Is it on right now?

Because I will tune in if it is.
no, I think it was on at 7, it'll be on next week at 7 though. the top 10.
The poll may be up tonight. :)
Thanks to my help.

No seriously you did alot of work.

RockAndRoll 03-19-2005 07:39 PM
A bunch of my friends want to start a band, so I agreed I'd play guitar. Unfortunately, none of them are really that good at their instruments at all, so I've been searching for easy songs that are still cool. Any suggestions? late 60s early 70s bluesish rock prefered (or any psychedelic).

So far I've got a couple Cream songs, and a couple Hendrix songs that should be easy enough for them.

edit- and the drummer is apparently really good, haven't seen him play yet though...
which songs from each?

I'm still tuning in.

What about Sunshine of Your Love, that's an easy song. Down By the River is fun to jam to.

thickasabrick 03-19-2005 07:42 PM

Sunshine of Your Love, Strange Brew, Purple Haze, Hey Joe, Wind Cries Mary. I figure I can show them some Beatles songs too (just the easier 12 bar stuff, like Day Tripper).

edit- Ya I was thinking of a few Neil Young songs. Basically, if the bass and rhythm guitar aren't too difficult...it will be fine. I'm gonna be playing lead guitar (and most likely singing if it comes to that)

Walrus Gumboot 03-19-2005 07:43 PM
heh...sounded like you directed that toward me jpj.

Live-Aid concert is on now on Whyy. U2 is Performing...i hope i didnt miss to much of the whole thing.
On TV? Which network?

Distant Echoes 03-19-2005 07:48 PM
Hmm Do you have a good singer?
I'll be singing. I'm the only one of my friends who has a good voice. (and is good enough to play and sing most likely..which is kinda sad)

edit- I'm thinking "Truckin" will be a good one, although I doubt anyone will be able to sing harmony. "White Rabbit" as well.

How about cowgirl in the sand? That might be fun if you're up to it since most of the effort is in guitar

My friends play nothing or ukulele

ukulele's alright

thickasabrick 03-19-2005 07:59 PM

I bought a real ukelele when I went to Hawaii. I didn't wanna get one of those cheap little decoration type ones, so I went into a guitar store and they had a whole bunch of good ones. I still play mine quite often, the novelty hasn't really worn off yet.

edit- one of my friends said he could play keyboard...and I asked him what he could play. His reply: "Well I can't play any real songs or anything, but I can make cool sound effects with it"

 wow, that's sad.

Broken Arrow 03-19-2005 08:04 PM

My and me cousin jam on my aunts keyboard. We put it on the drum set setting then he makes a beat then I use the boongos, tambourine, cowbell, congos. It's acctually quite fun.

thickasabrick 03-19-2005 08:06 PM

The thing is, two different "groups" of friends asked me to be in a band. One is the muscally talented (and boring) people I normally don't hang out with, the other is the untalented guys I normally hang out with.

I choose the untalented guys. I figured I might as well be with friends if I'm gonna be taking it semi-seriously.

edit- I've got an old organ (it was my grandmas) from a few/several decades ago. It's pretty cool. I usually just set up drum beats with it, although I figured out how to play using the drum beats, the bass foot pedals, and then playing guitar. I'm a one man band (although my repetoire is extremely limited).

Well my other group of friends are really good at their instruments. I think I've mentioned my friend who plays keyboard before...and I've got another friend whos amazing at bass. But I haven't hung out with them since I stopped drinking.

RockAndRoll 03-19-2005 08:11 PM

Well the point is I'm lucky to be in a band with talented friends.

Ya that'd be nice. What kind of music do you guys play? And do you play your own, covers, or both?

Distant Echoes 03-19-2005 08:14 PM

Im playin with my old band this weekend. Its gonna be fun, since its been such a long time. I havent had a jam session all winter though...really sucked

That Live-Aid concert is going for $200 bucks on DVD :amaze: Thats rediculous. My dad said he had two tickets, and didnt go because he had to work. I told him he was the stupidest person i knew and disowned him as a father. The Who are on now...good stuff

Sounds like Neil Young. He liked playing with Crazyhorse cause they were friends and they were fun being around although they weren't that good at their instruments. CSNY were the more talented band and often critized Crazyhorse but Neil preferred Crazyhorse because they were fun and he didnt base his opinion on the musical talent.

Classic rock  and we do both. We started with covers, but have moved on to writing as well. We're slowly converting to doing more and more original stuff. I really want to send you guys some of our stuff so you can give it a listen. I've even promised some people I would but that's usually fallen through (generally because the person who said they'd send me the audio file never got around to it) I have some dvds of us playing at shows but and of practices but I can't load them on to my computer.

Are you comparing me to Neil Young? I will take that as a compliment whether you meant to or not. :thumb:

I've got a couple songs I've written that I wanna show these guys, hopefully they are good enough to play it though.

Yeah I'm gonna see your band this summer. Hopefully.

Is your band like super good or something RaR?
Is your band like super good or something RaR?
Well I can't really answer that question for you. We've been told some very good things though.
Well I can't really answer that question for you. We've been told some very good things though.
Usually when people act modest, that means they are good. What do you play? (I'm sure I've asked you this before). And what kinda songs do you guys write (if you can go more into subgenres)?

edit- I mean what do you play as an instrument.

Get a contract then play Call the Office, because I like that place.

EDIT-He's a drummer

Broken Arrow 03-19-2005 08:48 PM

Slow Slow night.

We need a topic change.

pigonthewing82 03-19-2005 08:56 PM

Do you guys think bands that came out recently could be called classic rock, if they have the classic rock sound?

RockAndRoll 03-19-2005 09:00 PM
Usually when people act modest, that means they are good. What do you play? (I'm sure I've asked you this before). And what kinda songs do you guys write (if you can go more into subgenres)?

Sometimes people are just that way because they aren't good. Regardless I wish you could just hear us and decide for yourself.

I play the drums.

Well I'll try to give you an Idea of our writing. The first song we wrote I would call hard blues based rock. It has pretty memorable guitar riffs, and two guitar solos (one medium one short (although the short one has been developped alot and has become more of a medium length solo). No chorus, the lyrics tell a sort of incredibly short story/fable. about 4-5 minutes long.

Another one of our songs songs though is softer, sort of acoustic guitar feel,
simple drum and bass parts. There's a short drum and bass interlude thing after the first verse and a very short, easy, but emotional type guitar solo. The guitar solo reminds me more of slow southern rock type I suppose. It's a really short song maybe 2 and a half minutes. The lyrics are well I can't really describe them we like to make fun of them (one of the guitarists wrote them and we always make fun of them, partly just because we always make fun of anything anyone does[especially him]).

One we are working on is jazz/rock fusion. Uptempo, has a bunch of different guitar parts, from a jazzy bit, to doubling on the bass, to a pretty cool punching riff and more. We also do a bit where the band does shots and each member takes turns doing short solos. Then the song takes on more of a straight rock feel and goes into what is sort of the climax. Which will feature a bass and guitar solo (at the same time) which we're working on. and then it will go back to the jazz/rock feel. All in all it's going to be our most intricate song yet, it's has a lot of neat things in it. I'm currently working on the vocal part and it'll probably be 6-7 minutes long when it's done.

But then another one of our songs that we've just started working is definitely psychadellic. think pink floyd or radiohead esque.

I thought it'd be a better idea to just describe some of our songs then to give you a genre or anything. I really want you guys to hear some of our original stuff, because i'd really like to know what you guys think of it. Sorry if some of the descriptions were bad, I can clarify anything you'd like.
