Can I ask you guys if it's worth getting any of Syd Barrett's solo stuff, I've been looking on Sputnik and the albums seem to be pretty poor, but a lot of you guys seems to own some of his stuff, so should I get any or not?
I like them, but they aren't the same as his work with Pink Floyd, and that's why I think that most people degrade them. |
Yer, 'The Madcap Laughs' is supposed to be OK, anyone know if 'Opel' is any good?
|
Notice The Final Cut is getting a getting a good rap here. And so it should. Terribly underrated I think. It's become my favourite of late. I can't stop listening to it!

I just dislike the fact that Roger kicked Rick out for it.

I thought that was for The Wall sessions and tour  Yeah, Rick went on vacation in Greece while they were working on The Wall and Roger kicked him out of the band for it. For one reason or another (Dave and Nick probably talked him into it) Roger let him come back on as a session musician for the tour. He was the only member to actually make money on the tour, the other three spent a crapload of their own money on the tour but he got paid to be on it :D But yeah, Roger didn't actually let him come back to the band for The Final Cut unfortunately. According to something I read though, Rick hit a creativity block around that time or something, so maybe that's part of the reason. Rog is still a dick though  |

That's the reason they gave.. He wanted to do his own thing, but I doubt that being true. It's a shame they never played The Final Cut live.. I would LOVE to see them all get together and tour it... But that's asking for too much. |
Rick was still an official member of the band while they recorded The Wall. But he was in a creative slump as Trav pointed out, and so Roger kicked him out and then proceeded to rehire him as a session musician for the tour. He wasn't with them for the Final Cut though.
And I do think Roger was a complete dick to Rick and the other members, but there is no denying that Rick was indeed in a creative slump. His playing on The Wall is vastly inferior, less noticeable, and less creative on The Wall than it was on other albums. Roger being a crazy egomaniac and putting an insane amount of pressure on him and the rest of the band may have led to the creative slump though. |
Anyone here checked out Water's solo work? Now that I've got all of Dave's I kind of want to look into his. And lately I've had sort of a new found appreciation for his talents as a lyricist.
|
i found a site that interviewed Roger and David about the breakup and about Rick
they said that Rick was starting to go Syd on them you know the drugs and craziness |
In regards to Barrett's solo work, I've heard some songs off of Madcap Laughs and it seems to have some decent material on it. I've yet to buy it though. However I do have Syd's self titled album and I have to say, with the exception of a few tracks, it's definitely a sub-par effort.

That's what Mason said, too. Np - Simon & Garfunkel - Mrs. Robinson. |

Amused To Death is a great album, very similar to The Final Cut. |
^I second that. The songwriting is very much the same, and the lyrics are just as good, if a little over-metaphorical. The usual stadium rock anthems are there and the ballads are just lovely. The only drawback is his voice which is, quite frankly, shot to buggery. He's got alot of singers backing him up though.
If you like The Final Cut, get Amused to Death. |
Do you guys know what is meant by Daisy Chain in the song Brain Damage? I feel no one here has a clue...

Is that the one that Eric Clapton played guitar on? |
I love listening to Pink Floyd whenever I'm high...

I do as well.. But not stoned or drunk is quite acceptable as well. :thumb: |
I have a question.
So a limited number of users post here, and you discuss a band that doesn't exist anymore. It's very interesting and I posted here a while ago, but how long can you discuss the same things between the same users? Just a question. Love the Floyd |

Uhh, by high I did mean stoned...but yeah I like it when I am drunk also:chug: |

I guess this is just to prevent multiple Floyd threads and it's a place where you can ask Floyd related questions, and even if they've already been asked, it's much less annoying having the same questions repeated in one large thread then having people make multiple threads pertaining to the subject. |

A band as deep as Pink Floyd makes it easy to talk about stuff, even if we do repeat ourselves a bit.
Is that the one that Eric Clapton played guitar on?
Nope. This one has Jeff Beck and John Pattituci, though.
Do you guys know what is meant by Daisy Chain in the song Brain Damage? I feel no one here has a clue...
He's remembering making daisy chains, a fairly common practice in England in the '40s and '50s amongst children. I'm not sure if you have green things in the US, so I'll expand upon it. Plants are these things that don't need to eat, since they make their own food. They're very tough things, and although they're living, the majority don't grow. You may have seen trees in a museum, or something. The lettuce you get on your McDonalds burger is a dead plant. Anyways, daisies are a type of flower, which is basically a pretty plant. And you can use the stems to chain them together, and so you have a pretty necklace by the end of it. :p |
I was under the impression he was reffering to something a little more twisted, if you know what I mean.

Wouldn't fit into the context. "Remembering games, daisy chains and laughs..."
|
Yeah that's true, but what type of games? He was demented, could be sex games, and laughing at the fact his old lady was just pounded by his friend...but then that would just be silly. Yours is better.

I mean, just because there aren't any naturally green things left on this barren wasteland we call the US of A, that doesn't mean I can't look up these things you call "plants" on Wikipedia. We're not barbarians you know. This Pink Floyd BBC performance I have is really good. It's mostly Atom Heart Mother stuff on this one, the other has Meddle stuff mostly. If is a really good song IMO, it shows Roger's lyrical-nicity really good and stuff. |
What happened to that DSOTM bootleg, hmmm?
