i doubt yours are better than aps's hes a very good writer..

fromfirsttolast911 02-28-2005 07:02 AM

skilled..

theredwonder 02-28-2005 07:17 AM

^^out.

Wow, it's nice to see the random chattings of S&L back but i'd suggest keeping it low since we don't want Burt closing it again.

Oh and Zep i love that avatar :)

A_Perfect_Sonnet 02-28-2005 07:21 AM

So the new challenge word is up, and I'd like to suggest everyone to enter it. The word is pretty versitile in use and could show some real inspiration if used correctly.

theredwonder 02-28-2005 07:25 AM

I've never entered a challenge but perhaps it's time for a change.

APS, i think we should either -

- Purge S&L
- Teach the majority of it's current inhabitants not to be n00dz.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 02-28-2005 07:35 AM

Psssssssssssst. TRW.

/Points at reason why community thread was closed in the first place.

AIM me.

Nightvision 02-28-2005 08:10 AM

Hmmm, actually, a purge of S&L would be a good thing.

If we can get a group of 'power-users' on here again then we'd probably be able to keep some kind of lid on it. It just seems that when the old community thread went, a lot of the main posters in here pretty much left, which let the n00bz take hold.
Don't get me wrong, I don't want elitism, but something has to be done before I blow my **** brains out.

I call a revolution.

theredwonder 02-28-2005 08:13 AM

Perhaps bumping your old guidelines thread might be a good idea. You did one right? Just an attempt to inform the newer users about the rules and general niceities of S&L.

Or we could just hijack and flame

APS - I'll add you but i'm barely on AIM, i mainly use MSN.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 02-28-2005 08:14 AM

Well, Burt's been good about banning the idiots, most of them at least. Which keeps spamming down to a minimum, aside from the angsty arguements every once and a while. I think everyone's been better about it really. The noobs who crit eachother like little homos is what gets to me worse. That and the general decline of decent writing on the boards.

morrissey 02-28-2005 08:15 AM

It feels like every thread I read, there is rarely one good crit, even on a decent song.

I would do something about it, but at this point I can't be bothered.

Maybe I'm just seeing the past with rose-tinted glasses though. Perhaps things were this bad back in December.

Nightvision 02-28-2005 08:17 AM

I would bump it, but searching's been disabled, and if you think I'm wading through 300-odd pages of generic emo titles, then you have another think coming. :)

It was enough work ploughing through the pages hunting for the near-mythical "Can u smell it?"

Nightvision 02-28-2005 08:20 AM

Yeah, I agree with you mozz, although having said that, I got some excellent crits on my last piece, which I intend to return. Dunno about you guys, but I'm going to make a conscious effort to really kick some gimp n00b butt. Not quite APS style, but I'll definately be critting, and critting hard.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 02-28-2005 08:21 AM

This is my satire of most of the "in-depth" crits now plaguing the boards, yeah I DID write the song:
Scooby Snacks and Heart Attacks

Verse 1
I love unicorns,
I watched some ****.
Then I bought some lube,
Who wouldnt, when porns on the tube?

--OMG MAN, AMAZING IMAGERY I LOVED IT.

Chorus

There's a burglar in my house,
He's as quiet as a mouse.
I took a shower to delouse,
And saw him coming up the stairs.

--OMG MAN ****ING AWESOME AGAIN, YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHANGE THAT 3rd LINE THOUGH, IT SEEMS A BIT OFF RHYTHM, I DONT KNOW JUST LOOK AT IT LOLZ!

Verse 2

He pointed a gun to my head,
Said "You are gonna be dead."
I cried as my tears dripped to the ground,
I'm breaking down,
I'm breaking down.

--HOLY COW HOW DO YOU DO IT? I DIDN'T THINK IT COULD GET ANY BETTER, BUT IT FEELS LIKE IM THERE!!! AWESOME STUFF MAN

Chorus

Outro

Now I'm in a coffin,
Nothing rhymes with coffin,
But I'm dead,
I'm dead,
He killed me.
He would've gotten away with it too,
If it weren't for those "meddling kids"...
THE GANG AND SCOOBY DOO!

--I'M BREATHLESS, THE END WAS SO POWERFUL, I REALLY GOT THE FEELING YOU HAD DIED. WOW.

THIS WAS AWESOME, SOME OF THE WORDS DONT FLOW BUT OTHERWISE IT WAS GREAT!
9/10

CRIT MINE?
theredwonder 02-28-2005 08:30 AM

I bumped your thread Jazzy Jeff, it took a while but it's up there. Hopefully it'll help.

Scanning the threads it seems you've done a lot of these types of threads so i subscribed to a few and if anyone needs help in the particular area you've covered i'll direct them appropriately.

I also read some old posts i used to make. I was such a faggy n00b.

Nightvision 02-28-2005 08:42 AM

haha, I read a few of my first songs, and man... they sucked.

It's actually quite interesting to see how I've developed as I've been here - this place has improved me, no end.

The Fall of Troy got signed to Equal Vision Records. I got into the art program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. No school for like two more days. Today was a good day.

theredwonder 02-28-2005 07:20 PM

I wrote two songs today.

I also did two critiques.

It seems my daily S&L quota is filled. Now can somebody please give me their opinion on Mew?

What were they signed to before? I have their (downloaded) self titled cd. Awesome band, seeing as the oldest member is 18.

Grats APS...

Red: I am sick... I am going to sleep... I cant keep my eyes open :upset: .

You'll get one in return from me homie. Thanks.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 02-28-2005 09:11 PM

They weren't signed.

CSD & the Soul Machines 02-28-2005 09:23 PM

Kings of Leon anyone?

Just copped me Aha Shake Heartbreak...and I love it.

CSD & the Soul Machines 02-28-2005 09:28 PM

As for the posts above...I agree that S&L has been lacking for quite some time now. I'm going to get back into it again so maybe I can help some of the better writers here with making this joint as spiffy as it used to be.

theredwonder 03-01-2005 07:59 AM

I prefer Youth and Young Manhood no end, lots more catchy songs.

I'm going to try and spend a little more time here too, weed out the idiots and help encourage the better writers.

metaliq - whenever you've got time, as long as you get to it.

That's awesome, Equal Vision is awesome. Coheed and Cambria, Alexisonfire, Bear vs. Shark, Give Up The Ghost, Black Cross, Armor for Sleep, and now...The Fall of Troy. I need to get their album. thank you APS, for introducing them to me.:).

That's also awesome, APS.

No school becasue of the snow? Youre in Virginia right? How bad did you get hit?

EDIT: Who is RQ?

i_mine_cor 03-01-2005 07:37 PM

So just how spiffy was this joint? I know there are a few good writers and a lot of others disappoint, but they're here for help. The good writers aren't encouraged by the new kids, and are offered very little help with their songs. The new kids might get a few good crits but soon they just turn and feed off eachothers crits until I can't get to the end of a thread without getting sick. I wouldn't mind getting rid of some horrid users and getting more good writers, but that still doesn't help me a whole lot with my lyrics and poems. I find myself critting fewer and fewer bad songs (the ones that need crits the most) and the good songs are only receiving praise and I don't think my reinforcing that is going to help the artist unless they're really unsure about their work. Few people seem to be growing. The past two songs APS posted I didn't crit because I can't tell him where there's an error and it's nothing I can suggest to add to his art that wouldn't dilute it with my writing/opinion. Seems like a catch 22.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 03-01-2005 07:57 PM

Myself, I don't care about a huge crit. If someone could point out a spot that just seems awkward or off (even a grammar error), that would be all I need. I'm not a big self promoter. The new kids are the ones in need of in depth crits. The thing is, most of them haven't learned to take criticism and would rather just get lots of praise. Most songs, I just find to be too generic to even want to crit. Every song has the same basic problems too. We have "nice guys" around here just giving out praise and not even trying to help make their songs better. If we have people keep doing that, no one will improve. I'd suggest that everyone just toughen up your crits and start being a little mean. That should weed out who we don't want on the boards (the kids who don't learn from the criticism, just argue back) and maybe make them a better place to learn about song writing and a friendly place in general.

Permanent Solution 03-01-2005 08:03 PM

^I had the best nice guy approach if you remember my crits.

theredwonder 03-01-2005 08:14 PM

I only bother critting songs that are average and show potential. Otherwise it's pointless.

Any other cases i just leave comments.

Permanent Solution 03-01-2005 08:16 PM

But you rarely critted my son...oh.

:upset:

theredwonder 03-01-2005 08:24 PM

Your's either fell into the

- Too good to bother critting

or

- Too obscure (in a "good" way) for me to understand

categories :)

Nightvision 03-02-2005 01:57 PM

I_mine_cor and APS brought up a very good point.

I've always tried to maintain a happy medium when critting - if a song is bad, I'll tell someone. I've given out plenty of 1s and 2s over my time here, but at the same time, I'll also point out where they suck and what I feel they can do to improve it. If they respond well, then I'll +rep them and make an effort to crit their songs in future. If they get narked and start getting funny, then they get neg repped and I won't touch them with a bargepole.

What upsets me is when you see the guys (and they are about) that come on here, follow the rules, give three or four good crits to people, and then post their song only to watch it slide down the first page with no crits... THOSE are the songs we really need to aim for, because chances are, they are the decent guys that will stick around.

theredwonder 03-02-2005 02:01 PM

Yeah, i know how they feel :hint:

But seriously i understand what you're talking about. There are plenty of users that don't post much, but when they do post a song make sure they give out a fair amount of crits in return. Yet still their song falls short.

It's wrong, wrong i tell you. But life's like that, and we all know that the internet = life.
