its not, metallica wanted to be really nu-metal and downtune their guitars on St.Anger

and im willing to defend this statement fully:

To clarify about the 7 string James used one on st anger as my friends has the tab book and i have seen him playing it in the studio on some kind of monster
he tunes the lowest strings both to the same note (C) just to either reinforce the root note or leave ringing for ambience
