just crushed a critical response
D) Priscilla, while loud, brash and entertaining from beginning to end as can be, does suffer from Desson Howe’s claim of being a ‘one-note pleasure’. Much of the movie depends on the sheer outrageousness of the characters presented, and moreover, their interaction with their environment, whether it’s outback, bush town or city. The over-the-top nature of the three main characters is generally enough to drown out much of the noise surrounding them. This persists for almost the entirety of the movie, with ridiculous costumes and irrelevant behavior effectively covering up everything else. A large problem in this arises upon the realization that none of the characters are particularly well established. Bernadette has lost her lover and is world weary, Mitzi has an ex-wife and a son and Felicia is generally loud and belligerent. Attempts are made to flesh out the characters through comedic flashbacks, but they ultimately add nothing to the characters. So while the three protagonists are likeable, it’s due more to their flamboyance and charm than multi-dimensional character traits. As Howe alludes, the movie works because the one note it hits, it hits well. The characters are funny, vivacious and unique, and that could very well be enough for a road trip comedy. If the intent of the movie is to delve into an analysis or commentary about drag queen lifestyles and their treatment within larger societies, than surely it has not succeeded. The larger conflicts added to the film, presumably to add weight to both the characters and the film as a whole, including Mitzi’s family, intended child molestation of Felicia and the grief and world weariness of Bernadette, do little more than distract from the highlights of the film which are contained when the explosive nature of the women can be explored through their shows and rehearsals. In particular, the confrontation between father and son with Mitzi seems a complete tonal mismatch and hokey sitcom moment, taking away from the communal joy presented in other scenes to instead present a message out of an After School Special. The success of Priscilla will likely have much to do with the context in which it is viewed. As a camp, fun road comedy about outrageous characters, than surely it is all that could have been asked to be, but if the perfunctory and superfluous scenes containing commentary on drag lifestyle and acceptance are meant to be taken to heart as much as the humor, than it may have missed the mark. |
