Also, have any of guys heard of Paso Bionic? He is a DJ/turntablist from Australia who has done work with Curse Ov Dialect and TZU, as well as releasing a solo instrumental album called Empty Beats For Lonely Rappers.
Good stuff :). |
Antipop Consortium are a groovy ass group.
Anyobdy here like Blueprint?
Yeah he is not bad. I like some of his production and he is brilliant on the mic on the Soul Position LP and EP. |
Since this is a thread about rap and all, I have to ask about something I hear in tons of rap songs.
What exactly is a shorty? |

I'm sure this has all ready been asked maybe.
But uh, I'm really getting into that new Common song. My question is, what other Common albums should I download? And what other artists sound like him? (and albums to download from them) |
Common is a really consistent mc, he has imo never put out a bad album. His best are:
- Resurrection (very jazzy production and common at the top of his game lyrically) - One Day It'll All Make Sense (somewhat less good than Resurrection but still very nice, G.O.D. & Retrospect For Life alone already make it worth the download/purchase) I'am assuming you already have Be, if not, download that too. Everything I've heard from Like Water For Chocolate is great too, but I haven't heard the full album. Electric Circus is pretty experimental, but it's nice, it grows on you. I can't tell you anything about his debut because I haven't heard it yet. Anyway, bands/artists which sound like Common: - Black Star (they only have one album, so download that one, it's a classic) - Mos Def - Black On Both Sides (debut from one half of Black Star) - Reflection Eternal - Train Of Thought (collaboration between the other half of Black Star (Talib Kweli) and producer Hi-Tek) - The Roots - Do You Want More?!!!??! , Illadelph Halflife & Things Fall Apart (yes indeed, 3 albums, all three are greatness and I'd call them all classic) I hope you were helped with this :) |
The Roots inked a deal with Def Jam. Holla!
its a slang for baby
Like, a literal baby? That doesn't seem to make sense in every context. It makes sense in songs like Gold Digger, but take One time 4 Your Mind by Nas: "Send a shorty from your block to the store for phillies". eh? eh? |
Shorty is slang for both little kids (or someone younger than yourself) and one's girlfriend/attractive females.
|
has anyone heard the new Blackalicious yet? I picked it up the other day but I've yet to listen to it.
|
It's my favorite album released this year so far. Really solid. Nice n' funky.
|
I think I'll be ordering The Craft with birthday money, provided I get birthday money. Any other recommendations?
|
Depends what you don't have and what you are looking for. If you don't already have it, I'd say get Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's Mecca & The Soul Brother. Just an amazing rap album all around.

I second that. Also, if you don't have Gravediggaz - 6 Feet Deep (I think it's called Niggamortis in the UK,) check that one out, I think you might like it. And maybe give Jeru the Damaja's The Sun Rises in the East a shot. "D. Original" is a classic, and it's got a few other nice ones. |
Jeru the Damaja's playing at my university (or somewhere near by) soon, I think.
|
when it comes to rap....i used to listen to it all the time..now i only listen to rock..and the occasional rap...but the only rappers i like are snoop dog, 50 cent, eminem, kanye west......basically the really popular ones...btw anyone else think its kinda funny 50 cent has been shot like 9 times? hes bsically an extremely buff tupac
|
Apologies for the kinda crappy post, but would you lads be able to recommend me some stuff that would fit in well with a GTA: San Andreas radio station? I'm thinking things similiar to Nas's Affirmative Action or One Time For Your Mind.
Thanks. |

Nice, seems like he hasn't done anything in ages, didn't know he was still touring. |
There's a possibility that it's just an old poster that hasn't been pasted over yet. Late last year I got excited about the possibility of seeing Twin Zero live, before I realised it was advertising a tour from February.

Only without the talent. |
And charisma.
|
I've been listen to the song "The Next Episode" by Dre, Snoop and Nate Dogg a lot lately and I'm wondering if anyone knows some other good songs that are like that. Thanks.
|
So this past week I finally got around to listening to Be and Late Registration, and Be is fantastic, while Late Registration suffers from the same things The College Dropout suffered from (a little too long, too many skits) and has a few too many guest appearances.
|
Latyrx have been growing on me. I wish DJ Shadow would release more original material. Sigh
|
One skit is generally too many for me. I haven't heard Be yet, but it's on my list. I just reviewed John Legend's album for sputnik, on which Kanye produces 5 songs. It's not really hip-hop, but it's the reason I came into the thread.
True...I would say, "unless it's a well-done skit", but there are no good skits. Another problem with Late Registration is that Kanye is not a very good MC. |
After seeing it advertised on cartoon network for weeks, I got Danger Doom's "The Mouse and the Mask." I really like it, very good flow to most of the songs. The phone calls from Shake are pretty funny too.

There's a pretty good chance he'll be playing. He has done a show here a few weeks ago. Unfortunately I couldn't go... :( Anyway, the new wu-tang "album" (collaboration between wu-members and indie mc's) looks pretty darn good. Check out some songs on www.okayplayer.com (now hear this, on the right). |
rap on
|
Allright, Illmatic has grown on me so much. I've had the songs running through my head constantly for about the past week. I have a niec $20 Best Buy gift certificate, and the question that faces me now is: What Nas album should I get next?
|
Stillmatic.
|
Stillmatic isn't really anything compared to Illmatic, what everyones view on Common?? I got Ressurection and was blown away and Be aint too shoddy either. Any artists with that chilled out old school beat style and un-cliched concious aware lyrics (I dont like rappers that sound all rough and forced, the voice has to be chilled and smooth like the beat) that anyone could reccomend me?
|
I got Late Registraiton, and it's pretty good.
|
yeah i just finished listening to The Craft and I have to say that its pretty good. The stand-out tracks so far are "Supreme People", "Side to Side", "Black Diamonds and Pearls" and "Ego Sonic War Drums."
All in all, it's nowhere near the excellence of Blazing Arrow or even Nia, but it's still better than the vast majority of hip-hop out there right now. |

To me, Nia was really great for about 2 weeks, but then it wore off majorly. Now I mainly think it's kind of boring. |
I like Nia better, because it has more of a personal feel to the songs and has more stand-out tracks: "Shallow Days", "Trouble", "Cliff Hanger", "Sleep", "As the World Turns". The production as well is much more ethereal and songs flow nicely into each other.
But hey, to each his own. |
Nia has one song I like, the rest I find ... bad.
