What's some hardcore or metal that has tasteful and well done solos?
I don't know how you'd define "tasteful," necessarily, but I've personally found that melodeath is a breeding ground for wicked lead lines and gorgeous solo work. Anything ever written by Kalmah (except perhaps "Moon of my Nights") will suffice, as may anything on either of Mors Principium Est's first two discs. Insomnium doesn't use a great deal of solo work, but when they do it's usually quite haunting. Imperanon has some terrific stuff as well. Depending on how far you're willing to stretch your definition of "metal," you might want to consider Kamelot, Redemption and Riverside. Oh my God, does Riverside have some gorgeous guitar work. But those last two are far more progressive rock than true metal. |

Different musical tastes are hilarious
I was actually gonna suggest Kalmah as they do have some pretty sweet solos but I figured it's a little shreddier than he wanted |

I can't believe I forgot to list Ikuinen Kaamos' "The Absence," from their Closure EP. You can download it free from their Myspace page, and in addition to being an amazing song, it ends with a mesmerizing 2:05 guitar solo. I put it on A-B repeat today and listened to it for over 40 minutes on end.
lol
Insightful. I think we all learned a lot from this. |
Rec me some metal that gives you chills!
|
Akitsa - La grande infamie
|
Sorry, i mean chills from its epic-ness, not its scary-ness... if that even makes sense.
Kinda like when i hear misery signals and cream my pants! |

Carach Angren - Death Came Through a Phantom Ship Darkspace - Darkspace III Apocalyptica - Inquisition Symphony, "Coma" Dark Tranquillity - We Are the Void, "Arkhangelsk" Dead Soul Tribe - A Lullaby For the Devil, "Stairway to Nowhere" Epica - Design Your Universe, "Tides of Time" Ikuinen Kaamos - Closure Opeth - Blackwater Park; Damnation The list goes on and on and on. Music isn't about sound, it's about feeling—about an experience.
Sorry, i mean chills from its epic-ness, not its scary-ness... if that even makes sense.
Most of this list still qualifies, particularly the latter half. |
defs about experience, after the burial may be some of the most talented musicians out there, but their music has no foundation or emotion to it at all... its kinda like they're just showing off

seriously?? |
Toss up. Two bands tie, but each is supremely different from the other. They top the list for different reasons:
Insomnium, and here's why: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9QCK6l6gKg Kalisia: Their home page can be found at www.kalisia.com. Check their samples at their Myspace. Good luck finding a stream for Cybion anywhere online. |
seriously??
with dreams to be a king, first one shalt be a man! |
Insomnium is ****ing sick, thanks man

Dude, they are hands-down the most emotive and beautiful metal band the world has ever known. The folk influences in their music are second to none, and their guitar leads haunt my dreams. If you could bottle "Mortal Share," I would bathe in it. Other songs to check out: Medeia The Elder Daughter of the Moon Bereavement Mortal Share Last Statement Against the Stream Weighed Down With Sorrow Too many songs to bother with links, sorry. They're all on Youtube, though. |
MANOWAR! everyone loves Manowar, they just don't know it yet.
|
Some elite country like Townes Van Zandt please.
|
I am in need of some more dubstep/trip-hop
I haven't found a way/blog that really keeps me up to date on anything new that comes out so recs are always welcome. For albums and blogs that is. Thanks. |
There have been so many dubstep / triphop recommendations in this thread do a little search maybe it'll be sufficient. For the latest stuff I don't know any new albums. But for dubstep check Joy Orbison out. He doesn't have a full length but he has an ep with 2 songs called Hyph Mngo / Wet Look. For trip hop check Gus Gus - Polydistortion.

Billy Bragg & Wilco - Mermaid Avenue Steve Earle - Train A Comin' Old Crow Medicine Show - Big Iron World Two Gallants - The Throes 16 Horsepower - Secret South, Sackcloth 'n' Ashes or Low Estate Jay Munly - Munly & the Lee Lewis Harlots The Avett Brothers - Mignonette |
I could use some more non-obtrusive ambient music
