Why so you could hear him freak out on stage?
He was rarely clear minded when they played live.
so? do u honestly think hendrix was on any less drugs when he preformed, i know toward the end he lost it, but i have a bootleg of him live with pink floyd, and it was brillent |

What does hendrix and him doing drugs have to do with it? Most of the the time Syd would go onstage and either stare into space, or play the wrongs songs. The bootleg must have been very early in PF's touring days. |
Another thing. Why are Syd fans so freaking vague about his greatness? Why was he so great live?

i could rant and rave for many posts about this, but its obvious you wont agree with me in the end, the only advise i can give to see things the way i do is to buy the syd barett dvd. and another thing, he was great live because takes songs like astronomy domine that last for 4 minutes and add antother 3 or 4, and he did things like use a zippo lighter on his guitar strings (thats how dave made those sounds on a saucerful of secrets on ummagumma) |

Ok.... well PF extened the length of their songs live all the time, even without Syd. When you say zippo lighter do you mean a slide? If so plenty of people use them, and Dave was using them since before PF. In response to the bold point, if you brought up something valid then perhaps I would back off. |

It's not like Syd pioneered the idea of improv. |
oh for god sake all i did was say i wished that i could have heard syd on ummaguma look this is getting pointless syd did different things for pink floyd then gilmour did, and gilmour did different things for pink floyd then syd did, and thats all there is too it, and this is just a classic example of gilmour fans not seeing things from the point of veiw of syd fans (not saying your view is wrong)
ANYWAY moving on i always wondered when people said that pink floyd had a good light show, were they talking about things like the animation you see in the wall or what |
Sure, I do prefer Gilmour, but I really appreciate Syd's work. As for the argument, you'll become accustomed to the amazing number of disputes around MX, and a lot in this thread as well. :thumb: rep ++
*sigh*
Why come to a forum if you are just gonna back out of discussions? I think you miss the point of a foum.
the only reason i backed out is because im sick of people feuding over the flaws of the members of pink floyd. they were all brillient in their own way. i just ended it because the conversation was going no where and we were basically dominating the fourm, when people could have been talking about more improtent things |

No one else is talking about anything else, and besides more than one argument can go on at one time. Now tell me, what was so great about Syd? And dont be vague by saying "He was great in his own way". |

ok, he went out of his way to be original, i mean ive never heard anything like what he did, well the 1967-1970 years of the beatles mabye, but he wrote songs like astronomy domine before that. his lyrics have so many meanings, and so many meanings to the individual, and i dunno when i listen to his music i feel inspired, i guess thats why his stuff has such an impact on me |
The only Syd did for me was make one good album. I always thought that with Syd Pink Floyd would have died out with the many other late 60's psychadelic bands. They were able to evolve into so much more musically and lyrically with Gilmour and Water respectivly.
But no one can know, that is just my opinion. |

Wow, that really is amazing. And I sat here thinking that ever other band in the world does that. |

i never said he was the only one, i was asked why syd was so great live, i like bands that have instrumental solos |
Hey, band together and vote for THE WALL in the polls, so the vote doesn't get split and no Floyd albums go through.
Sorry other Floyd albums, but we need at least one to win. |
Vote WYWH, it's better album.
|
this is why we cant all vote one album.... we want other ones to win. VOTE WALL!!
|
Vote WYWH, it's better album.
1 tr00 3 |
WYWH is probably their best album.
|
I voted Wish You Were Here and DSOTM. I think DSOTM is greater musically than Animals.
|
I voted Wish You Were Here. That radio station I mentioned before had a Pink Floyd weekend; they played entire PF albums. I was pretty pissed off that I missed most of it though.
|
i never said he was the only one, i was asked why syd was so great live, i like bands that have instrumental solos
You know Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord can take a 3 minutes song and turn it into a 15 minute long masterpiece? |
You know Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord can take a 3 minutes song and turn it into a 15 minute long masterpiece?
lol why do people think i was trying to take things away from other people by saying syd was good at jamming, all i said was......syd is good a jamming, and i have heard richie blackmore and jon lord jam out and its VERY impressive :thumb: |
Vote WYWH. The Wall is in first place, WYWH is in third place. It needs votes to make sure it goes through. Besides, WYWH is their best album.
|
Uhh...I went with Animals. :D Don't worry, I'm sure The Wall and WYWH will go through easily. Rep ++
|
that list was so hard to choose from because pigs (3 different kinds) is my favorite song, but the wall is my favorite overall album
|
you know even though i am torn i think that the wall is the one that should win. i mean when i listen to the wall in full, by the time i get to the track "outside the wall" i am blown away every time, does anybody else feel the same way
|
I personally don't think The Wall is their greatest work. As far as Floyd's albums, I'd say it's my 3rd or 4th favorite after Dark Side of the Moon, Animals, The Division Bell, then The Wall. Personally, I think Pink Floyd is at their best when writing the longer songs. I'm not talking about going extreme, like Dogs(even though it is amazing) but songs in the 6 to 10 minute range are my favorites. There are many exceptions, but the majority lie within that range, and since the longest song on The Wall is Comfortably Numb at somewhere around 6:30, I appreciate their other albums more. I still think the Wall is a genius peice of music, just not quite as much as some of their others.
