa32 10-26-2006 06:51 AM

Speaking of The Final Cut it would be interesting if Waters plays some of it on his tour.

dUSK 10-26-2006 06:55 AM

I checked it out briefly towards the end of last year, and didn't think much of it. Might have to re-obtain it again at some point. That being said, I never really liked anything post-The Wall that I've heard.

I suppose I really only listen to 6 PF albums though, which is enough for me to get my fix.

rippa32 10-26-2006 06:58 AM

So what seats did you get? If silver ill probably be right near you.

dUSK 10-26-2006 07:07 AM

Silver. Section 45A, so I'll be looking diagonally at the stage.

Riva 10-26-2006 07:16 AM

Dammit, I missed out on the pre-sale, because of this bloody flu I have.

rippa32 10-26-2006 07:19 AM
Silver. Section 45A, so I'll be looking diagonally at the stage.
Ah ok im section 30. Ill be looking straight but ill be further back.

dUSK 10-26-2006 07:29 AM

Ah you're in the lower circle though, which is a bonus considering you will be at the other end of the venue. It's going to be a great show.

Riva 10-26-2006 07:30 AM

Making me jealous, Greg. I hope I can get in on the public sale now... :(

dUSK 10-26-2006 07:31 AM

ITT: Riva realises he should listen to G Mac more. :p

Txus 10-26-2006 07:33 AM

Pink Floyd sucks anyway...so what are you guys talking about? :p

Apocalyptic Raids 10-26-2006 07:39 AM

Kill the heathen!

Txus 10-26-2006 07:43 AM

http://www.last.fm/user/TxusMx/
