Dave gets some of the best tones I have ever heard though.
Yea it's those beautiful strats. We not really..it's knowing how to use those
beautiful strats.

What type of amps did Mr. Gilmour use?

standard 11-18-2005 02:09 PM

HiWatt heads into Marshall cabs.

Britton 11-18-2005 02:11 PM

Okay that's cool. Did he always use those? or did he ever try out other stuff?

standard 11-18-2005 02:12 PM

I'm pretty sure he used them for a long time.

He also used a Fender Twin from time to time.

Spinal Pap 11-18-2005 02:18 PM
What?!!?!? Dave Gilmour is THE greatest guitarist of all time. Full stop. He is also THE greatest lyricist. Sure, Roger Waters was brilliant, but he just isn't as good as Gilmour. Not calling him "the best ever" is retarded. Have you heard the lyrics from "Lost For Words"? Pure genius. Anyone who argues has no brain, or no taste in music, or both. Probably both.
You need to chill out man. Gilmour is far from being the greatest guitarist ever. Also, considering how the vast majority of people here think Rogers was a better lyricist than Gilmour, you might wanna stop with the insults.

standard 11-18-2005 02:26 PM

Gilmour is a good guitarist, but he even admits he can't play very fast... So he makes up for it with emotion and tech.

Waters lyrics > Gilmours.

Gilmour writes good lyrics, but nothing near what Waters did.

Playing fast is not that important. This guy I know has a twin reverb. man those
things sound nice. I really like Fenders cleans. I'm buying a new amp sometime
soon. I'm gonna look at some fenders

standard 11-18-2005 02:54 PM

Fender Twin Reverb is sometimes considered the best clean sound you can get... And it is damn sexy.

Britton 11-18-2005 03:10 PM

It sounds incredible. Do you know how well they hold up? I'd imagina they do fine...most Fender products do. How much EXP do you have with them?

standard 11-18-2005 03:47 PM
It sounds incredible. Do you know how well they hold up? I'd imagina they do fine...most Fender products do. How much EXP do you have with them?
Amazing. You can find ones from the 60s and 70s for like $700-800 on ebay.

Just change the tubes and you're fine.
Gilmour is a good guitarist, but he even admits he can't play very fast... So he makes up for it with emotion and tech.
Gilmour is far from the greatest guitarist ever, but he's probably my favorite. I just love his tones, and the insane amounts of emotion he gets.

rockinbass17 11-18-2005 08:05 PM

He's probably one of the most emotional guitarists ever. I was listening to SOYCD today and the solo is just amazing.

zabbit82 11-18-2005 11:00 PM

I listenend to Time, Comfortably Numb, and Have A Cigar. Those solos are amazing and very emotional.

Spinal Pap 11-18-2005 11:10 PM

Gilmour had an incredible amount of great solos. The Thin Ice, Mother, CN, Time, Dogs, Pigs, Echoes, and One of My Turns come to my head right now, but I'm sure I'm leaving a bunch out.

I've got about 600 to spend on a amp. So if one of those comes
me way I'm surelly gonna grab it

agreed, those are great solos. I also think that Obscured by Clouds have some of his best work as well, especially in Gold its in the... and Childhood's End

I always liked 'Another Brick pt 2' solo.

BrownSugar 11-19-2005 05:48 AM

His solos are never that hard to play, but gosh darnit if you can get em to sound the same. Theres a select few of guitarists who I believe that people should not attempt to cover, Gimour is one of em. Best left alone and un-butchered.

Spinal Pap 11-19-2005 10:07 AM

Yeah. I can't stand Korn's cover of ABITW, it just doesn't feel right.

Britton 11-19-2005 12:53 PM

I kinda like it...the original is better but I realy have no problems with
korn version

Doctor Night 11-19-2005 03:29 PM
Yeah. I can't stand Korn's cover of ABITW, it just doesn't feel right.
What, When did that happen?

standard 11-19-2005 03:39 PM

The murder happened I think 2 years ago. Did Korn ever get charged for that one? They should get life in prision. It's terrible.

Gilmours solos aren't hard, but getting the same emotion he had, and even close to his tone.. Untouched!

The muder:lol:

Britton 11-19-2005 03:56 PM

How was it a murder? they coverd a song. Any way I think it actually happened
this year...not too sure about that though.

standard 11-19-2005 04:08 PM

They massacred as song. Not covered.

It was ATLEAST mid-late 2004.. Around October, because that's when I heard it on the radio.

Oh, I was knee deep in Pop-Punk, before my dad bought me 'DSOTM' and 'TW' and changed my entire musical view on things.

I agree. Roger's lyrics are stunning. Dave's are somewhat potch. Not bad, but in comparison. Well... they don't even bare comparison.

Wecome to our side of the moon

Now that I think about it you are probably right baout when the massacre
came out

That's how I got into Floyd too, my dad bought me a copy of Dark Side. I didn't like it at first, that was when I first got into classic rock and my favorite band was Zeppelin. It was so much different. It took me about a month to really get into it.

You can't compare. They are two different lyric apporoaches.

I always loved his solos on The Wall. Very deep, managing to express the whole dark tone in ways even Waters' lyrics have trouble doing.

Britton 11-19-2005 09:26 PM

Daddy's flown across the ocean...

I love the wall. It's so increible. are there any documentary's on it?

standard 11-19-2005 09:30 PM

Maybe the movie.

It kinda explains it.

Well there's the movie. And the DVD has special features with some interviews and insights, so the special features are kind of like a documentary.

Theres a documentary on the huge stage show that can be found on the Echoes webpage. Just go to Pinkfloyd.com and find your way to the videos section.

guitarded_chuck 11-19-2005 10:08 PM

Obscured By Clouds is such a great album! Gilmour shines throughout the whole album with some great solos. The best probably on "The Gold It's In The...". Glad I finally picked it up.

It's great. It was last christmas when my dad bought me tw two albums, and at first I hated it. I thought it was awful, then one day i just sort of liked it, and here I am now. But since last christmas, I've got into Metal. But Floyd have a reserved space in my big book of things I like. DSOTM showed me about real music.
