I am going on the factthatthe majority of fretted players will be using rounds of one sort or another and that fretless players would be using flats for the most part.

From what I have actually heard with rounds on a fretless, you are esentially getting a fretted type tone, which for me pretty much negates having a fretless.

I assume one purchases a fretless to get more of that fretless sound, not a fretted sound on a bass without frets.

Don't get me wrong, a fretless with rounds does sound good, but if I want that sound I would play my fretted bass. I bought my fretless becasue I wanted a completely different sound and by stringing it up with flats, that is what I have gotten, plus no matter how small the little ridges on the fretboard are from the rounds, they still bug me. I like the wood to be unmarked and able to show of its detail.
Rounds on a fretless sounds very different to rounds on a fretted. How do you define a fretted type tone anyway? Just the fact it has a brighter, more harmonically rich sound? The vast majority of fretless players seem to use rounds, Jaco, Bunny Brunel, Marcus Miller, Gary Willis, Michael Manring... I can't even think of a player on fretless that doesn't use them. The who's who of fretless players seem to stick to rounds.

The standard fretless tone is characterised by roundwounds, so how can you say it goes against a fretless sound?

Also by your logic, would using flats on a fretted make it sound like a fretless?
The reason for that is the cost of strings.

An "okay" set of rounds are a hell of a lot cheaper than an "okay" set of flats.

So it makes financial sense to ship them with rounds so that a basic set of strings is there to have tension on the neck.

Look at it this way, if you could save US$10 per bass you ship by putting on rounds instead of flats, and you ship 1000 basses, thats US$10 000 right there.

And of course the likes of Cort are shipping several thousand basses every day.
apparantly they are shipping over 600,000 guitars a year.

not just Cort though, they build for Ibanez, Squier, Schecter and others.
the reason they can make things so cheap and have good quality is because they were one of the first guitar companies to see the potential in building out of Korea, South Korea and Indonesia.

apparantly botique companies employ them to make their budget line instruments to.

My mom let me stay home today. It was nice of her, but I wish she didn't because I'm gonna be really bored. I should've bought the RC 20 yesterday. Then I wouldn't have minded staying home.

I'm looking at the progress of my TRB.
It was shipped on the 20th.
And it's saying it wont be here till the 2nd!!
Does it really take 2 weeks to ship a bass from Quebec to British Colombia?

It seems a tad long.

Doesn't know how to use torrents properly.

Spaceman Spiff 10-23-2006 04:44 PM
