I view them as interludes of the Album. Which contributes to the Album as whole. That why I hate when people use that term for songs that are not necessarily the main songs.
The filler tracks on Ænima arguably don't contribute to the album as a whole. You have these proggy hard rock songs, and you're suddenly hearing some cheesy little keyboard thing, or a piano piece behind some guy talking, and how 30 seconds of static can be considered to be a song by anyone is beyond my scope of reasoning.

I like the filler tracks on Ænima, but they don't contribute to the album musically, other than making it quirky, which is cool in itself, but dosn't make the tracks segues of any kind.

The intrumental parts on Lateralus could be more considered segues, because they carry the feel of the album.

I don't mind people using the term filler at all, so long as they can back up their reasononing. Some people consider bad/short songs filler tracks, and that sparks up a lot of debate with some bands. Random little tracks that take up time, and the album could arguably do without could quite easily be called filler.

kurrpt 05-08-2006 09:02 AM

that piano thing is actually the same notes as the intro to Jimmy...

those tracks are meant as segways. Normally they use that to "change the air" which works especially well if you are just letting the album play through, and even more interesting the first time through the album

Shadius 05-08-2006 09:03 AM

Certainly is, but the filler tracks lose any sense of unity the album might have had. They make it lose flow.

Ænima is my favourite Tool album, regardless.

kurrpt 05-08-2006 09:17 AM

if anything, i feel they do quite the opposite. I only really listen to the new album from beginning to end now. Any old album, i pick and choose

Shadius 05-08-2006 09:20 AM
if anything, i feel they do quite the opposite. I only really listen to the new album from beginning to end now. Any old album, i pick and choose
Wait... I was only talking about Ænima. The tracks on the new album are more segues than most Tool filler tracks, especially considering they do more to make themselves stand out as songs for the mostpart. I mean, Lost Keys is possibly the best segue they've done.

clearvision 05-08-2006 09:47 AM

I think it's the other way round. The new album lacks the flow that Aenima and Lateralus have.

Eon blue apocolypse provides a great gateway between the heavy grudge, and the not so heavy patient...

Die eier von satan provides the perfect link between the very angry jimmy and the mellow push!t riff. Useful idiot breaks up the hard rock songs at the beginning of the album to stop it sounding monotonous and lets the listener reflect on the first few tracks while it builds into the 46&2 riff.

And ions, the best filler track imo. It's just soo tasteful. Bringing in the static, just building the tension into third eye which is just quirky really...

I think the tracks on Aenima were essential, if you listen to undertow it's all pretty non-stop. But that's ok, it's not as long as any of the latter albums. The latter albums have longer songs and it all gets pretty intense and the segues help the album flow.

That being said the new album the segues aren't as well done. Lost keys =>Rosetta stoned is nice. But lipan conjouring is really not. They should have probably added a segue in between Wings and the pot, then gone straight into lost keys after. And well vigniti tres is pretty boring apart from the one noticable part, which i now seem to forget. :-/

kurrpt 05-08-2006 09:49 AM

i would HARDLY consider Jimmy an angry song tbh...

as far as the new album lacking "flow", thats your opinion

Esoteric_Creator 05-08-2006 09:59 AM

I'm not going to lie...I was brought to tears (or at least watery eyes) whenever I have listened to the new album..

It has the same effect on me as Lateralus, yet this only happens whenever I'm reading something that really moves me (such as a spiritual revelation, psychological epiphany, or emotional understanding), or if I'm learning something that really hits to the core of me (e.i. spiritual knowledge, personal/world/universal knowledge)..

So, I'm connected to my emotional side when needed...so, sue me..

clearvision 05-08-2006 10:08 AM
i would HARDLY consider Jimmy an angry song tbh...

It feels angry, not in the way that intolerance does. But the subject matter and the way the music moves around maynards quite quiet delivery just seems like built up anger. It gets released at the end 'i'm heading back hooome' then after the riff is repeated a few more times it drifts into die eier von satan.

Yeah most of the stuff i type is my opinion. I'm not trying to say what i say is gospel or anything. If you don't agree (which you obviously don't on the flow thing) that's fine

Adam Jones is GOD 05-08-2006 11:46 AM

Its #4 in my record shop in the charts. And this is against the usual sub par indie, rap and pop trash.

Im still waiting on someone to get the opening lyrics to Rosetta Stoned, its bugging me.

kurrpt 05-08-2006 11:50 AM

their single hit #3 in the US, in the respective genre

edit :
Im still waiting on someone to get the opening lyrics to Rosetta Stoned, its bugging me.
if you've noticed the other lyrics of the song, its not supposed to be clear. I DO know the gist of what its getting at, and honestly, it still doesnt make sense

Adam Jones is GOD 05-08-2006 11:54 AM

The single counts in the US chart, unlike in the UK. But considering how big they are in the US compared to the UK, im happy its doing this well.

Plus there's a big poster in the window of my record store i'll be asking for when it comes down :)

kurrpt 05-08-2006 11:59 AM

yea, i really need to decorate the new place. Bare walls are starting to get to me...

WAK (while killing) 05-08-2006 01:56 PM

Does anyone here know anything about the puzzle contained in the artwork for 10,000 days?

kurrpt 05-08-2006 02:01 PM

it was red lettering and the sticker itself was translucent (see-through)

it was attached to the shrink wrap on the CD

kurrpt 05-08-2006 02:02 PM

there is no "puzzle". thats something pretensious TOoL fans think of to make it sound more important, or thought out

Mambuto_O'Mally 05-08-2006 03:54 PM

I've posted here a long time ago, and well, I've picked up 10,000 Days. IT IS ****ING AWESOME. All of the songs are amazing except Lipan Conjuring and Viginit Tres (whats the deal with that one anyway). My favorite song is probably Right in Two. Speaking of which, is that slide part at the beggining bass? I know Justin has a bass Whammy so I was thinking that might be whats going on.

Turbonegro 05-08-2006 04:39 PM
Hey, I know this is kind of a throwback, but I kind of wanted to get this forum back on track... you know... theories on the songs?
One of my all time favorites is The Patient off of Lateralus. I love the guitar intro and the drums throughout, but I've been thinking a lot about the lyrics:

03 the patient •

A groan of tedium escapes me,
Startling the fearful.
Is this a test? It has to be,
Otherwise I can't go on.
Draining patience, drain vitality.
This paranoid, paralyzed vampire act's a little old.

But I'm still right here
Giving blood, keeping faith
And I'm still right here.

Wait it out,
Gonna wait it out,
Be patient (wait it out).

If there were no rewards to reap,
No loving embrace to see me through
This tedious path I've chosen here,
I certainly would've walked away by now.
Gonna wait it out.

If there were no desire to heal
The damaged and broken met along
This tedious path I've chosen here
I certainly would've walked away by now.

And I still may ... (sigh) ... I still may.

Be patient.
I must keep reminding myself of this.

And if there were no rewards to reap,
No loving embrace to see me through
This tedious path I've chosen here,
I certainly would've walked away by now.
And I still may.

Gonna wait it out.

I have a theory: This song is about Maynard's mother, who was a cancer patient for 27 years (this might also be the reason for the title "10,000 days (27 years is 9,855 days... almost 10,000.)) ANy thoughts?
That is actually a really good concept i never would have thought of anything like that, well done if your right. But to be honest it must mean something...
Im still waiting on someone to get the opening lyrics to Rosetta Stoned, its bugging me.
The whole song:

Alrighty then... picture this if you will...

Time to de-wrap that chili dog
Eat a box of krispy kremes
We've ID'd an air pollutant [indiscernable] area 51
Contemplating the whole truth
Of people thinking we just took a flaming
Stale banana split the sky light, well
One opened up we'd expect to see a place like this
Code red i'll put us in a diamond setting
Right on my birkenstocks in the open
Holy ****ing ****... holy ****ing ****...

Let the x-file be entered
As some kind of blue creature
[indiscernable]
If you look at your appearance for a moment you can see
Another banana bourbon enema
Someone hovered above my buckeyes
My daily chore
Maybe i'll run over the upper lip but all i could think was
[indiscernable] ****ing cats

The sewer line is waiting
Like an apparition he had me crying out
**** me! sodomy!
A dead head chemistry! bladder problems won't stifle me!
If i can't make it, people who are watching see.

And after calming me down with some orange slices and some needle spooning
He revealed to me a singular purpose, he said, you are the chosen one
The one who will deliver the message
A message of hope for those who choose to hear it
And a warning for those who do not
Me, the chosen one... they chose me
And i didn't graduate from ****ing high school

**** the bed
**** better
You better
You better listen

He looked right through me
With somniferous almond eyes
Don't even know what that means, must remember to write it down
This is so real,
Like the time that he floated away
See my heart is pounding
Cause this **** never happens to me
Can't breathe right now, it was so real
Like i woke up in wonderland
Also a bit terrifying
I don't want to be all alone when i tell this story
And can anyone tell me why? [indiscernable]
Will i ever be coming down?
This is so real, finally it's my lucky day
See my heart is racing
Cause this **** never happens to me

Can't breathe right now

You believe me don't you, please believe what i just said
See they're telling true and... and this wasn't all in my head
So they took me by the hand and invited me right in
Then they showed me something
I don't even know where to begin
Strapped down to my bed,
Feet cold and eyes red,
I'm out of my head,
Am i alive am i dead,
Can't remember what they said
God damn **** the bed
Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position
Such a heavy burden now to be the one
Born to bear and read to all
The details of our ending
To write it down for all the world to see
But i forgot my pen, **** the bed again
Typical
Strapped down to my bed,
Feet cold and eyes red
I'm out of my head
Am i alive am i dead,
Sunkist and Sudafed, gyroscopes, and infrared won't help
Brain dead, can't remember what they said
God damn **** the bed
I can't remember what they said to me
Can't remember what they said to me
Made out to be a hero
Can't remember what they said

[indiscernable] oh no
God damn **** the bed

Darkness 05-08-2006 07:14 PM

Wow thanks dude. Where did you find those? (I never exactly looked myself..)

Sleeper 05-08-2006 07:22 PM

If you search google, there are lots of sites with them. Toolshed has them now:

Syncratic 05-08-2006 07:38 PM

I got the album on Friday.

I gotta say, the artwork owns all.

"Wings/10,000 Days" are beautiful, and so is "Right in Two".

"The Pot" was even cooler than I had expected.

"LK/Rosetta Stoned" are odd but very cool.

Overall, I loved the album.

I'm Charming 05-08-2006 07:42 PM

I've been really into Opiate & Undertow lately.

I think I enjoy those more than 10,000 days because they have more of a "metal/hard rock" sound to them.

Anemia is my fav though.

WAK (while killing) 05-08-2006 07:45 PM

I don't know about anyone else, but Jambi has really grown on me.
