Any idea how true that sound is?

My brother and I just bought some monitors and we are eagerly awaiting their arrival to see how they sound.

Panopticon 01-15-2008 09:26 PM

i couldn't tell you if i wanted to. My dad had them in the garage. I know they sound better than ipod headphones though.

Futuro 01-15-2008 09:26 PM

id be more worried about the envirement. the frequency response of that room is gonna be kinda whack

Teh Fuzzy 01-15-2008 09:27 PM

Would it hurt to use some nice moniters as regular PC speakers as well? Not just for recording/mixing? Gaming, music, etc?

fishbulb 01-15-2008 09:27 PM

Right now i have some cheap PC speakers with absolutely no low end to them so when i get my kick sounding pretty decent on those it is way too overpowering on my normal computer's speakers.

By the way i have one computer for myself and another one with the mixer.

fishbulb 01-15-2008 09:28 PM

You certainly could use monitors as normal consumer speakers but i'm not sure as to why people don't.

Panopticon 01-15-2008 09:33 PM

i know what you mean about crappy speakers...i used to use ipod headphones to mix and then listen to it on these...

Seafroggys 01-15-2008 10:45 PM

I really need some decent monitors. I use $100 Sony Headphones to do all my work on, and I bought $30 PC Speakers just for people to listen to.

I'm thinking of building my own set of monitors though. Just trying to find how-to guides right now.

Anything sounds better then ipod headphones.

Win A Rabbit 01-16-2008 12:05 AM

I'm looking at buying some real good headphones.

I got a gift card to Best Buy, and have nothing to buy from there except blank cd's. But I have over 100 blank cd's right now, so that can wait.

Basic components: Crossover, speaker units, casing, connectors, wire, lots of Foam.

Make the cases. Then use a dremel tool or router to cut the speaker holes. Install the crossovers, and the connectors, and wire up to the speakers, fill with foam, bolt the speakers into the cases

That's about it really. It's so simple. The hardest bit is making the cases.

DrumIntoTheNight 01-16-2008 10:41 AM

Ever have one of those days when you can't concentrate to save your life?

I've been feeling like this all week, and I've got exams at uni on monday =/

Well a tad harder than that, you've got to design the case in accordance with the size and range of the driver to make sure it gives the desired frequency responce. Most monitors are ported so that's something else to think about, because you don't want the air coming out of the port at the back to anti-phase with the air being phased at the front of the cab.

For that you have to start thinking about the size of the port relative to the volume of the cab, and building an enclosed maze so the air has to travel further to get out the back, to prevent anti-phasing.

This is all crap I learned doing my AS level speaker project, I'm still using the unit I made and it sound awesome, if I may say so myself.

maniac0796 01-16-2008 11:25 AM

Rough guide. If we're going to go into all porting, and materials, and design etc, he might as well go out and buy a set of B&W's.

DrumIntoTheNight 01-16-2008 12:59 PM

It's crap, huh?

As long as I can sit through Torchwood later, I'll be fine :D

Seafroggys 01-16-2008 12:59 PM

Yeah I know the cabinet will probably the hardest part, the electronics wiring should be a breeze.

Thats on tonight?

Cool, I might watch it.

I think it's slightly better than Doctor Who tbh. Only slightly....I'm not a massive uber of either though. I just watch them if they're on and I'm not doing anything else.

Reno 911 tonight.

Drum Phil 01-16-2008 01:29 PM

I quite like Dr Who after i saw the xmas day one.

However, farscape and firefly have my heart for sci-fi.
I think she's better than slipknot, but then i think the contents of my toilet are better than slipknot.

If i walked down my street right now and asked everyone in a 10 mile radius if they respect screaming, it'd be a minority that said yes, and an even smaller minority that didnt list a genre that uses screaming among their favourite styles.
so what your saying is that most people like music with screaming?

Also...people don't respect screaming because they don't know what goes into it. They think its just people yelling at the top of their lungs.

Drum Phil 01-16-2008 01:39 PM

Apparently i fail at getting my meaning across.

I was reffering to a minority within a minority.

Also, im in love with this remix: http://download.yousendit.com/3DFCF4065508CF86

Dr. Who is pretty cool, Firefly kicks ***, but Babylon 5 is the best.

From what little I saw, Farscape was a good show as well. Probably the last decent thing the Sci-fi channel has produced.

Panopticon 01-16-2008 01:41 PM

so now more people that dont listen to music involving screaming respect it than people who do?

Drum Phil 01-16-2008 01:43 PM

No, out of everyone who respects screaming, only a fraction wouldnt list genres that use it as one of their favourites.

Seafroggys 01-16-2008 01:45 PM

You are making things way more complicated than you should.
