i hate trying to explain genres to 12-14 year olds.

"mcr are so screamo"
"umm what makes them screamo"
"because they are an emo band but sometimes they scream"
"what do you consider an emo band"
"a band that is emotional, like dashboard confessional"
":("

I find it hilarious having 16 year olds inform me that i dont know what emo is.
Sammy or Dave?
Both actually. I only like 1 song from the Cherone era though. I really like the songs that came from the Sammy era though.

Win A Rabbit 01-30-2008 01:46 PM

So, there's a youth council meeting at my work today, and the 2 people running it have never run it before. Should I go in and run it today, so they can get the hang of it?

I wouldn't get paid for it, today's my 1 day off this week, it's cold outside, and I don't really feel like showering.

But it'd be a nice thing to do.

oliv_da_skinmasher 01-30-2008 01:48 PM

No. Don't do anything for free

Win A Rabbit 01-30-2008 01:52 PM

tbh I was supposed to be in charge of it permanently, but whoever made the schedule messed up and put it on my one day a week i have off this month.

i'll probably end up going in. i have some other work there i need to finish by tomorrow, and i'd rather not be stuck in the office all day tomorrow.

Berk 01-30-2008 01:53 PM

do it,.

im ****ing shaking and i have no idea why

i'm sorry WAR but man this just looks so.... petty. it's not just you, but this comment exemplifies pretty well how ridiculous the stupid genre-ing has gotten. If your music isn't interesting enough to get people to buy it, just call it its own new genre! that makes us unique!

i just don't understand this relatively new quantizing of genres and making smaller boxes to squeeze music into, and then arguing about which minuscule box is better than another, even using genres as an insult towards a group. "mcr are so screamo"

plus, the descriptions for certain genres are pretty weak. Is your music emotional? then it's emo! Well i guess just about every music ever written is emo. Does your music progress? then it's prog! wtf does that even mean?

how is DC emotional and slayer not? how is mcr's screaming "screamo" but satic X not? what makes dream theatre progressive, but Beethoven not?

Berk 01-30-2008 01:57 PM

beethoven is so prog

The era in which it came usually dictates what genre people class it as. Wrong and annoyin as it is, it's true.

i think you misunderstand. the "mcr are so screamo" is the kids talking, not me.

that's how i roll at work. kids say some statement, i ask them to explain why they think that is/why they feel that way towards it, they try to put it into words. :) telling a kid "this is right, this is wrong" doesn't work. asking them "why do you think this is right and this is wrong" tends to work better.

everything you said i agree with.

Meh, usually the genres are pretty well defined, although sometimes they get a bit ridiculous. I mean "Progressive technical math metal" Please. "Quasi-avant garde post rock" Up to that point I definitely agree with you. But larger genres- like emo, death metal, alternative rock, whatever are definitely defined and are useful to describe a band, IMO at least.

oliv_da_skinmasher 01-30-2008 02:16 PM

Yes maybe. But its the fact they're over used to describe PEOPLE not the music

Drum Phil 01-30-2008 02:33 PM

"Emotion Hardcore? Thats the stupidest fucking thing i've ever heard" - Ian MacKaye

Win A Rabbit 01-30-2008 02:37 PM

I've heard stupider things tbh.

Drum Phil 01-30-2008 02:39 PM

Yeah but minor threat dont seem like the sort of people to go out and experience all of lifes joys.

Win A Rabbit 01-30-2008 02:40 PM

i think playing in minor threat would be a pretty joyful experience.

Wow, it's about time someone referenced MacKaye...

Edit - although wrong band.

I find it funny that the whole sXe thing was started by minor threat (wether intentionally or not) and minor threat probably hate every br00t4l little hXc sXe kid.
