I actually don't like doing it. I weigh the result of it. If I can ban someone to get a point across I do a short ban, like with the dude that made the spam post here. If I can ban someone cus they are an idiot and keep them away from good users then I ban them for a week or so.
Is it one of those things that look more fun than they really are?

I'm gonna have some basic band recordings tommorrow.

yea, its really a pain in the butt, ya ban someone, they KNOW what they did but they still have to play innocent and act all stupid.

Looking forward to your recordings man!

Im gonna order this http://www.americanmusical.com/item--i-BEH-PMH1000.html

tomm to pair it with some 12" floor monitors. All we need is vocals in our practice space so, according to moaner., it should do just fine.

but ZAKATH....

you got to ban zakath...

even if you became the world's worst mod, that fact alone would make everyone non-resident of the pit say "keep him".

as offensive as i'm sure you find his "kenny boy" comments ("Kenny boy should be demodded, he banned me") it's good to know someone has the balls to stick up to him.

Do you have a little "ban" button next to people's names?

that one is 2x300w, not 300w. You will have to watch you volume levels and not crank it up.

but seriously, you'll be having the master volume on 0.5, 600w inside is a big number. And if you ever gigged it, you wouldn't be using monitors for FOh speakers anyway, so it wouldn't be a problem.

black_fire_137 03-01-2005 10:33 PM

Well, since this is on page 8, I suppose I'll go ahead and post something in it... mainly because it's likely to get overlooked, and I'm not one to seek attention.

Name's Derek, 20 in June, resident of Arkansas (I say this because I've noticed a distinct lack of folks from the states on here -- that is, as far as I've seen). I've been a musician of some sort since around age 3 (age 7 if you're talking about "serious" musicianship). I'm the lead guitarist (insofar as I am at least halfway capable) of a band called Unfinished Business (don't wrack your brains, you've never heard of us), and we're facing the imminent loss of our (original) drummer, since he's going to basic training this summer... Plus he joined a fraternity and another of our members joined a sorority, so for some reason, neither of them seem to have much time for the band these days... Anyway, I'm really new to this place, and I really don't know anyone... also, if any of you regulars notice me being an @$$ anywhere on here or anything like that, let me know, I'm generally not a bad guy...

KKKKKocaine 03-04-2005 03:28 PM

Now you will help me make a large decision, bearing in mind that any opinions or statements conflicting with my opinion will be disregarded as conjecture.

Now I've come to realise that 3 days a week in college, I enjoy 2 and a half hours of lessons a week, the rest I do not enjoy/do not want to learn.
Such as, MIDI Sequencing, Sound Manipulation, Music In Context e.t.c.
The subjects I love are sound recording and music industry(does it show?)

Now I'm still in my first year of the course, I started it back in september of last year.
Now since being at college, my chance to practice drums have declined heavily, I maybe get time for one hour a week. Because of me travelling to and from college, I can't get a job in the evenings and if I got one on the weekend, I'd be hard pressed to find time to have the vocal lessons I want to pay for.

As for my current educational level, I'm ahead of my entire sound recording class by a couple of months from studying at home, and I'm far ahead in my music industry class also.

The idea that's frequented my mind is this.

I drop out of my course, I do know enough to home record on my own and troubleshoot my problems, I learn easily from books so any advancements can be made from books fairly well, also my drum teacher took the same subject and has a large recording set up and has offered to help me with any recording problems I have.
I get a job, working maybe 4 days a week, monday, thursday, friday and sunday, stacking shelves or some other menial task for 6 hours a day.
On an average wage, this gives me 96 english pounds a week, or 384 pounds a month. (Assuming 4 pounds an hour)

Now working in my local Asda, I could aquire an early shift, 8am-2pm, this leaves me with plenty of evening time to work with my band, practice singing, practice drumming, and have vocal lessons.
Now to aid with drum practice, I would use my first two months of wages to purchase a Roland TD3 (I enjoy electric kits far more than acoustic) and this would allow silent practice for days when my mum is ill*, sleepless nights* and for any other situations.

*She's ill alot
*These Occur alot

I would have the finances to get vocal lessons and I would also have the time for them.
I would then split my wage, prehaps 40/60, 40% a week staying in my bank account for future use or emergencies. The other 60% being for personal use, microphones, band practices e.t.c.
I'd also be purchasing books to study in the realms of sound recording.

The aims from this.
A) More time with my band, more finances for cd printing, going into studios, merch printing, website hosting, paying for overheads e.t.c.
B) Improved drumming ability, I do enjoy drumming and It would be nice to be at a level in which I could consider doing session work in the future.
C) Improving my vocals to aid the band as a better musician.

As you can see, from my band 101 thread, I know what it takes to make a band, and I have the drive to do this. So what are your personal opinions on this?

moaner 03-04-2005 03:56 PM

well dude, its a big step. Most people take it later than you. but, what you're basically proposing is to quit your job to concentrate on your band. Although, in your case, its not that simple.

Think about what you have. what, 6 A*-C GCSEs, or something like that? Well, its not going to get you a job in a nuclear power station.

without your BTEC, you'd be without recoridng qualifications. any job you did try to get would lead to the awkward question of "If you're so great... why'dya drop out?". IUn fact, if you ever did go into recording, you'd probably end up self employed. You think a bank is gonna lend ya £2000 for your studio and the first few months of cashflow? I am looking to get an a in GCSE business studies this year, so i know a bit about this, and i tell you this- even with a sound business plan, a good idea, and support, they're not gonna lend you more than half the money. and they're certaintly not gonna lend money to you before you're at least 21+.

Think about where your band is going. is being in """full time*""" education holding you back? i.e., you're ready to go on a tour of the north west, but you can't cause you got college on monday? I gather the rest of BTH are probably also at school.

also, think about it. Do you really want to spend half your time stacking shelves for pennies? Its very rock n roll, to be stuck in your deadbeat job, but its NOT very fun.

Also, its not just you. I gather you and your mum don't have a fairytale relationship as it is**, and you say she's often ill. Would dropping out of college cause her more worry than its worth? You're not gonna afford your own place working for £4 an hour, you're gonna have to stay "at home".

Also, remember, its all your choice, harry-luke.*** If you think that college is going nowhere and you might get somehwere with your band/recording, you fucking go for it man. Just don't forget, you're in for a long slog.

*come on man, you work 3 days a week. lap it up.

**who does?

***I swear your name is luke, yet i'd also swear its harry. you hear me?

I bought a Behringer V-Amp 2 the other day, and the footswitch doesn't seem to do anything :(.

moaner 03-04-2005 04:44 PM
I bought a Behringer V-Amp 2 the other day, and the footswitch doesn't seem to do anything :(.
are you sure?

Plug it in, in the jack on the far left, labelled "footswitch". It should scroll A-E on tyhe patch your on. remember pressing "up" when you're on E does nothing, same with down on A.

gaslight 03-04-2005 04:57 PM

Yeah, I plug it into the footswitch jack, then say I'm on like, Bank C, I will press down on the footswitch and it will change to Bank B for a second, then go back to C.

Now that I have unplugged the whole thing and re-plugged it in, it works. Weird.

Trigger_003 03-04-2005 06:20 PM

What Moaner said is very true. Think about it KKKKKocaine... the certificate(s) are going to give you much more of a boost in the future in terms of employment and this is probably a key factor. And those classes that you don't enjoy, surely they will help you if you go into recording or something - regardless of the satisfaction levels (or lack of them) you're getting from them now.

He's right about you not being able to buy a house on that kind of wage too. When your mum is sick, will she want you to look after her more seeing that you are not at college?

How much longer does this course go for? How much have you payed for already? In the scheme of things it's most-likely worth putting that extra bit of effort in now to get furthur in the long-term.

How much can the rest of your band put in and is it a long-term thing for them to commit that-much-time+? How much do they put in at the moment? Seriously. Imagine you do quit the course and free up all this time, but then some other members of your band can only put in a couple of hours of what you've freed up. Then you're kinda stuck, eh?

And lastly for this post: Have you asked if you can get work to a more advanced level in those subjects that you are ahead in? The majority of the time, your teachers/whatever are willing to put in that little bit more effort for a student if they ask. Even if you don't think it's possible, there may be a way so ask.

Hope that's useful :thumb:

gaz12369 03-04-2005 07:48 PM

About your situation KKKKKocaine, why not send in some applications/demos to some smaller (or larger?) stuidos and see if they'l give you a part time job or something. That beats spending time in asda, even if you get paid less, or nothing at all. But on the assumption they pay you to do ****ty jobs like load tapes and make tea, you get your foot in the door, you dont have to work in asda, you still do your music course, you still earn money. If they start to 'promote' you, and you do more hours and stuff, then think about dropping out of your collage? Even if you stick both through the three (or two?) years, then you get a qualification, you get lots of work experiance, you get lots of demo material, you have an AWESOME CV.

It still doesnt solve the problem of playing with the band, but you should try to do as much as you can in the space you have anyway. If you get like 6 hours free, get as much of the band as you can doing an intense session, and maybe even recording, so your getting more practice at the same time.

Im in the same sort of situation, im wondering if 6th form is worth doing, but i mean this year has gone so fast theres not much point in giving up now, it wont be long till im out, and i can scab off the parents to buy things i want. During the summer i plan to get a good band going, and try recording a demo, as im planning on getting some recording gear, lol, rate if you fancy:

Behringer B1 condensor >

Behringer 1622 >

M-Audio Delta 66 >

PC (which i allready have, and its rather good)

But yeah, i think its worth getting qualifications...its just easier than spending 3 years doing crappy jobs which make you not want to do it anymore, with the qualifications you might start on something better?

Just my thoughts anyway, if it didint make sense, its because its late:D

what ypou think of the rep system change, ken/everybody?

Trigger_003 03-05-2005 04:26 PM

Moaner is BACK! :D

I don't know. It's kinda good, kinda bad. I didn't like the old system in that so many people got worked up over it. Some people neg'd for no reason at all which would make others angry, stuff like that. Then again, it was nice to get the positive comments that users wouldn't generally put in a new post. They say it's now going to be based on how good a poster you are rather than popularity, and sure, it might at the moment. But once people start getting repping abilities again it'll just turn back to the way it was, won't it?

I'm thinking since stars will seem so far away for so many people, they might start doing useless posts again...

gaslight 03-05-2005 04:32 PM

I don't know why people care about stars at all. At least it's one step closer to no rep system clagging up the boards.

gaslight 03-05-2005 06:14 PM

I don't feel like plugging everything in at the moment to find out but...

With my Behringer V-Amp 2 right, I can go like...

Guitar --> Digitech / Boss pedals --> V-Amp 2 --> Recording Device.

And that works?

My instinct is that I will but I'm quite comfortable in the chair at the moment.

gaslight 03-06-2005 08:17 PM

Aww :(. Get better. Getting a cold with winter coming on?

Trigger_003 03-07-2005 12:09 AM

A lot of people at school are sick at the moment. I was one of the few that didn't have a cold, so somebody kindly passed one on to me.
Spent most of today sleeping so I should be right soon. :)

Btw, like the new(ish) avatar Gaslight :thumb:. I used to love that show lol.

gaslight 03-07-2005 12:51 AM

I love it, I hope I can find DVD's of it. Trent is awesome. I used to have this avatar wayyy back over a year ago.
