Triad is a bad bad boring song.

ShadowMan 04-27-2006 04:59 PM
anyone else learning Vicarious on the guitar?
Yup. Finally getting that triplet down.

randomthought9 04-27-2006 05:09 PM

I can't play Tool songs, they use all these weird time signatures that I don't know how to count, I'll just stick to 4/4.

Where's the tab for Vicarious?

Moses 04-27-2006 05:43 PM
hmm.. It doesn't quite seem like it but I'm not gonna argue.
All they are doing is playing in 10/8 and accenting different notes. Trust me I know my rhythm, they weren't doing anything hard or interesting. Of course I'm probably just spoiled by listening to Chick Corea all the time, now that's some interesting stuff.

Their melodies are pretty much the same as they've always been and that "Meshuggah" part was the simplest part of the song. I don't see what's impressive at all.

I agree. I still listen to it when I'm playing the full album, but it really could have been so much better.

How do you know its in 10/8? It could very easily be in 10/4 with a fast tempo.

Moses 04-27-2006 05:55 PM
How do you know its in 10/8? It could very easily be in 10/4 with a fast tempo.
Because a conductor wouldn't conduct it that way, that's how you determine it. It's also not in 5/4 because of the accents.

You don't conduct differently because of what type note gets the beat. Do you know the difference between simple and compound time?

Futuro 04-27-2006 06:47 PM

Ill stick to counting it in 4/4.

I don't, please explain.

Deconstruction 04-27-2006 06:51 PM

Bah, Tool loves time sig changes..IT kinda bugs me.
In a good way though.

Futuro 04-27-2006 06:56 PM
You don't conduct differently because of what type note gets the beat.
Correct. As in a compound duple and simple triple are the same.

gmoneyguy 04-27-2006 07:03 PM
Correct. As in a compound duple and simple triple are the same.
not really, in duple compound there are only two beats but they are divided into three parts while simple tripl has three beats divide into two. for example 6/8 is duple compund the dotted quarter gets the beat. When you see three eighth notew in row in the beginning of a measure it you count it one-la-le. In 3/8 the eighth note gets the beat. and is counted one-te two-te three-te when you see a measure. The thing about any time signature in 3 is it can be read in compund or simple but the is up to the composer.

Edit: I'm going out for dinner, so I may not reply for a while.

Futuro 04-27-2006 07:07 PM

Oh....Whatever... heh...

Well I always thought 5/4 and 10/8 were the same.
Same with 12/8 and 6/4.

*sigh* Theory, I can play in any time signature, I just don't care enough to learn about it.

They way you tell the difference between simple and compound is if you can divide the top number by 3 its compund, and the number you get after dividing the top number is how many beats are in the measure. in 12/8 there are 4 beats and 6/4 there are 2 beats.

Time for dinner later guys.

Dried Muffin Remnants 04-27-2006 07:13 PM

Cobham is the most impressive drummer I've ever heard, I just love Tim Alexander's creativity and listenability. So groovy.

Killtacular 04-27-2006 07:15 PM

Haha, wrong thread.

Dried Muffin Remnants 04-27-2006 07:16 PM

Ahahaha. Mind if I keep this here for amusement? Hahahahahahaah!

Killtacular 04-27-2006 07:24 PM

Please do. It'll amuse the gods.

Sorry if I sound demanding...

I noticed a couple pages back people were learning Vicarious on guitar. I was wonder if someone could link me or send me the tab.

Moses 04-27-2006 08:39 PM
You don't conduct differently because of what type note gets the beat. Do you know the difference between simple and compound time?
Okay you were right on that one (got mixed up between the bottom and top numbers). It's still not the natural way of notating somthing because of the actual tempo of the peice. It doesn't really matter what time signature they were in anyway. Nothing they were doing was impressive or interesting. Either way the way I got 10/8 was because if you count it ignoring the accents it's in 5/4. I doubled it because the accents were in the right spots for 10/8. That's just how I figured it was 10/8.

As for simple and compound time signatures, the way you can tell if it's simple:

The beat is an non-dotted note and each beat is subdivided into two components. The top number is also not divisible by 3 or is three itself. Simple time signatures show how many beats are in the measure.

The way you can tell if it's compound:

The beat is a dotted note and each beat is subdivided into three components. The top number is evenly divisible by 3 except of course signatures with a 3 on top. Compound time signatures show the number of breakdown notes in every bar.

So Alex Grey is selling copies of 10,000 Days signed by him on his site for 20 bucks. I'm definitely picking that up.

Thank you sir.

I never go on MX tabs anymore btw. I use Metaltabs, UG & Mysongbook.

EDIT: I might try that once I'm done and have mastered Lord Abortion in the near future.
Crawl away.

And Ken are you still with crutch? I'd like to hear some stuff when you get some OK recordings... :)
Nah, Im not with Crutch. Crutch broke up a LONG time ago. Ive been with a band that I have played with in the past, before Crutch, and before SF. In a round about way we all ended back together and it is perfect. Were going to hit the studio this summer and were going to record a live show on the 13th of May in Ripley WV at some (in theory) kick *** theatre. Were having it professionaly recorded and are in talks with a company to professionaly video it for us to release with our CD.

Now, on the topic of Tool. GOD DAMN, **** THE BED. Weakest Tool lyrics to date.

I'm Charming 04-27-2006 09:51 PM

The Pot is becoming a favorite Tool song for me.
:smoke:

EDIT: Man..... I guess I just needed to hear Anemia and get a Tool jump start. Now I'm really back into em.

Man the way you use to talk about Crutch was like... you'd found your band for life. What happened, if you don't mind me asking?

infinate_ammo 04-27-2006 09:57 PM

Any other aussies crapping there pants in excitement about tonights release?

Anyway I had an idea before, there are 4 places in the whole country that are doing the 12 pm thing, clearly they are going to have a band member at every location. Fingers crossed that Adam is in Brisbane.

Darkness 04-27-2006 10:03 PM

Um.. I doubt that.

SonorKen 04-27-2006 10:05 PM
Man the way you use to talk about Crutch was like... you'd found your band for life. What happened, if you don't mind me asking?
It wasnt a good fit. As much as I tried to force it, nothing happened. The guitar player basically sucked, the singer was GREAT, and the bass player was good. It was a whole mesh thing.

I should have stuck with the guys Im with again now. We have a history and are all really good friends. At the time of Crutch they had different ideas of musically where they wanted to go than me, now were all on the same sheet of music.

Moses 04-27-2006 10:09 PM

Got any recordings that are available to us? I liked Crutch so I'm interested to hear what you have now.

SonorKen 04-27-2006 10:14 PM

Hit me up on chat sometime and I'll send ya some old stuff. It's not a real good representation of the band because we have progressed and changed direction since the recording. The show on the 13th should be a great recording. Im really proud of the band, we have a loyal following that grows with every show and even have people traveling 4+ hours to attend.

I'll post up some info once I get it all from the 13th. If you liked Crutch, your gonna LOVE this.

Moses 04-27-2006 10:18 PM

Do you have an AIM?

Add me, I gotta jet right now, I'll be back in a few hours tho.

Dr. Jake Destructo 04-27-2006 10:51 PM

So on Monday, I was sick in bed puking, coughing, the whole nine yards. I took advantage of my free kick back time to listen to 10,000 Days. After one round through the album, I decided to sleep, so I did that, and I started having what would perhaps be the wierdest dream ever. I basically lived Rosetta Stoned. I was in my bed, and I couldn't move. Then I started hearing individual words like 'chosen' and 'god' and stuff. I was basically freaking out about this, and the voices started getting darker, more of a chant almost, then this dude walked up to my bed and started telling me about how I was the new master of their civilization and stuff, then my dad walked into my room with some soda and woke me up, so end of dream.

The funniest bit is about how I went "the whole nine yards." This includes diahhrea. Yeah, I **** the bed.

Okay................

Dr. Jake Destructo 04-27-2006 10:58 PM

Yeah, when I get sick, I get really sick. In turn, I take lots of medication. I didn't feel like going to a doctor to get prescribed Codiene, (cough supressant) so I just took lots of Robitussin which has DXM in it, which has the potential to really put your mind out on a limb. :p
