well, it differs depending on who you would ask. I tend to agree with KRS-1, since he basically named it, and was intricate in creating it as a genre, as well as a culture/lifestyle

examples of hip hop : Jurassic 5, De La Soul

rap is more agressive, and would encompass artists like Eminem and Nas

edit : subjectivity really should have nothing do with a definition

kurrpt 05-04-2007 09:37 AM

how many times are you going to say "what" on one fukking page?

i can't believe you're a mod most of the time

Sepstrup 05-04-2007 09:37 AM

So Jurassic 5 isn't rap music?

ATM 05-04-2007 09:38 AM

Krups, you have no idea what you are talking about.

kurrpt 05-04-2007 09:39 AM

I could easily say the same thing about you

Sepstrup 05-04-2007 09:40 AM

But that would be wrong.

kurrpt 05-04-2007 09:40 AM

you're hopeless

kurrpt 05-04-2007 09:42 AM

hip hop is a culture movement
Hip hop is a cultural movement that began among urban African Americans in New York City in the early 1970s, and has since spread around the world. Some consider beatboxing the fifth element of hip hop; others might add political activism, hip hop fashion, hip hop slang, double dutching (an urban form of rope skipping) or other elements as important facets of hip hop. The term has since come to be a synonym for hip hop music and rap to mainstream audiences. ...
kurrpt 05-04-2007 09:47 AM

rap is like part of the whole. Hip hop is "all inclusive"

i think that's the most simplified answer I can give ya

kurrpt 05-04-2007 09:50 AM

thats like saying black metal and hardcore are the same thing. To people that know the differences, its a whole world of difference to them. To outsiders who aren't aware, they see it as synonymous with all types of metal.

thats essentially what you're doing

kurrpt 05-04-2007 09:53 AM

alright, your turn to try to explain how they are one in the same

LapraS 05-04-2007 09:59 AM

I'd like to add that Hip Hop Music and Rap Music are the same thing. Though, Rap AKA emceeing ( MC'ing) in itself is a subgenre of Hip Hop, the culture.

LapraS 05-04-2007 10:00 AM

I'm not introducing new information.

LapraS 05-04-2007 10:04 AM

Yes, 50Cent makes Hip Pop. Also, in multiple interviews 2Pac admits to perform "Rap". But I like to classify his music as Hip Hop.

Sepstrup 05-04-2007 10:06 AM

So basically, you're full of bs

LapraS 05-04-2007 10:06 AM

What's so contradicting?

Sepstrup, that was addressed to me?

LapraS 05-04-2007 10:08 AM

I give preference to the term Hip Hop.

Sepstrup 05-04-2007 10:08 AM

Also:
What's funny about someone not being able to distinguish two music genres?

I'd like to add that Hip Hop Music and Rap Music are the same thing.
So yeah. Bs.

LapraS 05-04-2007 10:11 AM

No, point of discussion was, is Hip Hop the same as Rap, which is untrue, for Rap is a subgenre of the cultural movement; Hip Hop.
As I said, Hip Hop consists of Rap ( MC'ing), graffiti, DJ'ing etc.

LapraS 05-04-2007 10:14 AM

No, my position is still the same.

There are four fundamental elements in Hip Hop:

* Hip hop dance: Breakdance and various forms of street dance
* Hip hop art: Urban inspired art, often as graffiti
* Hip hop music: DJing, beats and beatmaking, and hip hop production
* Rapping: MCing and urban inspired poetry

LapraS 05-04-2007 10:19 AM

I do. Bah, this Rap or Hip Hop conversation is over. *Turns on Notorious BIG- Juicy*

LapraS 05-04-2007 10:23 AM

Rap is a part of Hip Hop, okay? I've made that clear like a million times. I've not changed my opinions at all. RAP is not the SAME as Hip Hop..get it? Jeez, get over it.

LapraS 05-04-2007 10:26 AM
Because rap and hip hop are the same thing.
No, it's not, like you acknowlegded yourself.

Sepstrup 05-04-2007 10:38 AM
Rap is a part of Hip Hop, okay? I've made that clear like a million times. I've not changed my opinions at all. RAP is not the SAME as Hip Hop..get it? Jeez, get over it.
Umm... read the last few pages again. You said Spat was confusing two music genres, then you said rap and hiphop music are the same thing.

LapraS 05-04-2007 10:39 AM

Emphasis on 'music'.

Sepstrup 05-04-2007 10:41 AM

So he wasn't confusing two music genres as you said?

LapraS 05-04-2007 10:45 AM

No, he wasn't. He was confusing terminology.

Sepstrup 05-04-2007 10:56 AM

So why did you write:
What's funny about someone not being able to distinguish two music genres?
LapraS 05-04-2007 11:00 AM

Because I made a mistake?

Rams 05-04-2007 11:16 AM

But you met the Wu-Tang Clan

LapraS 05-04-2007 11:19 AM

I did, yes.

Rams 05-04-2007 11:22 AM

Wu-Tang Clan haven't been relevant for close to 15 years now. It's basically two outside members, Ghostface and Masta, who are carrying their name on.
Yeah, I checked out those tracks on Myspace. Really fantastic production. That's the only thing I was worried about. Pharoaheeee
About 80% of the album is out. I'm upset it doesn't seem "Got You" will be on it.

LapraS 05-04-2007 11:33 AM

I've been to a concert, and RZA welcomed me to the stage.
And The Wu was released 7 years ago, so what are you talking about?

LapraS 05-04-2007 11:37 AM

No, once.

LapraS 05-04-2007 12:20 PM

You're disturbing.

LapraS 05-04-2007 12:29 PM

You possess Oink invites?

Sepstrup 05-04-2007 12:33 PM

Let's discuss the new Pharoahe Monch instead. I want the new album even though he cancelled his concert at Roskilde last year :( (I saw Why? instead, which was also awesome)

Kyle 05-04-2007 12:53 PM

Pharcyde is good.

I only know 1-2 Pharoah songs and they were kinda funny.

"Put your hands, up in the air and then spread them"...was that him?

ALSO - Rap, Hip Hop and Jazz Fusion are all the same thing.

Eliminator 05-04-2007 12:57 PM

jazz fusion what
