On another note, I also tried Vault crashes and Artisan rides. I wasn't actually overly impressed with either. I don't overly like the Artisan ride's sound, but I guess I could try a few, I imagine there's quite a bit of difference model to model... and the Vault crashes are *way* too crisp for me. They have such a narrow range. Instead of the "PSSHHHH" I like in a crash, like an A Thin/Medium Thin or A Custom for instance, they sound a lot more like "TSSSS". I imagine they cut like a knife though. The K crashes I spent time playing today though... those were amazing. Such a dark, gritty cut. Reminds me of HHX but darker, and more bite, and I'm a huge HHX fan.

Plan B. 11-02-2005 09:03 PM

It's because the Vaults have silver in them.

boss 11-02-2005 10:32 PM

And HHX's look cool too

Speaking of which, how's the effects pack (10 splash and 18 china)?
Or am i wasting my time since all HHX's rule?

playwithfire 11-03-2005 12:30 AM
It's because the Vaults have silver in them.
All pro Zildjian and Sabian cymbals have silver in them...B20 bronze is 80% copper, 20% tin, and traces of silver. Sabian just markets that you can "hear" the silver more in the Vault cymbals.

Plan B. 11-03-2005 12:34 AM

playwithfire 11-03-2005 10:19 AM

^Agreed. I think it's a weird thing to market, but silvery is a cymbal term, and it does fit well with the Vaults description. Describing something as silvery and saying "You can hear the silver in it man!" sound completely different... one of which sounds retarded.

Rite, I need abit of advice.

In 3 weeks, i am going to Wembley Drum Center, and am plaing to getting these cymbals:
Zildjian
15'' New Beat Hats
18'' A Custom Crash
19'' A Custom Crash
Sabian
21'' HH Raw-bell Dry Ride
UFIP
18'' Tigar China*

Now, i need a second option on a ride, just incase Wembley dosn't have it. So are 22'' A Custom rides any good(Im playing a gig 2 days after i go, so i will need to come away with a ride)? If it helps im after a ride that has little or no wash, with a strong ping, and a nice bell.
*This is already on order, and will come in about 2/3 weeks

Tim 11-03-2005 03:41 PM

if they dont have the HHraw bell id say have them order it and if not get a A ping ride
or AA rock ride. just my opinion though. if they dont have it though id really see if they could order it.

Yer there is that, but they wont order it until after xmas though, and i need a ride for the gig (i can't play on my ZBT ride).

playwithfire 11-03-2005 04:45 PM

Personally I hate A Custom rides. The crashes and spashes are fantastic, the hats are good, the chinas are fine, but the rides... they just all suck imo. They are way too shimmery for my taste, have a good amount of buildup in most cases, and their ping is distinctly different from the ping of an A or K for instance... even the ping shimmers.

Funky_Drummer 11-03-2005 05:08 PM

Hello everyone. I'm new to the forums and I thought I'd make my first post here. Intil I can make a thread. I've been playing for about a year with pretty old cymbals. (Can't even read the brand, heh:lol: ) And been thinking of getting new cymbals, as soon as I save up. I don't know much 'bout cymbals so I need your help. I like playing mostly rock and punk music and a bit of metal. I'm looking for cymbals with Medium-fast decay and last pretty long. Um...and at a good price. Help, please!

playwithfire 11-03-2005 06:32 PM

All pro cymbals should last a long time, so that shouldn't be a factor. Personally, I would look into Medium Thin weight A Zildjians and Sabian AAs for crashes, same series for hihats and ride, but probably medium heavy or heavy for the ride, and medium over heavy for the hats.

A nice setup would be something like... 14" A New Beats/Mastersounds, 17" A Medium crash, 18" A Medium Thin crash, 21" A Rock ride.

boss 11-04-2005 09:51 PM

classic rock: 18" AAX Studio or HHX Studio?

already in my setup:
13" HHX grove hats
14" AAX Studio crash
16" HHX Stage crash
20" AAX Stage crash
21" HH raw bell dry ride
12" AAX Splash
12" 14" 16" 18" Wuhan china

I've already asked this before but now its narrowed down to these 2

bobby__johnny 11-04-2005 10:37 PM

HHX for sure you already have the big AAX Crash. HHX hands down

I don't know how long you've been playing but a couple of weeks ago I was at the same stage but you need to realize that most of the cymbals beauty comes after the initial hit so overtones are extremely important. If you want a cymbal with lots of Ping and little overtones go with the Z customs. I'd get an A Ping Ride, I have it it has a good ping dry bell with great overtones

DruMMeR_BoY14 11-06-2005 06:37 AM

The A Ping has a great wash of overtones, I quite like them.

I played a gig last weekend and let the drummer in another band use my set. Hearing it from 10 metres away with guitars and bass as well, now thats a different story, almost all of the overtones were gone, only the stick definition could be heard.

If youa re concerend with what he crowd hears, its a good ride, if you are concerned with what your own ears are going ot be heraing, try perhaps an A rock ride or some form of Dry ride. Dunno about an Earth ride, I've heard that the overtones can be huge on them if you let them build up for long enough.

Z Customs, I'd reccomend against them unless youare 100% certain that its the sound you are after, or else you'll end up a ride only suited for one purpose, to be loud and heavy. So don't decide to start playing jazz after 2 weeks of getting one :)

samsamthegiantman 11-06-2005 11:57 AM

I just got a drum set, and apparently it didn't come with a Ride Cymbal.

What's a good Ride Cymbal for a beginner?
I like to play jazz, latin, and rock. So, I'd also like it to have a good bell.

I appreciate it.

hahaha....your describing The Ed Shauggnessy Universal Ride right there!

I have been playing for 5 years :D And tend to know what sound i want.

And Z customs have simlairsound to UFIP Boinic's (i got reconmended them). But at the moment, i am 90% sure that if i can't get the 21'' HH Raw-bell Dry Ride, then im going to get 22'' A custom ride, and then just save again for the HH one.

Chris 11-07-2005 11:04 AM

Are 21'' A Rock Ride's any good?

I ask as i like the sound of the ride Kenny Aronoff used when he toured with the pumpkin's, and i think that is the ride he used.

Anyways to the cymbal choice, I dunno what Kenny Aronoff ride sounds like but the AA Rock ride is a decent ride, if you want plenty of ping with a cutting bright bell this is the ride for you, if you want to crash on it also look in to another ride.

Ummm no. Did you read what i put? I said when he toured with the pumpkin's. He never recoreded with them, so the sound you got on the tour is 90% what the real cymbal will sound like.

Murd_666 11-08-2005 06:29 AM

^oh sorry bout that, I kind of skimmed through, still that ride is still pretty nice^
anyways here's something to ponder
AAX Stage Set
or
AA Medium Set

VTDS_xx 11-08-2005 11:32 AM

I'm making my list of cymbals to upgrade to, that should last me a good time after I get them. I play Rock/Prog and want to make sure these are good choices:

14" AAX Stage Hats
21" AAX Stage Ride or 21" AA Medium Heavy Ride (in Trad. Finish)
18" AAX Bright Crash
16" AA Medium Thin Crash

Chinas and Splashes will be added later, I've got an 18" Wuhan China and 10" Wuhan S Series Splash right now, and they sound great so I'll probably add a 12" S Series Splash and a 14-16" China later.

These cymbals will compiment the 7 Piece Mapex M Kit I'll be getting at Christmas :D

playwithfire 11-08-2005 01:09 PM

The 18" AAX Bright crash is the worst crash I've ever played... oh man, I don't like it at all. It's just not one of the better AAX crashes. I say you're better off with an 18" AAX Stage, AA Medium Thin, or AA Medium.

Drum Phil 11-08-2005 01:10 PM

I like the stages and explosions in the AAX range as well as the bigger metal crashes

-TheGlassPrison- 11-08-2005 06:22 PM

Looking for something to compliment by 18" Vault.

bobby__johnny 11-08-2005 06:33 PM

18" AAX Stage
