Well I don't think you have to be talented to do it. Therefor it's a matter of opinion.
You'd be wrong then. I'd like to see you growl/scream as well as the most accomplished growlers/screamers. |
You'd be wrong then. I'd like to see you growl/scream as well as the most accomplished growlers/screamers.
Dude, let it go. You don't have to be all offended by it.

Settle down, the argument's been over for a bit. |
So yeah I checked the reveiw on here for 10,000 Days I don't think it did it much justice. I love the Lost Keys/ Rosetta Stoned combo and Right in Two.
|
The guitar riff is just so great.
I can't wait for this to be the next single, and what the clip will be like.
Really? I thought it was bland. tbh. It's my 2nd fav off 10,000 days, behind Vicarious |
Dude, let it go. You don't have to be all offended by it.
lol, i'm not. I don't listen to many screaming or growling bands, tbh, just a handful, but I can tell when they have talent. Point is, your logic is along the lines of someone saying they don't like the sound of a guitar, and that guitar playing requires no talent. anyways, new tool album rocks. |
Really? I thought it was bland. tbh.
I love it. tbh? What the hell does that mean? |
To be honest, how long have you been on the internet for? :p
The Pot is my 2nd favourite song on 10,000 Days, after the title track. |
Opeth are very talented, and Michael is excellent at both growling and clean vox. Unfortunately like a lot of people I just hate the style, growling to me is something cheesy black/death metal bands who wear way too much makeup do to sound hardcore. Opeth are an incredibly mature and talented band, the growling is completely out of place imho.
|
Anyways, I was wondering if anyone knows any bands that are Tool/APC like. {which don't scream}?
I gave you a big list last night. go back and look. |

Except Opeth have been using that style of vocals since before any "hardcore" bands ever got started :\ |
I have to say my favourite songs on this album so far after 15 listens(OMG thats prob 20 hrs of my life I've given to this album already - yikes!) has to be wings pt1 & pt2. Gets me going every time!!
Then again I cant help but keep singin to myself when im bored..."monkey killing monkey killing monkey". The funny looks I keep getting off people... |
Opeth's growling out of place? It fits the music so perfectly. It's not like cheesier growls of some black metal bands (not starting anything), the growls just seem to fill out the music more.
What am I meant to be looking for exactly?
Yes this is old I know, and somebody already informed you but if they didn't, his name isn't Maynard James Keenan it's James Herbert Keenan. |
Finally, somone who will agree with me. Hah.
Growling, as Mikael does it, which is deep and powerful and controlled, is the most extreme thing you can do with your voice. It fits the extreme parts of their music perfectly. Having a clean melody over every evil-sounding dissonant riff would sound extremely odd, not to mention pretty terrible in most cases. |
Opiate: Opiate
Undertow: Sober Aenima: Eulogy/H (tied, can't decide) Salival: Pu**** Lateralus: Lateralus 10,000 Days: The Pot (at the moment) |
my favourite song off 10000days is lipan conjuring
|
Undertow: Sober
Aenima: H. Salival: No Quarter Lateralus: The Patient 10,000 Days: Right In Two Pretty hard to do. Aenima and 10,000 Days are the one's I'm not really sure about. |

Black Metal growls cheesy? lawl @ you Everything Opeth does blends perfectly. /end
Opeth are very talented, and Michael is excellent at both growling and clean vox. I sure can't think of any. Growling isn't to make Death Metal sound "hardcore'. I have no idea where you get that. It's part of the sound. Black Metal wise- Yes some of the guys wore Corpse Paint. It isn't to seem "hardcore". Please... The growls & screams are a important part of BM. Can you picture BM with clear vocals only? Same with DM. I'm not going to argue BM & DM Vs *insert genre here* but the growls and screams are a central part. |
Wait how can you say everything Opeth does blends perfectly and then agree that Mikael's growling is out of place?

I didn't say that. I agreed their very talented. His growls aren't out of place. |
I can listen to Opeth, but the growls do get me, and yeah I don't admire them that much. I find much more emotion comes outwhen he is just singing clean, I could listen to theat stuff constantly, but when the growls come in it just puts me off. I can listen to Slayer and love Tom Araya's voice, or Arch Enemy and love Angela Gossow's/Johan Liiva's voice, but when it comes to progressive long songs, I find they are best suited to a more calming sort of atmospheric style. Which is why I love Tool.

Tell me the growls don't add to Bleak or Harvest? |
To me they don't. I'm sorry.

Opiate - GLE
Undertow - 4 Degrees Ænima - 46&2 or Eulogy Lateralus - Lateralus+Disposition+Reflection (They all segue into each other, so I can get away with this) 10,000 Days - Rosetta Stoned |
Opiate- "Opiate"
Undertow-"Prison Sex" Ænima- "Eulogy" Lateralus- "The Grudge" 10,000 Days- "Vicarious" |
Tell me the growls don't add to Bleak or Harvest?
What I love about Opeth is when there is singing it is that much more powerful, since it isn't expected all the time. |

I have tried to get into it by listening to some of the more unique growling bands, such as Meshuggah, but I just can't take it seriously. To me it sounds ridiculous. And thats my major gripe about its place in Opeth. They are a mature, talented and accomplished band (just listen to Damnation), its completely unnecessary and out of place. Obviously someone who enjoys the harder stuff will see growling as a welcome addition. Im just not one of them. |

I don't like growling much too, but it grew on me when i started to listen to Opeth. It fits perfectly and as well as others, who already answered, posted, i couldn't imagine the music without it. |

I never used to like growling either until about a year ago, it's a shame though, you're missing out on some amazng bands. |

So Maynard's screaming is pretty cool in Ticks and Leeches. What do you guys reckon Mikael would do to that song if they covered it? NP: Ticks and leeches. |

i've never heard Maynard sing it live. I have the impression the screaming would have a totally different feel to it |
