I have a set of Alembic Tele pickups that are going in a tele soon...
wow an 8 string like that would be amazing
Ya!
That's a really nice shape. Good job on the covers too, they look like they were trixy buggers. Where do you position your bottom strap pin on that shape body?
I'll post a pic of the covers pretty much finished in a bit. Hopefully this will show the straplock position... And no more comments for a while ok, my head is getting too big :p |
so here's what I did with the bugs, er, pickups. Basically just milled out a hole in a piece of wood, then cut out around it with the bandsaw. After shaping etc, I glued the pups inside and drilled little holes for the mounting/adjustment screws.

Here's how I assemble the body to avoid having to hog out huge amounts of wood for the controls compartment.
Here's how it looks after being assembled and with shielding paint applied. |

A plywood guitar
My common friend is constantly building a guitar made of plywood which he does as a habit.
I couldn't believe at first but it actually works well. This is considered Advertising, apropriate action shall be taken |

It really looks beautiful. This started as a crappy Epi LP special II, but I re-finished and gave it some new hardware, as well as new pups. |

That is one very unusual piece of walnut you got there. What are you using for pickups and bridge etc...?
|
im sorry to post this here but its nto worth making a thread for...
SoM, if one would want to build an acoustic guitar, what should they look at for wood. Im talking thickness and such |
I think i am going to wind my own pickups with wood covers and proably a Jtype or Hipshot type bridge?
|

SoM, if one would want to build an acoustic guitar, what should they look at for wood. Im talking thickness and such
John, I've yet to build an acoustic. But the first thing I would do is get a book about it... Anyways, here some pics. This bass isn't really done yet but I did get to play it tonight. Sounds awesome to me, but I never play fretted so what do I know? |
what kind of bridges do you use?
and how do you get your little emblem made? |
what kind of bridges do you use?
and how do you get your little emblem made?
I've used Hipshot, ABM, Schaller, Alembic, and my home made ones. Pretty much up to the customer. This bass has a Hipshot, gold with black saddles (the pic looks black for some reason). My Mjolnir logo is sold as a necklass ornament... |
you wouldn't happen to make single cuts would you?
|
What is your opinion/policy/moral standaing on stealing body shapes from other builders?
|
you wouldn't happen to make single cuts would you?
Hate 'em, design something I like then maybe...
What is your opinion/policy/moral standaing on stealing body shapes from other builders?
I don't know if it's immoral, but i wouldn't copy any shapes of any small or custom builder. Fender or Gibson might be ok. Not that I find those shapes interesting. On another topic, here's a clip of this spalt bass. This was last night after a few too many beers, so chill about the wankery... but since I never play fretted I have a question. Is this excessive fret noise, or pretty much normal? http://www.thorbass.com/sounds/firstwank.mp3 9and what is wrong with my freaking keyboard, the shift keys don't work0 |
Sounds pretty normal to me, I'm sure if you're a bit more used to fretting it'll lessen a bit, and you could always try to notch it out
meh, about the body shapes, it's more like there's a shape I like but you'd be cheaper and I wouldn't be able to afford that anyway, so basically, nevermind. |

mostly a matter of taste I think either way a custom guitar isn't in the books for me for a gooood while |
So now it is pretty much done, I'll be playing it at our xmas jam the next few days

That's a sexy looking bass. :thumb:
|
SoM, thats looking insanely good but, what would it cost (roughly) me to have you build:
7 string guitar 27 inch scale 24 fret all mahogany neck-thru birdseye maple fingerboard black hardtail cool pointy reverse inline headstock emg 707s without the gaping hole if you do guitars that is :) |
My new (and first) project:
Chambered mahogany body Les paul meets ES295 style (the cutaway) Carved Mapletop One pickup in neck pos EMG booster and coiltapswitch Wooden tailpiece |
SOM, would you also consider a quote for making a guitar very reminicent of les claypools picolo bass with 27+ frets?
|

I started by refinishing the neck. Took off the pickguard, used a piece of plexiglass for the control cover put led's in the cavity. popped in a jobber jazz bass pup. Need to refin the body and I'm done. |

I do do guitars, and I also do custom headstock shapes. But "black"? I don't do painted, only natural wood...
SOM, would you also consider a quote for making a guitar very reminicent of les claypools picolo bass with 27+ frets?
And in addition to the above I'm not yet doing any shapes other than my standard "mjolnir" shape, and modifications of it... And since I'm basically here to take abuse tonight, here's a clip of me playing the spalt maple bass. In explanation, I never play fretted bass, and I don't slap or pop. But it sure sounds like I do on this recording. This is all finger style playing, just spanking them strings with good calloused fingers :) http://www.thorbass.com/sounds/track3bvbass1010.mp3 |
