Google the Dean Pace Bass, then you will see the concept behind this.
The Pace Bass looks nothing like your one. The Pace looks like an electric double bass made with as little wood as possible. Yours has a body, and a well-shaped body at that. |
Right, so I did not get as much done as I would have liked, but one of the trickier parts is now complete, i.e. the routing of the pickup cavities.
On to the pictures. An overview shot without pickups. An overview shot with pickups. And finally...
An angled shot with pickups and the bridge. |
Lookin sweet, we need a full body shot with the hardware though. What's your plan for the tail? Zip it off with a bandsaw and hand shape to match the body?
|
Man that is extremely HOT.
Keep up the good work man! |

Wish I had a bandsaw :thumb: Not sure at this point, potentially thinking of a small fishtail of sorts, to give it the illision of extra length. |

But the Pace isn't an electric double bass. It is pretty much a bass guitar that happens to be upright, like Hobbes' bass. In terms of scale and radius, they are both much more similar to a bass guitar than an upright. |
Great Job!!!
I wnat to know where the electrical wire(Pickups) contact with? |
Great Job!!!

The pickups will be wired into two 3-way switches that will allow me to switch them from Series/Parallel/Single Coil. |
Did you route the pick up cavities by hand
|

Yep, made a template first then routed by hand. |

Yummy!

How are going to finnish it? I would use tung oil or teak oil, it would look sick with an oil finish!:thumb:

I am going to use danish oil wich is pretty much tung oil with some others thrown in. Sorry to all that this is taking so long, its really been sitting on the back burner for a while now. I am hoping to be able to get back into it again. |
haha you have everyone on the edge of their seats man
|
I have started working on this project again after a bit of a leave of absence.
I will however only be taking photos when there is significant change, as currently I am doing some of the final shaping anf sanding so very little difference is noticable. |
When i started reading this thread, i thought '10 pages, he must've finished it by now' now you are gonna have me checking it every day until its done!!!.
Awesome job like . . :chug: |
can't wait for this to be finished, looks like a stirling job so far mate :D :thumb:

This thread has been giving me blue balls for months

Bit on the top horn going to the neck, it sort of goes differently than the curve of the wood. Is that meant to be like that? And seriously, i love the shape, if the end was sanded down to match the main curve, that'd be even better. I'd love a custom guitar like that. I think it'd look nicer as string through, but i guess thats difficult? |

The end has been sanded down, I was keeping that untill I needed to get rid of it as I was contemplating doing a fish tail of sorts. As for string through, I also considered that, however with the bass being 36 scale, I was not 100% certain that there would be sufficient string length to cover both string through and the 36 scale. |
When we gunna see some more progress Shawn. I wanna see this bass finished.
|
its really hot... get cookin!
|
I've been longing to see some new updates
|
Okay, work has re-commenced again on this, as in I am no longer being lazy with it.
I appologise for the lack of photos, but that is due to my main computer havng had its motherboard blow up on me, but there will be some soon. Right, general progress that has been made: 1. The tail of the bass has been removed and rounded. 2. The nut has been sanded down to its rough finished shape, i.e. It fits into the slot, but need to have the grooves drilled and final finishing done. What still needs to be done: 1. Hole drilled for the input jack 2. Holes drilled for pots and switches 3. Holes drilled for the bridge 4. Final finshing sanding 5. Radiusing the neck 6. Finishing with Danish Oil (A mixture of about 80% Tung oil and some others) 7. Shielding of electronics cavity 8. Installment of electronics and wiring After that it should hopefully be a case of stringing it up and playing. I will aslo have to begin looking around for a stand of some sort that I can use for this baby, and the attaching a mounting plate of bracket on the back of the bass. After its all finished I think I am going to have to make a case for it as it won't fit into a standard hard case, so that should be a bit of fun. Damn thing weights 6KG's at present (13.2 pounds) so there is no way you could really string it up like a normal bass, besides the control cavity being in the wrong location. So sorry for lack of photos, but there shall be I promise. |
wow your almost done with this baby. When do you think it will be done?
