That's cool. My brother's girlfriend got him something like that when she went to the Bahamas. His is probably not as authentic.

The Congos cd is fantastic. "Fisherman" and 'The Wrong Thing" are probably my favorite songs on the album. I don't have msn though, sorry.

Zion Gates 10-09-2005 09:46 PM

I haven't listened to a lot of Dancehall. I have a Barrington Levy compilation and in the bios, you've described him as a dancehall artist. There's a couple songs on the compilation I would agree on them being dancehall (including his most popular song), but the rest I wouldn't describe as such.

But maybe my definition is wrong. What is a good definition for dancehall, please? :)

Dancehall is all about homophobic, sexist, medicore rappers using their Jamaican image to make money on songs consisting of sub-par rhymes over copied beats. There, I said it. Come on, someone had to say it.

Buju Banton has got some flow though. Sizzla has delievered some nice tunes aswell.

i agree 100%..i hate walking into a store, looking under reggae and you see sh't like elephant man (sometimes even shaggy  ) roots becoming taken over, worst of all by c'rap

El_Shiznit 10-10-2005 11:27 PM

In the reggae section at my local store, I have 50% Bob Marley, 40% Shaggy, and 10% everything else.

KayaMon 10-11-2005 03:34 AM

I must say thats the best definition for dancehall that ive ever heard. Thanks Sweboy.

Bring it back to the roots mon :thumb:

Has anybody heard Sinéad O'Connor's Throw Down Your Arms? It's an LP of twelve surprisingly convincing covers of all the greats (recorded at Tuff Gong with Sly and Robbie, so it works). Burning Spear, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, she really picked the right tracks, let's put it that way. Considering what it is, I'm really amazed at how much I like this record.

Havn't heard it...is it a recent LP? On the subject of age, i havnt been hearing many new roots reggae. The most recent bands i can think of are Bendouin Soundclash, Slightly Stoopid (anything off skunk records pretty much). I remember there being a reggae band on the forums i forget the name though. So anyone hear any newer roots bands?

JonM 10-16-2005 03:06 PM

Yeah, it just came out. The more I listen, the more it works for me.

so its a chick singing right? where did you get it? what songs are covered?

JonM 10-16-2005 03:27 PM

Err, it's Sinéad O'Connor, it's not just some "chick," but yeah.

I got it on Amazon, and it's at every CD store I've been to, plus iTunes.

Tracklist:

Jah Nuh Dead
Marcus Garvey
Door Peep
He Prayed
Y Mas Gan
Curly Locks
Vampire
Prophet Has Arise
Downpressor Man
Throw Down Your Arms
Untold Stories
War
TO EL_SHIZNIT: do you know when the new bad brains dvd or c-d is coming out, and if they are planning to do a tour?

El_Shiznit 10-17-2005 09:12 AM

I haven't heard anything new for a while. I don't think a release was ever set. And whenever it was released, they did plan on touring.

JonM 10-19-2005 11:28 AM

Two things:

1. I'm glad I discovered that Man In The Hills and Dry And Heavy have been rereleased on one CD. I made the discovery too late about Marcus Garvey/Garvey's Ghost.

2. The extended Heart Of The Congos may have been the best musical purchase of my life.

Is Dry and Heavy good? I was going to buy Man In The Hills by itself, but I can look out for the double cd I suppose.

Zion Gates 10-19-2005 06:36 PM

i havnt heard it actually..but satta massagana was their first c-d, and has their most popular songs

They're both amazing ("Throw Down Your Arms" is on Dry And Heavy), and, at least on iTunes, it's the same price to buy both on the dual CD, if you're savvy enough to know about it, as it is to buy ONE of them alone.

Zion Gates 10-19-2005 06:43 PM

yeah, its on dry & heavy. I have another burning spear c-d called spear burning, it pretty much a singles & rarities c-d, and it has this amazing version of throw down your arms with a toaster, toasting on top of it its great stuff

magicbus 10-19-2005 09:28 PM

That's cool then, cause I love Man In The Hills. I'll try to get the two disc thing.

KayaMon 10-20-2005 04:05 PM

Hey everybody I was wondering if one of you cats with the Heart of the Congos album could send it to me. I'd really like to hear it but I cant seem to find it anywhere. Peace
