Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Supertramp (who i'm currently listening to), Neil Young, Rush, Tragically Hip, the Who, Jimi Hendrix..

It's hard to single many out as there are so many great classic rock artists, but these are the ones that immediately stand out as my favourites.

sweet you have my approval. my top 5 would be

1. the beatles
2. the doors
3. the who
4. led zeppelin
5. pink floyd

immediate runners up include:
Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, The Band, The Beach Boys, CCR, Queen, and CSNY

but what about lesser known groups?

I myself am a huge fan of The Traveling Wilburys, Emerson Lake & Palmer, King Krimson, Yes, and the Moody Blues to name a few.

Leper 03-16-2005 01:39 AM

stellar line-up, Queen and the Doors would also definitely fit into my immediate favourites list.

B0nz0 03-16-2005 01:43 AM

omg i left out the allman brothers. amazing considering they were my favorite rock concert ever.

hmm lesser known groups..i agree with Yes ( ) some others are Chilliwack, Big Sugar, Simon and Garfunkel, April Wine...not sure how well-known chilliwack, big sugar, and april wine are outside of canada..oh, Harlequin also.

obviously not that well known, cuz i don't know any of them... but simon and garfunkel aren't exactly obscure...

my favorite canadian band ever is easily the band, with neil young in second place (he is canadian right? are all of csny canadian, cuz then that would be my # 2) and then comes rush (being a drummer, i have no choice but to love rush)

Ya they're not really obscure at all, but no one really talks about them so i wasn't sure how well known they were on mx.

He sure is, in fact he's from my hometown, Winnipeg. I think he's the only Canadian member of CSNY but im not 100% sure. It's funny that you mention the band as your favourite Canadian band, as they're probably not even in the top 5 most popular canadian bands..in canada.

B0nz0 03-16-2005 01:59 AM

but the band's music is sooooo good and timeless. it ages ridiculously well. what are your thoughts on the band?

Leper 03-16-2005 02:02 AM

Ahh im actually not that familiar with them. I know i've heard songs by them in the past but i couldn't name one off the top of my head.

B0nz0 03-16-2005 02:06 AM

I would suggest you check them out... start with the live album The Last Waltz or the studio album Music From Big Pink... they were after all favorites of people like Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton.
Specific Songs to check out:
The Weight
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down
I Shall Be Released
King Harvest
Up On Cripple Creek

those are some of the best known. if u like more i'd be happy to give you a few.

Leper 03-16-2005 02:07 AM

oh yeah, the headstones are another one of my somewhat obscure favourites.

Aha i knew once you mentioned some song names it would ring a bell, i've definitely heard Up on Cripple Creek. Pretty good song, very unique sound to it.

Leper 03-16-2005 02:20 AM

well as enlightening as this conversation has been, im afraid i must turn in to get some sleep.

B0nz0 03-16-2005 02:21 AM

i actually don't know much by your obscure favorites (but then again that's why they're obscure... i'm sure i can come up with some you've never heard of too lol, i really just asked that to see if you knew your classic rock or were just a casual fan and you clearly know your classic rock)

but anyways some obscure artists to check out, with a song they did next to them (by no means the only song, just one of the better ones)(i starred the particularly good artists):
*Dr. John - Such a Night
Arlo Guthrie - City of New Orleans
Quick Silver Messenger Service - What about me
The Flying Burrito Brothers - Lazy Day
Sha Na Na - Rock and Roll is Here to Stay
*Paul Butterfield - Mystery Train
Canned Heat - Going up the Country
Country Joe and the Fish - The Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die In a Rag
*The Byrds - 8 Miles Heigh
The Chambers Brothers - Time Has Come Today
*Procol Harem - Whiter Shade of Pale
*JJ Cale - Cocain
*Lovin' Spoonful - What a Day for a Daydream
*Harry Chapin - Cat's in the Cradle
Blind Faith - Presence of the Lord

and that's it for me tonight

Ulysses 03-16-2005 03:27 AM

Blind Faith, Procol Harum, The Byrds, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Lovin' Spoonful are some personal favourites out of that list but I am finding it hard to access Country Joe and the Fish material. Blind Faith is a great album and Homburg and Other Hats from Procol Harum as some great tracks on it as does Mr. Tamborine Man from the Byrds.

Those artists performed those on Festival Express.

your welcome my fine friend. thank you for posting in it!

thickasabrick 03-16-2005 01:32 PM

I suppose I started posting after you left. So you probably don't know me. I come in here quite often now.

Is Procol Harem the band that did that song Conquistador? Or am I thinking of someone else? That's a pretty cool song.
yea they did, but they're best known for whiter shade of pale
Well I'd better hear that song then. You'd be surprised at how often Conquistador is played on my local Classic Rock radio station. To the point of being overplayed. I've never heard another song by them (I don't think).

So is Sha Na Na a good rock band? (I'm looking at your list) I know they did a bunch of songs on the movie Grease..I have the soundtrack. They weren't really like "rock" songs though...more just suited for the movie.

edit- I'm listen to Whiter Shade of Pale right now...I've definitely heard it before. I don't recall the words, but the melody is very familiar.

sha na na is very weird. they were originally a columbia acapella group, but one guys bro was a producer and turned them into a rock act. so they were basically a bunch of former acapella singers now with backing instruments performing mostly 50's songs in the 60's. they did play at woodstock and festival express, as well as opening for and then playing with janis joplin and the grateful dead quite often.

That's pretty cool. Any albums you would suggest?

And do you listen to/like Bob Dylan? I'm just wondering.

Jam2Me 03-16-2005 02:20 PM

I got Bob Weir (of the Grateful Dead) - Ace today, so far so good.

Anyone know of any specifically good Dick's Picks...they were in the same box as Bob's cd, there were about 5 (this is in the used section so they were all around $13.) and they all had different song selections.

You may notice no one is around (cept me and bonzo). I don't have any suggestions for you. Does the Bob Weir album have only original songs, Grateful Dead ones? or both?

yea, they are very different from most other bands, especially of that era. i don't even know what bands to compare them too... everyone else at woodstock was all psychadelic and they got up in their ridiculous outfits and crazy choreography... funny crap.

Cassidy, Black-Throated Wind, One More Saturday Night, Mexicali Blues and Playing In The Band are the GD songs on it, and then a few other Weir songs.

Yea I think Sha na na took a few (hundred) tabs of acid too many

HendrixRules321 03-16-2005 02:44 PM
And of course there are more hugely popular Classic Rock bands that should be known forever. Like, The Who (My favorite). They make music like no other. Each member was fabulous, all craftman. Or The Grateful , who defined a generation, and started a long line of San Fransico bands. Or Crosby, Stills Nash, and Young. Who in many ways were the American, more talented Beatles. They had it all. For most Classic rock listens, that band is usually over looked, and The Grateful .

I recomend all Classic Rock listeners to listen to these lesser known Classic Rock bands

Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, The Hollies, Blind Faith, Big Bro and Holding Company, The Mother of Invention, The Lovin' Spoonful, ect. There is just to much to name.
Canned Heat, jefferson airplane, woodstock era santana?? and are we all forgeting Jimi or is he not classic rock somehow?

No, they were actually Bob Weir/John Perry Barrlow (+ 2 with Mickey Hart) songs, just like songs off of Garcia are Jerry Garcia songs. But of course, they offer their songs to the band.
