I've got an idea of vaguely what to expect; I've heard Calculating Infinity, and enjoy the Irony is a Dead Scene EP.
The Dillinger Escape Plan - 4:07 Okay, it starts off with gentle, acoustic guitar, which I wasn't expecting. Electric soon starts playing in the background. It sounds odd (like something normal, but slightly corrupted), in the way that most Dillinger stuff does, though I like the drumming. After a short break, the rock riff of the GNR song is played fast and hard, and distorted, and the singer (I don't know which one it is) starts the screaming/shouting vocals associated with Dillinger. I love the clash of styles - the rock'n'roll rhythm played fast and distorted, and with TDEP's manic vocals. I get the feeling I shouldn't be enjoying it, but I am. The solo sounds as though it was pulled off effortlessly, despite also sounding complex. Then, after a last shout of "my fucking Michelle", there's some fade out noise to end the song on. 8/10. Like I said, I really enjoyed the style clash. Songs: Fantomas - Page 29 (30 second "song" from debut album) Thrice - The Melting Point of Wax (melodic hardcore - best if listened to with lyrics) |

Ok.. everyone brags about Thrice and says they are amazing but I really don't get what is the big deal about them. So I figured I'd give them another try by listening to the song Bartender recommended.
The Melting Point of Wax - Thrice Ok, It starts off with some pretty good guitar playing and also it's pretty grooving. Then we go to the lyrics, the guy's vocals aren't that great, but the beat behind him is pretty good so I'm flowing. Now it's going into a chorus and it sounds decent. Back to the verse, I don't like this guys voice that much. A bridge, nothing that special here. I like the line "there is a promise of safety" very nice lyrically but vocally it's bothering me. Ok we had a long break from the chorus and now we are back in it. The outro was pretty good. Hm. It's not that I don't like it, it's just that in my opinion it wasn't amazing and as good as people say they are. Maybe I should try some stuff from IOS? 6.5/10 My Songs: Gatsby's American Dream - Counterfeit Language (Progressive Punk) Christopher O'Riley - Karma Police (Radiohead Piano Cover) |
It's the only Thrice song I really like, I don't really see what's so good about them either. I just really love that song, for the lyrics and the shout of "Screaming up to me" in the second verse. In other songs, his voice gets on my nerves as well.
This isn't me calling dibs by the way, for anyone else wishing to have a go. |
yeah, I'll take one on while I can, might not be on too much for a while now... probably a good thing for me though

Why won't you?

Gatsby's American Dream - Counterfeit Language
Starts with a punk riff and a punk beat that stops for a moment with small tom break. The song is definately more interesting than the average punk music...with some sudden tempo changes and a bass player that doesn't just play along with the guitars. Good production and vocal harmonies. That said, I applaud them for doing different things structure-wise. I've just never been a fan of punk music ingeneral...however I like the slower melodic part of the song near the end. Nothing I would buy...but definately better than most punk. 7/10 Christopher 'O Riley - Karma Police I really enjoyed this one. I've always loved the sound of classical influenced piano...it's a totally different song now than the anthem that Radiohead wrote. It's much more free flowing, especially with the vocal lines played on piano. Definately a cool listen....it gives room for imagination too, as you try to visualize what other pop songs would sound like if they were played by a classically trained pianist. Although comparing this is really foolish, I like this version better than the original, which is one of Radioheads most overrated songs anyway. 8/10 My songs: dEUS - Instant Street Lamb - Transfatty Acid The Tea Party - Walking Wounded Dead Can Dance - The Lotus Eaters |
I'm actually going to war on the moon.
Nah, I had lots of spare time over the last month and a bit, but things will probably get busy again soon and this will have to take a back seat... But then again, knowing me, I'll probably be on here just as much as usual :P Also.. this FL is now reopened to all, I probably dont have time to get the whole song and review it tonight. |
Oh well, Orb took it while writing that out..
And I have 2 of those songs (and havent listened to either of them much at all), so maybe I do have time.. |
The Tea Party - Walking Wounded
I'm listening through headphones and I think this is a poor quality mp3 :/ but oh well. Quick chanty intro, with a middle eastern reed instrument thing.. and pizzicato strings. Vocals come in almost straight away, It has a straightforward rock sound, except there are some strings, a choir, and few ethnic instruments along for the ride. It's standard structure makes it somewhat predictable, and the singer is nearly constantly singing, taking up too much space.. until about 3:30 where its all instrumental for a bit. Theres some more singing towards the end, but it's not too dense then. It's a fairly average song, the only thing that really stands out to me is the extra instruments.. I know its not a nice thing to say, but it reminded me of Nickelback. I've only heard a few Tea Party songs, they sounded better than this, and I know they aren't all the same like Nickelback :/ It's probably why I hardly listen to this anyway. 5/10 ________________________ John Butler Trio - big 5 track thing, details on previous page Blur - Good Song - Brit pop Battles - Tras 2 - blippy math rock (their only non-boring song) |

Blur - Good Song - 3.08
Another band i've never really understood is blur when ever you think you have them sussed they completely throw you. Anyways I haven't heard any of their newer stuff so i'm looking forward to this. The song kicks in straight away with a pretty basic drum beat and an amazing hypnotising guitar riff over the top. It almost reminds me off a music box. The vocals kick in properly at about 0:34, nothing special going on vocally. Then a basic but fitting spacey solo come's in. One thing I quite dislike is the backing vocals in the chorus it makes it seem quite cheesy to me. The vocals then take a different turn, almost sounding out of tune at some points. The song continues on with the same underlying riff and drum pattern. Overall interesting but nothing that would encourage me to buy the cd 5/10 My recommendations: Ludovico Einaudi - The Waves ( Classical Piano) Axis Of Perdition - To Walk The Corridors Of Hell (Techno Black Metal) I strongly recommend this, even if you generally dislike black metal just give this a try its not as necr0 or kvlt as some stuff :p Porcupine Tree - Blackest Eyes |
*bump*
If anyone's having trouble trying to find the waves by einaudi ,then its because on most of his albums it goes under the italian name of le onde. Sorry if that caused any confusion. :) |
getting something now

My fault I should have remembered :)

its all good, I still didnt find the waves. getting the other 2 though

Porcupine Tree - Blackest Eyes
Octaves of the intro, sounds alright. Feedback builds.. then BLAM, an RATM like riff blast, this is unlike the other Porcupine Tree songs I've heard. I wasn't expecting that. 0:54 Now this is like what I know of PT, rock with acoustic guitars and clean singing. It seems fairly easy to listen to, though not as melodic and welcoming as the other songs I know. Into the chorus I guess, the singers vocal line makes it sound wrong, its like Coldplay with some heavy guitars every now and then... The vocal harmony for the last line of the chorus seems way out of place. Then a bridge and the same chorus again. 2:45 brings the return of the ratm riff. Then from 3:15 is a really warm ambient keyboard bit, this is nice, singer sings the verse over it and I realized its just the verse without guitars or drums. Then more of the heavy riff and it ends soon after. It's not bad, but I dont like this song as much as others I've heard by them. Its the vocals that take the shine off it, I tried listening with vocal removal and it did sound better. If they changed the melodies around a bit, I probably would have liked it more. 6.5/10 ____________________ John Butler Trio - big live story thing - look back a few pages Substitute Inc. - The Chase - Scene 3 and 4 (one song spread over two tracks) - underwater progressive trippy-disco sci-fi rock (get it from me, Blueser57 on soulseek) Battles - Tras 2 - blippy math rock |

George Baker Selection - Little Green Bag
This is a good song. Starts off with a cool little acoustic riff, which is cool indeed. I like the drums as well in the intro, they were cool. The vocals are quite nifty too; not great, but they fit the music well. I don't like when he raises his voice too much, though. And it's nice to see horns in the song. The bassline is very cool as well. The solos, whilst not a shredder (aw) are d amn cool. The key change is good as well, it saves the song from boredom (funnily enough, I was just thinking how boring the song was getting about 3 seconds before that key change). It's a cool song, but I wouldn't get excited about it. 7.5/10. My songs: Dragonforce - Disciples of Babylon (Thrash-esque Power Metal) Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time - Gerudo Valley (Classical/Spanish Flamenco kind of stuff) Spinal Tap - Sex Farm (British Rock) and, if you like: WWF - Mr. Perfect's theme (The coolest wrestling theme, ever) I urge you to check out the Gerudo Valley theme, even if you don't write a review about it. It is an amazing song. |

Gerudo Valley 2.25
Wow, this song brigns back many gaming memories and nostalgia. I actually have the game sound track, I got it with a video game magazine subscription (I was in grade school). The overall song is okay nothing I would listen to on my own will. It is also hard to pay attention to as by it's purpose I zone out. I don't like the cheesy horns but I will say the guitar parts are very good. 7/10 Sleepy Bonzo Dog Band - My Pink Half Of The Drain Pipe (Weird 60's Pop) The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Take Five (The song that got me into Jazz) Fugazi - Version (Art Rock) |

Oops. my bad *edits*

dont worry, its gone through already, not like my songs were easy to find/get anyway, plus I'm not home to be able to send them out on slsk or whatever.
no hard feelings |
I thought it was about one of the songs I picked was too long. I did try to find the songs you listed...aside from the Blur song I couldn't find any. Limewire is pretty limited...but the only server that works for my computer.
Anyway...I deleted my post...that's a good punishment. |
um whats going on here
*bump* |
To be honest I don't know for sure either what I did wrong. But apperantly I did something...anyway, it don't matter anymore.
So much for being assertive. |
It's just that you have to review a song suggested by the last reviewer in his last review, not just any songs suggested in the thread. I hope you carry on taking part, I want recommendations.
|
Well my songs are next, and it's been a good day.
|
I'm downloading one of them, but I don't usually call dibs until I actually have the song. It's coming though, unless someone else wants to jump in before me.

Must be an unwritten rule then. |
I guess it was, in this thread. Sorry, I suppose we just kinda took it for granted.
Okay, I'll take proper dibs now. |
Dave Brubeck - Take Five - 5:26
Starts of with just percussion, soon joined by a cool little repeating piano melody though. Then, soon after, we get a really nice, mellow saxophone? playing the lead of the song. When the sax drops off, the drums become the main focus of the song, whilst the piano continues its repeating melody in the background. The solo lasts quite a while (up to about 4:20), until the piano begins to quiet down a bit, and the drums resume cymbal-tapping (and calm down on all other fronts) as the wind instrument (whatever it is) reenters. Kind of a difficult song to review, especially knowing as little jazz as I do. I liked the main melody the lead instrument was following (before and after the drum solo). The drum solo itself felt a bit overlong, but when it was happening it didn't sound forced, it sounded quite natural, quite organic, which was good. 8/10. I definitely enjoyed it, I'm just not sure why. Songs: Fantomas - Page 29 (30 second "song" from debut album) Bruford - Five G (Jazz/fusion) Massive Attack - Teardrop, Risingson or Angel (trip-hop) |
Massive Attack-Teardrop
Trippy stuff, kind of like the Flaming Lips. Not really my style but I did kind of like it. It kind of sets a relaxing mood, kind of ambient and stuff. I'm not crazy about most female singers (unfortuantly), but other than that I thought it was a cool song worth checking out if you are into weird indie stuff like this. 7/10 Song: Atmosphere- Gods Bathroom Floor (underground hip hop) |
I'm going to bed soon, just a bump for others
