I've been really thinking about graduating high school early next year, and going to college to pursue either/a combination of Literature, Fine Arts, Electronics, or Philosophy. Im really leaning towards the Literature, though, with a Fine Arts minor, although it is kindof a worthless major job-wise.
To a large extent it doesn't really matter what degree you have, just that you have a degree. A large proportion of graduates don't start a job in the same area as that of their degree. Companys just want to know that you can hack the workload. Choose a degree that you'll enjoy, although as Tangy said not something that you view as a major hobby. It takes all the fun out of it. |
I really want to go to Chicago. Brown seems appealing, too, but I don't know if I have the grades. My sisters got waitlisted at the latter and I'm pretty sure her grades were a lot better than mine. JonM, what was your GPA, etc. in highschool?

My GPA was 3.87, and my test scores were actually below average for Brown. It's not all about academic performance here. If you're a good writer, a thoughtful, passionate person, and the kind of person who wasn't at all satisfied by a high school education, and that obviously contributed to not performing as well in high school as you were capable of, that comes through in your application, and they like that. |
I got out of my first class this morning at 10... my next class isn't until 2.
4 hour break + no car + no friends to be found = most boring day ever. EDIT: Oh noes! I still have 2 and half hours to waste and my laptop battery is about to run out! What's my nerd ass supposed to do now? Talk to REAL people? That's no good... |
Eff Chicago.

Both. And Eff Stfu Stevens x 567,398 Eff's |
That's true, but not for engineering. That's a university program. My best friend is at Mac for engineering and my dad went to Ryerson.
Engineering is a University course, however, many employers won't higher an engineer without two to five years work experience so what is happening is universities are offering programs where you attend uni. for the theory and then after graduating you go to college to get the hands on learning, similar to work experience. This is according to my physics teacher, anyways. |
That is probably true. But the problem with me is that I do well in most subjects and I tend to find a lot of things interesting, which makes it nearly impossible to narrow down career options.
This is what we have liberal arts programs for.

I've been told that I'm a naturally strong writer, and I enjoy it. My GPA this semester is around a 3.9 I think. It might be a 4.0 if I got an A is health. I think my grades would be better if I wasn't so apathetic. |
I don't like my job. I don't make many mistakes anymore, but it's just so boring.

I hate my job. I got bullied my manager for a while when I started, then I stood up to him and he's backed off a little. But I always feel under pressure, so I make mistakes, my managers know nothing about morale. |
I plan on getting a job next semester, when my classes aren't as difficult.

Does your school go above 4.0? Mine didn't, so that's probably why a 3.87 can still be considered Brown material in my case. |
Oh. Yeah. It does. 4.0 is still straight A's, but with weighted courses and such people can get higher.
|
Oh. Yeah. It does. 4.0 is still straight A's, but with weighted courses and such people can get higher.
Right. See, I took all honors/AP classes junior and senior year, and I had a 3.87 not taking that into account. Still, though, that's nothing compared to what some people here did, but they major in something boring, usually. |
Kinda off the topic, why the hell would anyone want to study music and break it down so much that it becomes work not interest? music is fun, it's not about education and forced learning man.
Why the hell wouldn't you want to, when you have a deep passion for something, get all you can out of it. Learning about something you love is the most rewarding thing in the world.
Plus it's waste. The only thing you can do with a music degree is become a teacher.
Learning anything, even if it doesn't immediately get you a lucrative career, is never a waste. One thing you can "do" with a music degree is own a deeper understanding of music, thus enabling you to express yourself on levels you hadn't previously thought possible using music. Of course it's not for everyone, but people who really love music and want to get every little bit they can out of it are hungry for knowledge. Something you can get in college, if you put in the effort yourself, is knowledge. Learning about things you love always involves grunt work—learning anything requires grunt work—but this makes the power you gain in your field all the more rewarding. If you're going to spend your time aching through something, why not make it something that helps you fulfill your passion? |
My unweighted GPA is bad.
3.3 :( |

My manager knows nothing about morale or motivation either, and the worst thing is, he tries to blame our poor sales on the team when he is in no way helping or motivating us. Even after only about a month into the job, it's hard to get up at 6am every weekday, travel over an hour to get to work on crowded public transport just to hear our manager say our sales are shit. |
I went to the doctor today and found out I have a mild head concussion. To make matters better, or worse depends how you see it, there's a mouse in our house.
|
Mice are adorable.
|
last year there was a mouse in our house too. We had our natural Christmas tree up so he must have gotten in that way.
he hid under the TV cabinet thing until he ventured out and the cat saw him :( the cat beat him up but then my mom caught him and let him go outside :) |
