If you think giving them money is a good idea then you really are an idiot. Giving people a large sum of money who don't normally have a lot of money will largely waste it I guarantee you.

EDIT: your view is obviously very simplistic.

flesh 07-06-2009 11:59 AM

It still is right. African Americans are confined into ghettos for the most part where the youth have little hope/opportunity and tons of barriers. It doesn't help that the schools they attend are pretty much nothing but day care centers. All these problems stem from slavery and its never too late to fix things instead of just looking the other way.

RetiredAt21 07-06-2009 12:01 PM

I never said we should look the other way.

boundbytransience 07-06-2009 12:58 PM

I think it's even more racist to shell out money to african americans. Like the notion is made out of pity; oh, your ancestors suffered hundreds of years-- take this money and shut up.

Reverse racism doesn't solve shiiiiiiiit.

I didn't really expect white people to comprehend this subject matter.

whiteminority 07-06-2009 03:35 PM

Man, Martin I used to be one of five white kids on a bus of 70 and I'm telling you while yes, there are many barriers to overcoming the ghetto, I've personally seen many situations where kids were given a chance and it was blown, however, I've seen people make something out of that chance, but regardless reparations as commonly viewed by mainstream society is ****ed. I believe that with forward thinking and the proper funding towards education that this problem can be solved without blindly handing out money.

if you ever use the term 'reverse racism' seriously, you're an idiot. nobody wants to just send black people a check, that's stupid and a bit patronizing (agreeing with whoever said that even though I think it was reverse racism guy).

affirmative action is a realistic tool that I think she be utilized to attempt to shrink the socio-economic racial gap. I prefer more "soft" tools of reparation like affirmative action than "hard" incentives like money, or whatever. i would still support any kind of reparations though, justin, i think you're missing the forest for the trees when you say 'well i didnt enslave anyone.' The gap is there, the problem exists, and something must be done about it. Though monetary reparations is definitely not the best idea imo, you can't ignorantly dismiss the issue because you aren't to blame.

Affirmative action is worse than money because you can earn money back you can't get college, schooling, or your job back

you have to go to a new one you didnt want first
Affirmative action is worse than money because you can earn money back you can't get college, schooling, or your job back
"DER TOOK DER JAWBS" - McP

The 2000 census found 1.3 million unemployed blacks and 112 million employed whites. If we some how managed to get every single unemployed black to take the job of a white (unlikely considering that the unemployed blacks aren't necessarily qualified for the jobs), only about 1% of whites would be affected.

Affirmative action shouldn't be quota based. In some cases it's a few points added to a test or on those check sheets for college admissions, but even that is oversimplified. When the choice comes down to candidates of fairly equal qualification, the minority should be chosen. This is the least we could do right now.
My name is Mike, not 'reverse racism guy'.

k

Just know that you can't expect to have a colorblind society by following colorblind policies - as long as there is a significant and unaddressed wealth gap, race will play a factor.
For people who are pro-reparations: what should be do with white ghettos, or ghettos of other nationalities?
This will open up a rabbit hole deeper than what should be discussed in a single community thread. I'll just leave it at this: the poor cannot be ignored, regardless of race.

Replace capitalism. Until then special consideration should be given to minorities, in this case African-Americans. Not to say 'white ghettos are of their own doing!' because that isn't true either, but whites definitely didn't have to go through slavery followed by the bad end of a century of apartheid. Denying that the last few hundred years of history has had an impact on the quality of life for African-Americans is ludicrous, and such positions would probably only be espoused by people who once used crack.

Well most of them are illegals anyways so they definitely shouldn't be allowed to take advantage of programs and whatnot that are for Americans.

flesh 07-07-2009 09:48 AM

The term "reverse discrimination" is pretty moronic. As far as affirmative action goes, all those minority groups have a history of being oppressed and because of that white males are ahead on the playing field. Why not make things fair? People really over react to it and need to calm down.

RetiredAt21 07-07-2009 10:13 AM

Who even brought up reverse racism in the first place? I know it wasn't me.

I couldn't even sit through that whole movie. I was blazed, too so it must've really sucked.

cobert 07-08-2009 12:27 PM

That movie was hilarious.

Like The Big Lebowski, I can't tell if it's a straight up screwball comedy or a surprisingly deep satire. The last few scenes, with Osborne Cox giving the brief monologue where he says "you represent the idiocy of today" and the last couple of lines, with the bigwig CIA guy saying "What did we learn from all of it?" and the other guy responding "I just don't know" make me think that the Coens are trying to say something with it. There are clearly some themes that run through the movie - almost every character is deceptive (except perhaps the gym owner who just can't man up to talk to Linda - even though he is on the butt end of the 'idiocy of today' speech), one half of the cast seems concerned with the mind and heart while the rest are concerned with their bodies, and almost every single character in the movie is a moron.

4/5

Iluvatar 07-08-2009 12:33 PM

pretty sure the movie is saying ****tards pervade every part of society.

it was good, could have had more laughs

cobert 07-08-2009 12:48 PM

That's the best I could come up with, but I'm not sure I'm satisfied with that. It's definitely saying at least that though. I mean, the directors of the CIA are shown to be just as inept as the personal trainers.
