Hey, I'm new here and I have a pretty specific request. I'm really digging black metal and its variants a a genre, but I can't respect lyrics that promote senseless hatred/satanism/anti-christian themes, "I-recorded-this-myself-in-my-bathtub" production quality. (I realize that some production concessions may be necessary, but I just don't want crap that sounds like it was played by cripples inside of a tin can.)

I want to be clear here that I'm NOT trying to start a debate about religious ideology, or to push an agenda. Enjoy what you will, and please don't criticize me for respectfully seeking your advice. Thanks.

Here are a few bands I'm currently into:

Alcest
Borknagar
Carach Angren
Darkspace
Enslaved
Negura Bunget
Wodensthrone

I'm also a huge fan of viking and/or folk-metal, which is frequently tinged with black influence. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Tyler 04-01-2010 09:40 PM

Well, it seems like you're not too worried about production if you're digging Darkspace, so you should probably get some Paysage d'Hiver next.

You'd probably like Windir, too. Arntor is my favourite.

Belenos - Specilege
Epheles - Souviens-Toi

etc

Honestly, I wouldn't sweat the lyrical themes as much as you're doing. It isn't worth it.

T.O.O.H (depending on what you call tasteful I certainly think they are)
Vehemence (not really many solos but mad tasteful leads)
Blind Guardian
Demilich (again, depends on what you call tasteful)
At the Gates
Immortal ( see: vehemence)
Opeth (hate to say it but its true)

check out Emperor dude. Specifically In the Nightside Eclipse. I hate most black metal mostly because the stupid ideology that it's bad if it has good production, but this album is godlike. It doesn't have the BEST production, but it's still definitely very listenable. All the instruments are clearly made out and stuff. To be honest the production is perfect for the mood of the album.

Also, look into Arcturus- Aspera Hiems Symfonia. It could be considered black metal for the most part but with a good dose of weirdness on top. I think you'd like it if you dig Borknagar.

edit: OH **** how could I forget Immortal. Get Sons of Northern Darkness by them. Crystal clear production, heavy as ****, and it's not satan-y in the least (but it is about grim and frostbitten tundras so idk if you're into that)

TzarChasm 04-01-2010 09:58 PM

Wow, I did not expect a reply this quickly, much less two. Thanks a lot, guys. I'm familiar with Arcturus, as I listen to lots of prog and very avant garde stuff as well. I'll look into the rest of everyone's suggestions by tomorrow night. \m/

I don't want to debate the lyrical themes, but that's the one point I won't budge on. I've collected hundreds of sick metal albums over the years without having to digress into concepts I find morally repulsive; it won't hurt me to miss out on bands who just want to piss the world off.

Also, I don't hold production against Darkspace because the awful distortion and the muddy vocals/drums actually fit the music thematically. They come across not as something done to "purify" the music, but to paradoxically enhance it. And it really adds some weight to stretches where the guitars override the synth and the drummer goes into overdrive. Dark Space Vol. III is brilliant.

lol

Dude, if I missed out on a band that I would love just because of lyrics I didn't like, I would considering it hurting myself. Lyrics in metal are not important. It's a proven fact. Hell, you have to look them up to tell what they even are half the time.

Any enjoyment I get from metal is from the music, not the lyrics. Vocals in metal are basically just another rhythm instrument imo

I respect your point of view. I'm not arguing about it, though. If lyrics didn't matter, if they didn't convey a message, then there'd be no need to write songs about raping people with chainsaws, burning churches or oppressing and enslaving other races. All three are themes unfortunately found in metal, which I simply choose not to support.
TzarChasm
lolHuh? >_>

CompanionCube 04-01-2010 11:28 PM

oh come on everyone wants to rape someone with a chainsaw at some point in their life

TzarChasm 04-01-2010 11:45 PM

Yeah, but once you log out of Xbox Live that feeling should probably go away rather naturally...

Meatplow 04-01-2010 11:46 PM

most of the time with black metal I can't understand the lyrics anyway

TimJim 04-01-2010 11:50 PM

i have more black metal bands in my library than i do any other genre with like 170 something. sludge comes in a close second with about 130

if you enjoy that album and find the production listenable, there are countless other bands within the black metal genre then where production values shouldnt be an issue.
