Mabelobe, it's nice to see another NIN fan here . I'm glad you appreciate Ruiner as well, because for a long time I didn't see much in it. After more and more listenings to TDS, I started to realize just how great that song is, and now it's my favorite from that album and one of my favorite NIN songs ever. As you talked about with your first post, I believe that the Ruiner is actually within the person's mind, as opposed to an outside enemy. Lyrics like "Ruiner's an infector, he's a collector, serving his shit to his flies" and "now the only pure thing left in my fucking world is wearing your disease" lead me to believe this, as they indicate a real sense of decay, especially dealing with the human pyschological mind, which is really what TDS is...an exploration of a decaying human mind. I think Ruiner is the monster that develops in an isolated human mind, and Trent refers to it in the third person because it basically is a seperate entity--an evil beyond that of a sane and normal person.
I love your description of the colorful dynamics in that song--that's one of the things that makes it so great. I love how he buries his voice in the part before the chorus, and then it busts into that huge sound. Also, you'll notice the retruning motif lyrically (and thematically as well) of "nothing can stop me now," which really gives the impression that that song is quite central to the album as a whole, which lends itself to the meaning as I described above. And Hurt is indeed an incredible song. I like your description... It's slow, beautuful, sad, meloncholy, reflective, pensive; yet bitter and angry at the same time. I don't think I've ever heard a more powerful or perfect ending to an album. |
Agreed. I tend to think of the ruiner as an inner enemy than another person....seems more in the reflective nature of TDS as well...

I'm glad the band is releasing a DualDisc the same day the regular album is out 'cause lately so many other albums are being re-released and it sucks to have to buy them again for their extra stuff...anway, can't wait for these release parties to start...they're hosting one here in Austin at the Alamo DraftHouse which is like a theater where they serve beer, i guess and they're gonna be showing "uncut too-hot-for Mtv" NIN videos and some unreleased stuff from the Broken EP...NIN on the big screen, should be interesting. "PLUS a Hard Copy segment on the FBI’s year-long investigation into the Reznor video they thought was a genuine snuff film!" ...I don't think i'd heard of that one

yeah, you should check it out..they usually have pretty good updates..everyday.... oh and by the way...its www.theninhotline.net ...sorry
|
Your other link workerd too...

Ruiner is also my favorite song on TDS..altough I consider The Fragile to be better overall, Its a bit broader in sound and I like that.
The 3 songs I've heared from With Teeth didnt impress me much...but then again, they are more orientated to a TDS kind of sound so maybe its just me. |
ruiner solo is great
|
ruiner solo is great
Indeed....but its a bit crazy playing it forwards.... |
what you mean by forwards?
|
Because trent has some crazy backwards masking on that solo, i dont know if it was recorded backwards and then played in reverse (making it forwards, but with very strange reverse picking sounds on each notes)...
If you listen for it you can hear it.... But it also sounds like he might have then gone back and layered it with the solo done normally forwards to add depth.....because it doesnt sound completely reversed all the time, nor does it sound completely forward.....crazy stuff.... |
Awesome new information about With Teeth (including the album cover)
http://www.nin.com/access/index.html http://www.nin.com/current/index.html Looks as though another NIN album is on deck. :chug: |
Just to bring up the live shows again, I'm going to the Toronto show on monday may 9th, the one that sold out in 8 minutes or so :P. I haven't seen NIN before even though im a fan, what songs do you think will get played? Aside from the obvious such as hurt, eraser, closer, head like a hole, etc

I am looking forward to this album.

Holy ****. "With Teeth" sounds kinda like a mix of Hurt/Wish/The Fragile/SICNH IMO (from their first show on this tour)
THTF Live > THTF Studio |
You went to a concert?
If so, how were the new songs? I'm not getting anything really from the NIN forums :( they just put how the show was. And I'm really eager to know if this album is good or... yeah. |
Nah, I got a boot of it...haven't really listened to much of it though.
|

/Whoah, how did you get it? Not that I want it. < < >> ^horrible shifty eyes. But yeah, from what you've heard, is it good? |
I think he sounds better than ever. I like THTF and the self-titled track
|
Thats good to hear.
Anyone have ideas on the packaging for With Teeth? He said he was going to do something, good, but very different. I have no clue... |
So Kage, you were going to the record release whatever thing right? The one in Houston?
(disguised bump) |
Just got back from the Houston CD release party... All I can say is....wow, just wow. With Teeth kicks so much ass, you guys have no idea.
Many many more details tommorow; right now it's 2:00 AM and I'm tired as hell. |
Dude, I'm literally squirming.
|
Just make sure I tell you about it tomorow. I won't go into it now...but this stuff is going to blow you away, like it did me.
All you skeptics that didn't like THTF, be prepared to be turned completely upside-down. |
does it cost any money to get into?
|
^^^To get into what? The NIN listening parties? Well, they're all pretty much clubs so I guess it would be the regular venue price. Maybe some have that no cover charge before (whatever time). The one here in Austin is only charging $1 but if you want to pick up the cd that night it's $15.

You can't pick up the CD, you can only pre-order it. And my show was completely free. |
Actually, since the party thing is going to be held on May 2nd, just a day before the actual release, we'll be able to pick it up that night there so i had to pay $15 for it (got my ticket online already) plus, we're gonna see some other NIN rare stuff that night.
Anyway, Kage, how was the listening party in Houston? |

I'm going to be honest...it was fucking awesome. I'm working on a full review of it, so I can give some details, like I think Magicaltroll and Madey want. |
Hurry up with the review already....take forever with the order....
|
i heard he went poppy with it, dissapointing since he ripped on marylan manson for doing that and trying to be like trent.

I stumbled across something that might interst you NIN fans.
I was pleasantly surprised to come across a few paintings that have obviously inspired a great deal of NIN aspects. An American artist named Clyfford Still, who was a leading visionary in the art form of "Color fields." In other words, he would create vague landscapes using different colors and shades to form contrasts: "His paintings are non-figurative, and largely concerned with juxtaposing different colours in a variety of formations. Still's arrangements are irregular. His jagged flashes of colour give the impression that one layer of colour has been "torn" off the painting, revealing the colors underneath. Another point of departure, Still uses a thick impasto [paints], causing subtle variety in shade across the painting." When you visit the link below, you'll see exactly what the above paragraph is talking about. And you'll also see a great likeness to a lot of the artwork on The Downward Spiral, an absolutely awesome connection, seeing as how the above paragraph explains almost exactly what Reznor does so well, except instead of painting he does it with sounds to create soundscapes, which also have a visual aura about them. It highlights Reznor's beautiful juxtoposition of visual and audio mediums to gain the desired effect. The Still-inspired artwork of The Downward Spiral is a great visual representation of what Reznor's music accomplishes. For a look at some of his greatest pieces: http://www.clyffordstill.net/art/art.html |
And now the With Teeth review right?....................RIGHT?!?!

For those who don't read the NIN Q&A's on the official website, here are some wise words from Trent Reznor, on the video for THTF:
"The video for 'The Hand That Feeds' is avaiable online. It was directed by Rob Sheridan and I think it kicks ***. I see a lot of you couldn't figure out if it was rehersal footage or a video or what. Mission accomplished. Who says what a 'music video' has to be? To me, the SAFEST thing I could do is follow in the footsteps of my peers and hire one of a handful of 'cool' directors who would want to come up with a 'clever' concept. I could pretty much guarantee a place on MTV and the director has another demo on his reel on his way to becoming a big, famous MOVIE director. Oh yeah, and I could pay a LOT for it, too. All of that seems dated and stupid to me. 'The Hand That Feeds' is a straight-ahead song that I felt didn't need a big bloated production to support it." 3/22/05. Overall, I like what he had to say, and I'm glad he commented on the surge of music video directors taking on big, Hollywood blockbusters. |
Ah, I see. At mine they had pre-orders, and you could get a free 7" Vinyl single if you pre-ordered it there.

And that art is pretty cool... I lvoe art like that, where it doesn't really have anything in it, just random shapes sorta.
|
I remember seeing another artist do that kind of stuff before, but it was a looong time ago... But I remember thinking it was awesome.
