I think Mikeal said that there were 6 tracks on it and they were considering another 2.

Close to Morningrise...
I'm pretty sure there's 7 or 8. Altough I didn't pay attention enough to realize if some of them were uncertain.

I read an interview yesterday where he said there would be 5 heavy tracks, one instrumental, one intrumental which they ended up putting vocals on, and he talked about one of the more different songs they've ever done... but I'm not sure if it was included in a previously mentioned song.

I'll look for the link.

i am the robots 06-14-2005 12:27 PM

Sounds interesting, I look forward to it.

BAM!

The 4th or 5th question he talks about the songs.

i am the robots 06-14-2005 12:44 PM

Reading that, I'm really excited, so there are gonna be 8 tracks, woo. But the title, lmao, "Ghost Reveries," what the fuck is up with that?

Cardboard Headgear 06-14-2005 03:25 PM
I had that and Morningview on my MP3 player today. The difference is still amazing.

I don't see what's the problem some of you have with the title. I think It's OK. Besides, it doesn't reflect at all the content on the album. So could someone explain your problem with the ƒucking title?

Det_Nosnip 06-14-2005 06:56 PM

It's corny as hell. Sounds like it'll be one hell of an album, though.

Deth 06-14-2005 06:56 PM

I guess I just read that there were 5 heavy songs.

Yay for public schooling!

notchops14 06-15-2005 12:10 PM

Yeah, but as said before, "Baying of the Hounds" sounds killer. Like you're being wrongly hunted as a vigilante or a heretic or something Still-Life-esque throughout a black, swampy forest. Bitchin'.

Det_Nosnip 06-15-2005 12:30 PM

Definetly, that's a great song title. I'm sure the album itself will totally rule, but I can't help but snicker at the title.

clearvision 06-15-2005 12:36 PM

AJIG is obviously quite the Incubus fan

Det_Nosnip 06-15-2005 12:44 PM

They're a fine band.

Kaiwaz 06-15-2005 07:57 PM
I got Orchid a couple months ago and it was just brilliant, they are one of the greatest bands I've ever heard.
Orchid is still brilliant. After you get into that Record and want more, purchase Morningrise. (If you don't already own it)

I don't care what anyone says or thinks...Morningrise is a masterpiece and is by far my favorite album, not Opeth only...In general. And I listen to a LOT of bands.

''Lullaby of the crescent moon, took you
Mesmerized it's kaliedoscopic face...''

bucket 06-15-2005 08:21 PM

High five to Flynn. My favorite album aswell... with Orchid somewhat close behind.

I LOVE the vocals on this part.

I have kept it
The awakeneth symbol
Hidden inside the golden shrine
Until we rejoice in the meadow
Of the end
When we both walk the shadows
It will set ablaze and vanish

Can anyone actually write melodies like Opeth? Mainly Morningrisesque?

I have tried and tried but I absolutely cannot make any decent dual melodies. I've tried recording one melody, then playing something overtop. I've tried writting them in powertab. I've tried writting sheet music. No, no! I cannot do it at all!!

:(

Rothmans 06-15-2005 08:29 PM

I thinks he meant morningrise is his favourite.

Deth 06-15-2005 08:31 PM

You would have to know a lot of music theory to make stuff like that work. That and Mikeal is amazingly talented in every way.
You would have to know a lot of music theory to make stuff like that work. That and Mikeal is amazingly talented in every way.
That's the thing... I do know a lot of music theory

:(

... and Mikael, I'm pretty sure, doesn't know much at all.

Deth 06-15-2005 08:37 PM

I'm wasn't saying you didn't know any, it is just that without you don't have a chance.

I'm sure Mikeal nows more than most.

bucket 06-15-2005 08:46 PM

From watching him play on those two videos on guitar.com I really don't think he does.

He was talking about one of his favorite chords (an Adim7 I believe) and someone off screen asked what chord it was and Mike didn't know. He doesn't know the name of his favorite chord? Sounds to me like he doesn't know theory, but really I'm only basing it on those two videos.

Deth 06-15-2005 08:49 PM

Well, maybe you're right.

Thinking about it, maybe it's Peter who does the harmonies.

Det_Nosnip 06-15-2005 11:38 PM
Well you can safely assume im referring to the UK Opeth fans then :p

Besides, you get the SOTU tour.
Speaking of which....I just purchased my ticket for the Dallas show on July 15. :D

bucket 06-16-2005 12:13 AM

Still don't know if I want to go or not. :-\

Four hours away + no intrest from my buddies.

Good times. Booooooooooo

I would agree im sure that he's had almost no formal musical training (on the guitar at least) Peter looks as though he knows what he's talking about but Mikael looks self taught IMO

Cardboard Headgear 06-16-2005 01:36 AM

Everyone in here should listen to Crimson II by Edge of Sanity (eg Dan Swano + guests). It's awesome, and if you like Opeth you'll most definately like it.

Are we still doing cover songs?

mick7 06-16-2005 03:35 AM

Although Mikael didn't (probably) have an formal training I saw him play twice in Melbourne and he was absolutely amazing! So training or not I think we should all acknowledge that he is one talented bloke.

Det_Nosnip 06-16-2005 12:02 PM

I wonder how he learned to growl+sing....growling isn't exactly easy to just pick up without ****ing over your vocal chords royally.

Adam Jones is GOD 06-16-2005 12:08 PM

Thats what happens when you try and talk about one band while typing about another.

God i've had a few slip ups this month

Aside from the fact that Mikael Akerfeldt, Peter Lindgren, and Anders Nordin (original drummer) knew each other before the band because they tought guitar (or drums in Anders' case) at a music store, I agree thoroughly, Mikael probably knows very little music theory...

the2stranger 06-16-2005 04:52 PM

does anyone really care?
this man does produce one of the greaest songs IMO, so I don't care if he learned to play on a super school, or if he got his first guitar while buying a carton of milk.

as long as he continues to do, where I love him for, all is fine with me.

OfSins&Shred 06-16-2005 07:46 PM

Opeth and Jens Bogren have now finished the recording and mixing of the latest opus "Ghost reveries". The album will be mastered today (June 16th) at the Cutting room facilities in Stockholm. Total running time will be around 65 minutes. Full tracklisting is:

Ghost of perdition
The baying of the hounds
Beneath the mire
Atonement
Reverie/Harlequin forest
Hours of wealth
The grand conjuration
Isolation years

A release date has yet to be confirmed, but it's planned for late August/early September worldwide through Roadrunner records.

I agree, who cares about whether he knows theory or not, his music is what counts.

Dude3 06-16-2005 09:59 PM

Here's a link to the Opeth coverwork(Its sick IMO), and a little article on the tracklisting:

Oooh...I like those song titles. "Atonement" sounds like a cool one, for some reason.

It's going to kick so much ass for sure.

I was flicking through a Revolver magazine yesterday and they had a section on the SOTU tour and they asked Mikeal a few questions. The last question was what would you name the tour if it wasn't called SOTU?

His responce:
"On The Verge Of Selling Out Tour"

Crazy Mikeal

Det_Nosnip 06-17-2005 01:18 PM

Well, let's face it....Opeth and Strapping Young Lad are the only real bands of merit on that tour. Those 2 alone were easily worth my $30 bucks, though.

James Van Halen 06-17-2005 02:45 PM
Thinking about it, maybe it's Peter who does the harmonies.
You don't have to be a theory professor to know wether harmonies sound good or not. Harmonies are not that complicated, I do them myself all the time, and I barely know any of the chords i'm playing except for the normal boring ones(G, C, so on and so fourth).
People mistake the knowledge of theory and the knowledge of music entirely too much.
