Broken Arrow 03-21-2005 04:49 PM

I went with Steve.

B0nz0 03-21-2005 04:49 PM
He use to play for Megadeth.

No, he is technically the worst guitarist on the list, and there are songwriters of that list that are almost/as good as Townshend; Stephen Stills for example.
i did recognize that technique he is the worst, however i said in terms of both song writing and influence he is unmatched there. for instance, stills can write probably as well as him, but stills does not have ANYWHERE NEAR the influence he does. also page has had just as big if not bigger an influence than townshend, but page is not nearly as good a songwriter. i love his work but he's not as good as townshend...

pigonthewing82 03-21-2005 04:50 PM
Pete Townshend is the least talented player out of them all.
Yeah but he deserves more then zero.

B0nz0 03-21-2005 05:14 PM
Yeah but he deserves more then zero.
as does robert randolph

slowhand 03-21-2005 06:22 PM

The only thing Townsend is good at is at rhythm guitar (guitar-wise). I never liked him.

I agree with this statement.

So, the John Butler Trio is awesome. Not classic rock, but I think most of you would enjoy them.

thickasabrick 03-21-2005 06:51 PM
as does robert randolph
Dancin' Man voted for Robert Randolph! There's still some justice in this world. :thumb:

I, on the other hand...feel kinda bad for voting for Page, since I knew he would probably win anyways.

Broken Arrow 03-21-2005 06:55 PM

Stills needs more votes pronto.

fernandes_telecaster 03-21-2005 06:57 PM

Sorry to change the subject, but...

The other night I watched "A Concert for George" on PBS (Thank God that at least one TV station has some taste in music), and it was all George Harrison's songs being played by his friends. Eric Clapton put the whole thing together, and they had Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr on the same stage for the first time in thirty years (it was recorded one year after George's death - 11/29/02), and on top of that they had Danny Harrison (George's kid - who kicks serious *** on the guitar) playing with them.

I about came in my pants. It was wonderful.

thickasabrick 03-21-2005 07:11 PM

Ya I've been watching PBS quite often lately. I didn't even realize I got that channel up until a few months ago. They always have good music on that channel.

I watched Claptons Crossroads Festival, Sounds of the 60's, and A Concert for George in the past week or so.

Distant Echoes 03-21-2005 07:14 PM

My friends always talk about the crossroads festival, and my dad wouldnt shut up about how great the George Concert was. He said he wouldve bought it, but it cost like, $200.

I really want to get the crossroads festival and live-aid. But when im flicking through and i even see them jazz/blues guitarist, their frikkin awsome. their about 15 minutes sessions with the guitarist going at it the whole time. It really is awsome

Gees when is all this stuff on? The only thing I've ever seen on PBS was a Phish concert.:(

You just gotta keep your eyes open. I never know when the concerts are on, but if I'm flipping through the channels it usually catches my eye. Everytime you turn on your TV, pay a visit to PBS once or twice.

MalcolmYoungRock 03-21-2005 07:23 PM

Yea, I know how do you get all these good shows on PBS.

I get teletubbies..:(

jpj 03-21-2005 07:39 PM

I saw Trey Anastasio, part of The Grateful Dead Movie, and The 60's Experience on PBS. Wilco is gonna be on this Saturday.

Does anyone know the name of that book about the acid tests? I think Badmoon and Schyma were talking about it.

Dead thread :(

NP: The Grateful Dead-Dark Star

Distant Echoes 03-21-2005 08:24 PM

how many times must i save this thread?

Dark Star's a good song. Ive never heard it studio, but ive heard it live during an innovative session. Comes in around 23:30 minutes. Doesnt lose my attention for one second either

if ur in the eastern time zone (i am too) the concerts are generally on very late. like around midnight

jpj 03-21-2005 08:26 PM

Are you talking about the version on Live/Dead? That's the version I was listening too, but I decided to skip ahead to St. Stephen.

EDIT: To Distant Echoes

Badmoon 03-21-2005 08:30 PM
Does anyone know the name of that book about the acid tests? I think Badmoon and Schyma were talking about it.
Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe.

I Am Jimmy Page has read it, I think.

P.S. "Dark Star" has never been recorded by the Grateful Dead.

Ok, thanks :thumb:

There's a version of Dark Star on Live/Dead that says (Studio) next to it.

Seafroggys 03-21-2005 08:31 PM

I didn't see the whole 60s Experience. But Procul Harum's performance of Whiter Shade of Pale was ****ing awesome. That in itself made the whole thing worth seeing. Such a phenomenal, beautiful song.

Steppenwolfe was pretty badass too.

lunch998 03-21-2005 08:34 PM

Speaking of Procol Harum, my Dad got a Dvd of them playing at the Beat Club or something. B.J. Wilson owns on Power Failure, he's a really overlooked drummer.

Jam2Me 03-21-2005 09:08 PM

Anyone listen to 60's/70's pop? Some of that stuff was trippy..I think the harmonies were really trippy.

Would that be stuff like The Mamas and The Papas? Well, I don't think I do.

First thing that comes to mind when I think of harmonies are The Beach Boys. None could match their vocal harmonies, IMO.

hey, in regards to the buckethead conversation, i think he will influence plenty of people if they get past his bucket. i kind of see him as a jeff beck, more creative, technical, and versatile than others who get much more credit.

i got a few free cds from work today.

north mississippi all stars - hill country revue
the animals - retrospective
nick cave & the bad seeds - abattoir blues
leonard cohen - dear heather
the mars volta - frances the mute
the zutons - who killed...
keb mo - peace...back by popular demand
pat metheny - select recordings

i think i made out pretty well!

Do you work at some sort of music store? That'd be awesome to get free CD's.

At my work I get free guitars, amps, picks, and strings. Although the music store that sponsors us sucks...they don't have any of the guitars or amps I want, and aren't willing to order them. (They mostly just deal with Peavey, which I'm not a big fan of)

it was quite good. very very interesting and wolfe, as usual, provides great insight into whatever he writes about.

and im really digging the north mississippi allstars, henceforth called nma as i dont want to type all that out. they rock hard. theyre considered a jam band right? very energetic. i like.

and great job on the fg.

Jogga 03-22-2005 05:22 AM

I doubt many of you would have heard of the band Wolmother. These guys are a 3 peice aussie band that are gettin pretty big. U can listen to their music at their site, www.wolfmother.com

Yea, they are a Jam Band. And they're also usually really good, but they change up their style occasionally; Sometimes for the worst.

Thanks :)

Yeah, This weekend I saw The Mammas and the Papas, Concert for George, Crossroads and some Grateful Dead thing. I just hate all the people that come on and beg for money for like a half hour right in the middle

IAJP 03-22-2005 09:13 AM

I, personally, didn't really like "A Concert For George",
I mean, it was ok, don't get me wrong, I just thought the whole affair was a little overblown.

B0nz0 03-22-2005 09:51 AM

i liked it

IAJP 03-22-2005 09:56 AM

The concert was decent, the whole publicity over here was silly though, everywhere you turned there's a purple picture of Harrison "Concert For George"...
