The Patient

Hey, I know this is kind of a throwback, but I kind of wanted to get this forum back on track... you know... theories on the songs?
One of my all time favorites is The Patient off of Lateralus. I love the guitar intro and the drums throughout, but I've been thinking a lot about the lyrics:

03 the patient •

A groan of tedium escapes me,
Startling the fearful.
Is this a test? It has to be,
Otherwise I can't go on.
Draining patience, drain vitality.
This paranoid, paralyzed vampire act's a little old.

But I'm still right here
Giving blood, keeping faith
And I'm still right here.

Wait it out,
Gonna wait it out,
Be patient (wait it out).

If there were no rewards to reap,
No loving embrace to see me through
This tedious path I've chosen here,
I certainly would've walked away by now.
Gonna wait it out.

If there were no desire to heal
The damaged and broken met along
This tedious path I've chosen here
I certainly would've walked away by now.

And I still may ... (sigh) ... I still may.

Be patient.
I must keep reminding myself of this.

And if there were no rewards to reap,
No loving embrace to see me through
This tedious path I've chosen here,
I certainly would've walked away by now.
And I still may.

Gonna wait it out.

I have a theory: This song is about Maynard's mother, who was a cancer patient for 27 years (this might also be the reason for the title "10,000 days (27 years is 9,855 days... almost 10,000.)) ANy thoughts?

lucky luciano 05-05-2006 02:40 PM

Maynard must have been trippin balls when he wrote Rosetta Stoned. Those aren't the kind of lyrics a guy writes when he is sober, and where did you hear these things about his mother?

kurrpt 05-05-2006 02:50 PM

what things?

WAK (while killing) 05-05-2006 03:00 PM

I heard that 10,000 days and Wings Pt1, and the song Judith are all about Maynards mother Judith Marie Keenan, as for The Patient, I think its about Maynard overcoming his heroine addiction.

I'd put a big vote in on that. That makes a lot of sense

WAK (while killing) 05-05-2006 03:28 PM

The bongos at the end are a really nice finish to the song.

I agree with your reading of the lyrics and I love the drumming too, probs my fave performance from Danny.

bigdumbholden 05-05-2006 06:58 PM

"Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father. Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended. It's time, now, my time, now. Give me my wings."

Some of the lyrics seem kind of dumb to me (parts of Rosetta Stoned, and then some of The Pot), but there is some good stuff in there. Wings for Marie/10,000 Days are too good. I can't stop listening to this album. Seriously, like nonstop.
"Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father. Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended. It's time, now, my time, now. Give me my wings.".
I believe this line is a refrence to MJKs mother dieing, going to heaven, and demanding her dues for all the suffering she went through during the 10,000 days after her stroke, and for her faithfullness to religion (most likely the Catholic Church)

The rest of the album is good, but none of the other songs after Wings/10,000 days grab my atention right away. It took a few listens for me to start getting in to Lost Keys/Rosseta Stone, Intention, and Right in Two

omgwtfboogie 05-05-2006 07:30 PM

"Rosetta Stoned" is a hell of a song, with or without the concept in mind. The singing at the end is golden and is > you.

Listening to Jambi for the first time.

This solo is totally sick.

Doesn't have to be fast to be good....

Yeah it's cool that Adam solo'ed. I never thought I would hear a solo in Tool, that never seemed like their style since the older stuff, like Opiate.

Futuro 05-05-2006 08:29 PM
here be a random thot

What is worse than a tool fanboy? Someone who complains about tool fanboys.

Lunch 05-05-2006 08:30 PM

What's better than that? Using the ignore list.

Syncratic 05-05-2006 08:31 PM

I'm raising my 'spammers non-procreation fund' to a record 45 dollars and an apple-tini.

Please leave.

Daven 05-05-2006 08:32 PM

STFU Bob Jones!

Syncratic 05-05-2006 08:35 PM

You know all hope of loosing your virginity before middle age has been dashed when you need to carry on a conversation with yourself on different accounts on a message board.

Get accquianted with that blow-up doll, Bobby, I have a feeling that you're aren't seeing much else in that department.

I was asking where you got your info about his mother, and this heroin addiction. Do you have a link or something you could post? I've always thought that the patient was a song about faith, spoken by someone who is beginning to have doubts. I remember reading in an interview with maynard him say that he never got into drugs very much. He said that he had done them but was lucky enough to not be sucked down by them, but ya I was just curious about where you heard those things, cause I've heard so much bull**** about those guys it ain't even funny.

Syncratic 05-05-2006 08:53 PM

Maynard never had a herion addiction.

NP: Right in Two...I'm fucking loving this one, folks.

lucky luciano 05-05-2006 08:55 PM

Ya that and 10k days are probably my two favorite songs on the album right now

Syncratic 05-05-2006 08:58 PM

I loved the climax of '10,000 Days' when he mentions his mother's name.

My God, that was beautiful.

Daven 05-05-2006 09:02 PM

I love when he goes ''10,000 Days in the fire....'', its sooo good.

Spiritofmosa 05-05-2006 09:24 PM

ok so i was on the third listen last night.. listening to a tool album is like watching a movie, especially when browsing through the 3d album art. The album clocked about 75minutes but it seemed short to me.I also found the guitar too loud in contrast to the drums and vocals. 10000days is definately heavier than lateralus with songs like jambi and rosetta stoned and has the most emotional songs like wings of marie and 10000days. i try not to chuckle whenever i hear lipan conjuring especially when im wearing my earphones becasue it tickles my ears. Intension and right in two are amazing, i was happy when the distortion came in right in two.Viginti tres was petty scary
" THEEEE SYSSSSTEMMM"

Riva 05-05-2006 11:24 PM

Yeah, I was listening in the car again, and I must admit some songs are really growing on me. I have to start listening on the computer or in bed so I can put names to the songs.

csl316 05-06-2006 01:13 AM

ever since i bought this cd, i've just been in a damn good mood. i heard vicarious beforehand, but when i popped in the cd i had shivers for 7 minutes straight. which is one hell of a feeling

i love the variety on this album, from the ridiculously emotional (10,000 days) to the downright insane (rosetta stoned). maynard's all over the place and justin is amazing.. moreso than usual, yikes. and i cant say enough good things about danny

now it's time to gradually learn the whole album on guitar. just like Lateralus back in the day..

hey, i'm new, but i lurked like crazy for the past few months (all over the site, and i found some incredible music because of it so thanks to all)

so yes, hello.

/demands mad respect with my one whole post :smash:

Questions.....

Does anybody know how to save streaming audio, i.e. the live tracks from distortiononline?

Has anybody heard the Piano tribute to Tool?

If anyone can answer the first question, I'll be happy to share some of the piano songs.

Have a recording program? Have a mic input and a headphone jack on the front of your comp?

Plug it in to itself, press record on your program, press play on the distortion online thing.

Haha, well id settle for Reflecion,Pu**** or Third Eye aswell. If i got to see any of those,id be stoked.Or The Grudge, just to see that awesome scream Maynard does.

Adam Jones is GOD 05-06-2006 04:44 AM

I'm hoping that they'll play 3 radically different sets at each UK show. I can see Download being the same as Cochella.

Stoo 05-06-2006 04:51 AM

If the Glasgow set is better than Download I'll kill someone.

I gave up my Tool ticket to get a Download one.

repcak 05-06-2006 06:20 AM

this world is so unfai!!!

on 17th june Tool will play in austria (their only concert) on a festival and its expensive.

Futuro's way is the only way, you need a mic and a program like Audacity so you can record it from the site.

I'd love to hear those piano songs.

Turkish 05-06-2006 01:40 PM

5 Days till I get to see them, can't wait.
