Im pretty sure you have to be born with a whistle register.
|
Can anyone give me an idea of the proper way to scream, because at the moment im getting the whole Matt Heafy from Trivium tone that just hurts my throat and ends up in me choking...
|
do you have to be born with whistle tone or can you practise and get it going on, and whats a gun exercise to fix your transition between chest voice and head voice good, because about the A range, my chest voice is strained by my head voice is weak... help?
YOu can learn it. But the degree of control and all of that will differ. Question.
How do i do falsetto screams? I can add some kind of rasp to normal fairly low pitched singing by pushing down or something...the weight lifting type grunt, ya know. I followed Merkaba's rasp instruction recording and it seems like i figured that out. BUT... I can't seem to add any rasp to my falsetto voice to do the Matt Heafy screams. Friend of mine can do something close to Matt Heafy screams, but he says he feels it really high up in his neck, almost like the screams come from his head. When i try to add rasp by pushing down to falsetto(like described in Merkaba's lessons) no rasp comes out, and i tried the way my friend described but i can't seem to understand what he's doing either. So, how do i do falsetto screams? |
hey merkaba,
is my screaming, does it sound good? am i doing it right? cuz it doesn't hurt at all http://s5.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0Z86LVKUJ0TIE10ZEEWL2OL09Q |

But i can't get it right following his instructions. Could you or Merkaba could explain how that scream is done? |
I'm not about the mechanics of it, as far as what you do with ur throat. Basically what I did was, I listened to merkaba's thing on his soundclick, then just immitated it and that was it.
|
Hey Merkaba, have you ever written anything about techniques and exercises for improving your falsetto?
Hey Merkaba, have you ever written anything about techniques and exercises for improving your falsetto?
Falsetto only occurs because you lack the strength and flexibility to keep the cords closed. The strength and flexibility thread in the voicehelp hotline will help. I'd only be repeating it. |
I have a question
I usually play Oasis and Jimi Hendrix There voices arent great and i can sing reasonably well but Sometime my voice shakes and kinda freezes Any advice |

I wouldnt know of any other causes. |

so does your falsetto "weaken" as your strength and flexibility increases? |
Normally, I don't talk loud. Does this mean that I'll have to push really hard to sing? I can hit those notes, but I can't sing as loud as a person can sorta shout.
man i talk really quiet and my voice is strong as fuck..... well maybe not as fuck but it's strong. so i dont think the volume of your normal speaking voice determines how strong your voice is. |
Hey
Hey Merkaba, or anyone that could help me out.
I was recently listening to some christmas song that the used had done and noticed that bert sings really. I wasnt sure if he is using his falsetto voice or is it just that he has a high range. If its his falsetto voice would anyone be able to help me out on getting mine better. ( i know that its somehwhere in merkabs links but i just thought i would put that in there because i was asking about falsetto singing):thumb: |
so does your falsetto "weaken" as your strength and flexibility increases?
opposite. It gets stronger. Read that as " At a given note" So say if you have the strength and or setup(if youre a tenor) to sing a c 5 in true voice then at d5 you have to use falsetto...then if you work to be able to close up a d5 in a decent true voice then naturally you're gonna be able to use a better falsetto for that d5 now if you so chose. If you can hold the cords together tighter, for a given note, its easier to let them not be so together and tighter right?:thumb:
man i talk really quiet and my voice is strong as fuck..... well maybe not as fuck but it's strong. so i dont think the volume of your normal speaking voice determines how strong your voice is.
I second that. Most questions like this are identical in concept to "How do I increase my bench press". I mean we can go on and on about little catchy names and terminology but what it all boils down to is working out with good form. And if you didnt know whether or not you had good form you would either research your ass off or hire a personal trainer. |
I expected you to say something like that Merkaba, hehehe
It just feels silly practising falsetto without actually doing anything in a falsetto voice |

How could i get better ? Just practice ? |
Thanks merkaba ill try those tips out.

Hi, I was hoping for some advice because I'm having a lot of trouble with breathing. I've practised a lot (even went to a singer teachers for a while) but I cant seem to inhale using my stomach. Meaning I can inhale and get a large amount of air in my lungs, I can feel it strongly in my chest so I am filling my lungs and I know I'm doing that part right, but I'm having a lot of trouble inhaling with my stomach pushing out (like ive read).
Has anyone got any ideas? It may be because I'm generally kinda skinny, but I can feel it big in my chest but I can't get it so my stomach pushes out. Thanks a lot |

Thanks a lot
If you take a slow deep breath and relax it will naturally come, and if you take a quick breath, acting like you've been shocked or alarmed, ...a gasp naturally makes you inhale properly. Your stomach doesnt really come into play...it just should bellow out a bit as you reach the last part of your inhale...especially for a big breath. But its only because of everything inside expanding because of the air's volume. It takes uncomfortable tension to breath improperly. Some people pull their stomachs in when they inhale. That would require you activating the stomach are. If you relax it will bellow out. Be sure not to lean back which some people do. If you're not tensing the stomach or abs or pulling them in i would say youre in the clear. Along with overpushing. Again....its like saying...So I tried maxing out my bench press tonight....when you havent been working out much or at all. Its not good for you and you should work slower and steadily and build up to more screaming and pushing. Some of the pain however could be coming from your throat due to the extra air, and not your cords. If your throat hurts when you do mid and high EE's at normal push then its more of your cords as well..which is bad. IN any case, You should stay hydrated and do e's at normal speaking push and volume and pitch, sliding down to lower ee's. Lots of e's. Post a sample. short sample. |

ok. dunno of any software or anything. but i took a few lessons once and according to the woman who was teaching me i had to raise my eyebrows really high while singng the high pitches (instead of frowning) it makes you look like an *** but it helps oh and try scales |

Emotions and the like can trigger muscle memorie and a frown is usually part of a tense high larynx position/feeling. But hey....whatever floats your boat. |
Hey, I have a question for anyone who can help me (Mekarba?)
Well.. I've been playing guitar for 3 years now and I've decided to start singing, I've always wanted to but always found so hard to, I just cant seem to understand how I can hear someone sing and then recall what note that is, that is just crazy to me, but now I'm trying to learn again, I'm 16 now.. figured if I start now, even though I suck, I might get better with time.. Well.. my question is.. what's the best way of starting to learn? like REALLY basics! like starting from scratch, like someone who's really bad at hearing notes too.. I'm gonna get into vocal lessons soon when I get enough money but I'm wondering if there's anything out there I can practice to already start warming up and all, maybe I can play some scales on the guitar and try to match my voice? or something? Any help is REALLY appreciated ~Wags |

How can I tell what type of scream I have? All this "falsetto" talk etc.. is confusing me. I wish I could have an audio recording, but the mic I have doesn't want to work with my pc unfortunately.
Anyway, my screams are very powerful and loud, they're not really dark like death metal, but rather very high pitched, like a loud scream except extremely raspy. What kind of scream is this? Also, because my screams are very powerful and loud, a lot of times it looks like I'm trying to show off, when really I'm only just doing my thing. My band mates are telling me to tone it down, but whenever I try to growl or scream any lower they sound like ****. I know it's important not to drown out the music when singing, but it's also important not to drown out the singer too. Ahg. Anyway, most of the time my screams are around the same tone, but sometimes I find myself screaming higher/lower or whatever I did before starting the stanza etc.. Whenever I'm screaming and I feel like half way into it that it doesn't sound right, I change my tone so it doesn't. So sometimes they're like AHHHHHHHHahhhhhhhh, they get high then dark. Any tips on this? Also, the songs we play require a lot of, SCREAM sing SCREAM sing, type of stuff. I always find myself choking on notes or whatever you wanna call it during the singing parts. Usually when I sing without any singing, I sound decent, but because of the whole SCREAM then sing type thing, they end up sounding horrible. I told them we should just get a second singer, but if you haven't realized already, my band mates are ignorant bastards. =\ |
Hey anyone that could help me out im trying to figure out how to keep my voice from being restricted, any tips on what i should do and what it should be like
|
If you start off in basic light voices and slowly add more and more push over the course of a few minutes you can concentrate better on keeping things relaxed like they were when you were doing lighter notes. Start off with "Ah".
You want to concentrate on keeping what it takes to form the note but minimizing everything else. And in a normal speaking pitch and push there is not anything else going on. So start off in that area first and slowly pitch without increasing push or anything else. Gotta go for now. |
I just started screaming (possibly properly) last night. I was going through an amp with a lot of distortion like the guide said to do. Last night my voice started to hurt so i stopped. I didnt really feel any pain in my vocals, just my throat. This morning I wake up and my vocal chords feel, i guess the best way to describe, stretched. On the sides of my neck my vocal chords feel i kinda stressed, like I just did a workout. So am I doing everything, possibly anything, right? Heres a 5 sec. clip of me screaming testing 123.
http://s5.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0UYW0C43HRF6Q0ZUS07FEVJJH6 p.s. im 16 and am trying to get possibly a norma jean styled scream like on memphis will be layed to waste. |

vocal range
hi all,ive been looking at a lot of vocalist forums lately and everyone seems to be claiming to have amazing ranges and they never actually prove it as when asked to show recordings they suddenly dissapear,so id thought id show a part of mine over 2 octaves from C3 to C5 which i recorded on my phone 5 mins ago so the quality might not be that good but you should be able to hear it ok at least. i just did a simple 'ah' at each pitch in a relaxed voice and sustained it for 6-8 seconds or so, although i can go down to E2 and all the way up to E5(thought id get that in there,he he) i thought this would be more benificial as a sort of warm up,by the way im the lead vocalist in a bon jovi tribute band and i like all classic rock music. why not have a go at the recordings yourself, have fun people.:smoke: firstly the C3, a bit of phone gargle on this one, sorry guys! Mainly because I don't know how to but I will look around here on the site and try to find a warmup thread or something. http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=219911 Would you consider seeing how fast you can run as a warm up to running? Because your cords vibrate faster and faster as you go up in pitch. Plus they are being stretched further. so...NO. You should start off in chest voice, speaking voice range....slowly and lightly buzzing the vowels for about five minutes. Then start sliding lower and higher before going way higher. Now, its boring that way, and until you know your limits you should at least start off like this for a few minutes. But I usually do this stuff right after I wake, and getting in the shower (gargling lightly on mid and low pitches as well for a minute in the shower as well) and as I'm getting around getting ready or whatever. But As I normally say, I consider 30 minutes at least if youre going to be doing harsh vocals, and when you finish, do at least five minutes of warmdown exercises or at least some low notes ending in low e's. I remember before I new about warming down I would always sing low notes messing around forming melodies with the music, in the interludes or solos while I was practicing in the car. Just because based on the fact of other muscle groups, that when you work them out, if you do opposite, opposing movements, you help to avoid repetitive stress injuries and the opposing movements relax the muscles that they oppose. Like mixing chest and back in the gym.... if you do a bunch of high pitch stuff or working on range, you should hit some low notes in there as well, and at the end. Its in the voicehelp hotline in that link. |

Vowels at normal voice for about 5 minutes. now im going to take out my keyboard, start at a note that i am comfortable with, and go around it (hitting higher and lower notes). Then im going to sing for a little bit. When I am done singing i will go back to the keyboard, then finish off with some vowels at normal voice. Anything else you recommend. I think im going to stop screaming since the band i am in doesnt require it. We sound sorda like breaking benjamin. So I will work toward actually singing, possibly adding some rasp later. I just started seriously singing a couple of days ago to get rid of the lead singer problem. Thank you you have been such help. |
I just recommend taking your time until you get a feel for your limitations and boundaries. Adding a little more and more over time. I'm not talking about years ....but days and weeks, if applicable. I must say that screaming has made my voice WAY stronger.... But I take my time.....usually.
|
Thanks I doubt im going to scream so much. I am going to work on singing, then adding rasp, then possibly screaming. I figure if I practice singing everyday I will get better over time. Thanks for all your help.
