I disagree, once again i will use soccer as an example for my argument
Soccer is also the simplest sport ever pretty much. Run around trying to kick a ball into the net, cant go offsides, cant use your hands, cant interfere with the goalie, and cant try to hurt another player. After you watch it for 30 minutes and 1 or 2 goals are scored and its basically just a bunch of guys running back and forth on a huge field, it gest boring so easily. |

I guess you're just unsalvagable. No sport has as much flair or style as basketball. And yet, you can still appreciate team play as well. |

Ease up on him, Chris. He's a New Yorker. You can't expect him to be THAT smart.

Haven't we had an argument about soccer before, trying to convince Ray that it wasn't the easiest thing in the world? And Chicago used to be somewhat of a Hockey town, didn't it? I mean, a long time ago when the Blackhawks were good. |

While soccer games can be boring (but then again in any sport a game can be just total crap and thusly boring, no sport is exempt from that in my opinion), the sheer excitment found in a high quality soccer game is far superior to that of most other sports. With the low point values, in a close game, especially between two rivals (and here in germany there are quite a few, dont forget the british primier league either, and such), if a goal is scored, even if its on a penalty, its beyond exciting. How much excitment do you really get from seeing someone sink a free throw in basketball? Next time you happen to notice one of the American networks playing an Arsenal vs. Manchester United soccer match (which at least in new jersey they show reruns of these fairly often), just watch it, and pick a side before the game starts to stand behind for the entire game, and you will see. It was just like when i watched the England vs. US game in may (i think it was may, the last couple months just wizzed by me and blurred together), we watched it with a bunch of people from the UK and Ireland, and it was sheer insanity, and also a great match, i was very impressed with the way the US played. This is also the reason I will probably be returning to germany for the world cup next year. EDIT: saw this after i posted
Ease up on him, Chris. He's a New Yorker. You can't expect him to be THAT smart.
I sure as hell am not from NY, i am from New Jersey, and don't you forget it. |
^ I am trying to go to Germany for the World Cup, too. Even if I only make it to one game or something, watching the games in pubs is soooo fun. Especially when your country is doing good.

I resent that. New Yorkers just like baseball, pretty much. The biggest names in the sports' history are synonymous with the location. |
i can see that this thread does just fine without me. i'm not needed anymore. I'll just go die now, thank you

If you do go, go to frankfurt, because then i can give you this information, which you should write down and save for a year. first off, the frankfurt stadium is real nice, ive seen the Frankfurt Eintracht play there before, great stuff, and the stadium will be used in the world cup. Secondly these are the pubs you need to go to to watch the games: 1) if a team playing is in anyway related to the UK or Ireland, go to MacGowan's pub to watch it, it is off the central area called the Zeil, if you go to the subway station named Konstabler Wache, you will see a sign on a street post that says "irish pub" and an arrow pointing, that is where you need to go. The one guy who works there, Patty, is insane, and they serve food there which also happens to be pretty good. 2) If a team playing is Australia, go to an irish pub in the area of Frankfurt called Sachsenhausen called "The Anglo Irish". Lot of aussies there, makes a real nice atmosphere. 3) if a germany game is on, just go right to the Zeil, they will have a huge screen set up outdoors, and beer stands all over the place. German soccer fans are amazing, so much fun being surrounded by them when a local team is playing. The celebration when the Frankfurt Eintracht got upgraded back into the Bundes Liga (the german equivalent of a premier league), it was the most amazing experience of my whole year in frankfurt. If any other team is playing, go where you desire. Hope to see you there next summer! |

I was talking about R.Blythe Eh, Cleveland, New York, they're one in the same.
That is where i go back to the original argument against basketball. You don't cheer one play (unless it's a buzzer-beater, obviously), you watch everything going on. Basketball is first and foremost a team sport, but in no other sport can one individual stand out within that context...I dunno, it's hard to explain why I love it so much. |

Word my sons. I am really bored right now. I was playing pool because I don't have to be in class until 3 but I finished my movie I was shooting and am now waiting. Any updates I should know about?

I don't know, but police basically cordoned off my town earlier...they found a car they think was involved in thursdays london bombings....
this sh!t is getting close to home :( |
I was talking about R.Blythe
Ah fair enough, sorry im just so used to people from europe thinking NJ is a part of NY, kinda sets me off a bit haha, no harm done though
See, you can't compare basketball and soccer...basket[ball is about sustained brilliance. You don't cheer one play (unless it's a buzzer-beater, obviously), you watch everything going on. Basketball is first and foremost a team sport, but in no other sport can one individual stand out within that context...I dunno, it's hard to explain why I love it so much.
The way i see it, you definitely can compare the two. They are both based upon the same basic principles, moving a ball from one end of the field to another and getting it into some sort of goal (which is how most sports are based upon). Difference being soccer uses the feet and basketball uses the hands. With the addition of a goal keeper though, soccer has that extra little added strategy needed in it, other than just being able to shoot on target. To say that soccer is not a team sport first and foremost would be completely wrong, if you have ever played a game of soccer, then you know this. However, are you trying to tell me that soccer players cannot stand out within that same context? Does the name Beckham ring a bell at all? Or lets go back a bit further in time, Pelé. See what I am gathering from this is that I like soccer for almost the exact same reasons you like basketball, however the thing that makes the hugest difference is the point system. With the big difference one point can make in soccer, it makes the points that are scored that much more exciting. Although I have to admit, if you would have asked me to put sports in order of me liking them before i came to Europe to study, I would have definitely had soccer very low on the list, basketball would have been above it for sure, but still quite low because i was never into it. However due to there being no Baseball here, and the European NFL league just being more painful than the NY Giants to watch (which is impressive), your options for sports on television end up being pretty much Soccer, Snooker, Golf, and Tennis. The european atmosphere surely got the best of me, and befriending all the irish lads here didnt help much either because they are into soccer more than anyone i have ever met is into any sport. |

I wish I had a pool table. |
I never attacked soccer, I was just defending basketball is all.
And yes I know about David Beckham, I think we can safely call him the most overrated and overhyped athlete of the past 100 years. |
Nowadays he is, but he will always be remembered for the free kick against greece that got us into the 02 WC..
big deal, the greek team always sucked :p /Greek |

I've never heard of him, that may be ignorant, but sureley that means he's not the most overhyped... |
Huh?
With all due respect, Derek Jeter never, EVER generates the same kind of hype David Beckham does. David Beckham is so well known, Americans who can't name one soccer player can name this guy. Didn't some nativity scene depict him as Joseph? He gets Michael Jordan-level hype but he's no Michael Jordan.
Nowadays he is, but he will always be remembered for the free kick against greece that got us into the 02 WC..
Or the blown PK in the Euro Cup. Or for dating a Spice Girl. |
